    1.2 Intended use

FUNKE oil-air cooling units are intended to cool oils, hydraulic fluids and mixtures of water/glycol by means ofambient air.FUNKE oil-air cooling units are unless required otherwiseby order specifications - designed for special conditions ofuse specified by the customer, concerning temperature, pressure, volumetric flow and flow media and are fabricatedin conformity with EU-pressure equipment directive(PED) 97/23.

Written approval must be obtained from FUNKE for designchanges on the equipment as well as for operating methoddeviating from these instructions or the order-related productspecifications, otherwise guarantee and liability claims canbe invalidated.

An operation with heavy temperature jumps of the medium tobe cooled as well as pressure surge can cause mechanicalor material damage and is generally not allowed!

Abb. 1Principal structure of the name-plate

    1/1 Standard series:

1/2 Design according to ATEX directive:

  • Works may be carried out on the oil-air cooling unit only- if the fan drive is disconnected from the power supply, ifthe hydraulic drive is disconnected from the oil pumprespectively.-if the unit is not under pressure, the temperature of themedia to be cooled does not exceed 40C and the systemis drained!

In case of fan drive by hydraulic motor the max. allow.rotational speed of the fan shall not be exceeded!(More information are on the technical data sheet orobtainable from our specialised personnel.)

No operation in case of partial or complete flooding!

Boiling or freezing of the medium to be cooled shall beavoided in any case (danger of cooler core destruction)!

    Explosion protection / ATEX

In addition the following applies for use of oil-air coolingunits in hazardous areas:

    - No operation of oil-air cooling units without explosionprotective equipment!- Oil-air cooling units explosion protected design are onlyapproved for:ATEX group II, category 3, zone 2 or 22 respectively.- Oil-air cooling units with ATEX equipment are allowed torun in hazardous areas onlywithin the temperature range of 20 to +40C.In case of special design the allowable temperature rangeof the motor must be complied with in any case!

In case of doubt please apply to our experts before puttinginto service!

    Attention!

FUNKE oil-air cooling units are pressure equipment andallowed to be connected, operated and maintained only bytechnically qualified operating and servicing personnel!National and international directives for pressureequipment and machinery(Europe: EU Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) 97/23/EC,machinery directive 98/37/EC),for hazardous fluids as well as on operating safety andaccident prevention must be observed.(In Germany: Law on operating safety and pertinentordinances.)

    3.2 Operation, function

The medium to be cooled is depending on volumetric flowrate flowing through the cooler core either in one pass ormultiple passes and is cooled by the ambient air producedby the fan.The regular fan is a suction fan but can also be supplied aspressure fan if required by the order specification. To reach a high heat dissipation , oil- and air fins, fan bladesand motor power are optimally synchronised.

    3.0 Design & functional description

3.1 Design, main components, materials, accessories

For a most efficient application cooling to 5 6 K above theambient air temperature is recommended. To cool down to values below ambient air temperature is notpossible.

    Abb. 2

  • 4.3 Ambient conditions at set-up site

FUNKE oil-air cooling units are allowed to be used only atambient temperatures as follows:

    In non-hazardous areas(standard design): min. 25C - max. +60C

In hazardous areas(OKAN explosion protected acc. to ATEX directives):

    min. 25C - max. +40C

In case of special designs the allowable temperature rangeof the motor must be complied with!

Ambient air:Unhindered inflow and outflow of ambient air must beensured to avoid a reduced heat dissipation (see also 6.1assembly)Furthermore, if the cooler core or the guard screen of the fanis partly or completely covered, this may cause excessivevibration of the fan or even failure of the drive.Closed rooms must be adequately ventilated.

In case of low ambient temperatures and as a resultincreased viscosity of the medium to be cooled the functionof the system must be guaranteed by appropriate measures(e.g. pressure limiting valve, preheating).

Attention. Dust and mist may cause a heavy drop inperformance.

In case of aggressive or very salty air ( e.g. sea air) a specialpaint is required.

Furthermore, in hazardous areas the ignition temperature ofdeveloped gases must be considered!FUNKE oil-air cooling units in explosion protected designare approved only for:ATEX group II, category 3, zone 2 or 22 respectively.

No operation allowed in case of flooding (completely orpartly)!

    Special modifications are available.

    4.1 Allowed media

    - mineral oils, e.g. lubricating oil, cutting oil, converter oil

    - rapidly biodegradable oils, if not attacking aluminium

    - hydraulic fluids, e.g. HFA, HFB, HFC and HFD

    - water/glycol mixture, e.g. water/glycol 65:35

Under no circumstances use water without anticorrosiveagent! (min 2 %)

Contaminated oils must be filtered (grade of filtration 0,05mm) !Further media may be used only after written approval byFUNKE.

    4.2 Operating Data

    5.0 Transportation instruction

Preferably the FUNKE oil-air cooling units are transported lying on the cooler core - on wooden pallets, properlyfastened not to slip. (figure 3)Bigger oil-air cooling units series OKAN II require liftingdevices for transport and assembly. In case of hanging transport please do not use bright steelropes or chains but sheathed suspension ropes! (figure 4)Suspension ropes to be passed through both frame hoops.Lift slowly. The centre of gravity is not exactly below hangerfixtures and the cooling unit is swinging! figure 3 figure 4

    Figure 5

    Figure 6

  • Control devicesIn any case the plant must be equipped with a control devicefor a safe stoppage of the machinery!

Plants which are approved to operate in hazardous areasmust be grounded using the corresponding earthing boss.

Connection of the motor according to data of the motormanufacturer (see technical documentation or terminal box).Observe the direction of rotation of the motor! As standard FUNKE oil-air cooling units are designed forsuction operation.

