FOREWORD

This thirteenth edition of the Gold Directory, like its predecessors, is intended to provide a complete

coverage of the gold mining industry in South Africa.

An overview of gold occurrences with a locality map is presented, followed by an account of South

Africa's position in terms of world gold production, current production within the Republic and an

outline of the structure of the gold mining industry. The main body of the Directory consists of an

alphabetical list of the operating companies, and includes details of factors such as production,

mineral reserves and financial results.

Information contained in the Directory was obtained from Mineral Economics Directorate statistics

and company financial reports.

It is hoped that this compilation will provide a useful reference for all industry participants as well as

prospective investors.

A. THE OCCURRENCE AND PRODUCTION OF GOLD IN SOUTH AFRICA

1. INTRODUCTION

Gold’s attractive colour, bright lustre, and high malleability and durability, (to the point of

indestructibility) has endeared it to man throughout history.

In the ancient times, gold was mined extensively in southern Africa, but apparently only to a limited

extent within South Africa. The first recorded discovery of gold in South Africa during the modern era,

occurred on the farm Eersteling, near Polokwane, in the Limpopo Province, during 1871. This was

closely followed by findings in Mpumalanga Province, at Pilgrims Rest (1872), Kaapse Hoop (1874)

and Barberton (1882). The discovery of gold in conglomerates on the farm Langlaagte, on the

Witwatersrand, in 1886, led to the exploitation of the largest gold deposits the World has known to

date. Mining on extensions of these conglomerates, particularly those belonging to the Main Reef

zone, spread rapidly in the Central Rand, West Rand and East Rand gold fields. In time, discoveries

of even more fabulous reefs were made further afield within the