In case of horizontal installation the used air must be drawnoff upwards. In any case the technical documentation mustbe observed. In case of high heat dissipation which would result in anexcessive heating of the air in closed rooms, outdoorinstallation is advisable (observe type of protection of themotor!)Outdoors the oil-air cooling unit must be protected (e.g. byroofing) against weather damage caused by rain, snow orwindborne sand etc. If outdoor installation is not possible, anair duct should be provided to lead the used air to theoutside. Note:Supplementary equipment like air ducts for instance cancause loss of the heat dissipation or affect function of theplant if not properly fitted!

If the oil-air cooling unit is operating with surfacetemperatures exceeding 60C protection against accidentalcontacts should be placed or the area should be blockednear passage ways!

In case of danger of heavy temperature jumps in the systeminto which the oil-air cooling unit shall be installed (causedfor instance by control valves or shut-off valves or oscillatingpumps), appropriate measures must be taken to protect theair-oil cooling unit!

    - 8 -

    6.2 Start up

    6.3 Operating advice

An operation with heavy temperature jumps as well aspressure surge can cause mechanical or material damageand is generally not allowed!Continuous or intermittent operation of the FUNKE oil-aircooling unit is possible! When operating the oil-air cooling units with direct-currentmotors it must be taken into consideration that service life ismuch shorter compared with three-phase motors.Frequent startings or continuous operation reduce the lifetime. In case of fan drive by means of hydraulic motor, it is notallowed to exceed the max. allowable rotational speed of thefan!(See technical data sheet or apply to our qualifiedpersonnel.)Essential operating data like pressure and temperature aswell as tightness of the system must be checked regularly,(once monthly at least) depending on conditions of use.

Comply with safety instructions acc. to item 2.0!1.Check proper installation of all connections.2.Check filling of the oil-air cooling unit.During, after filling respectively the oil-air cooling unit must becompletely vented. Any air in the system reduces the capacityand may cause steam bubbles for instance.3.Start the motor. Check correct direction of rotation.Check that the fan is free from deposits.

    6.4 Shutting down / dismantling

Dismantling of the oil-air cooling unit and removal of thecooler and motor connections is allowed only by qualifiedpersonnel.Follow safety instructions section 2.0!

Works on the oil-air cooling unit are allowed only if- the fan drive has been disconnected from the electricalsupply, after the hydraulic drive has been disconnected fromthe oil pump respectively.- the unit is not under pressure, the temperature of themedium to be cooled does not exceed 40C and the unithas been drained!

Working steps:- Switch off main power supply- Disconnect the motor- Drain fluid from the system, carefully disconnect the fluidlines, collect the fluid for reprocessing or regular disposal(see data sheet for the fluid)- Unscrew mounting bolts- Apply protective covers on connecting openings- Protect oil-air cooling unit against damage- Possibly choose appropriate transport container

Take notice of the safety instructions section 2.0

    Important!

  • - 9 -

    7.0 Maintenance

In case of normal operation FUNKE oil-air cooling units arenearly maintenance-free.Essential operating data like pressure and temperature aswell as tightness of the system must must be checkedregularly, (once monthly at least) depending on conditions ofuse.

    Follow safety instructions section 2.0!

Works on the oil-air cooling unit are allowed only if- the fan drive has been disconnected from the electricalsupply, after the hydraulic drive has been disconnected from the oil pump respectively.- the unit is not under pressure, the temperature of themedium to be cooled does not exceed 40C and the unit has been drained!

Cleaning of the oil-air cooling unitAirside dirt deposit on the suction side of the coolingelements can be removed by brushing or vacuum. In case of heavy dirt proceed as follows:

    - dismantle oil-air cooling unit as described under 6.4- remove fan and drive- clean cooler core with compressed air and/or steam jet(cold cleaner can be added) against the direction of airflow

Caution!Do not damage or bend the core fins. This would result indrop in performance!Internal cleaning (only partly)of the cooler is depending onkind of dirt.

Deposits as a result of insufficiently filtered oils can beremoved for instance by filling with degreasing agent. Afterreaction time rinse with clean operating liquid.

By no means cleaning liquids may be used, which areattacking aluminium!

8.0 Cause of faults / removal of faults

The cause for a capacity loss can be on the airside and alsoinside the oil-air cooling unit.1. Too low mass flow check or correct:

    - rotational speed of pump- rotational speed of fan- direction of rotation of fan- electric / hydraulic connection- increased pressure drop in the system

    2. Increased pressure drop Check or correct:

    - narrowed flow cross-section due to deposits / foreign matters- narrowed flow cross-section due to mechanical effect

    3. Too low inlet temperature difference Check or correct:

    - increased air inlet temperature4. Deviations between design conditions and conditions ofuse Check or correct respect:

    - temperature- mass flow- physical properties

In case of a motor failure the user instructions of the motormanufacturer must be followed!

    9.0 Environmental protection / disposal

FUNKE oil-air cooling units are building a closed system.Provided are proper connection and correct operating mode. However, in case of incorrect operating mode or incorrectconnections, or caused by mechanical effects, leaks cannotbe excluded. If in case of a leak at set-up site the medium to be cooled isdirectly reaching the environment (soil or water circuit), the user has to place an appropriate collecting devices (forinstance a back leakage sump). Furthermore, pertinentenvironmental protection regulations and possibly specialregulations concerning handling of the medium to be cooledmust be complied with.Disposal of the oil-air cooling units must be made inaccordance with the rules for disposal of oil and hydraulicfluids as well as for electronic components like motors andswitches.
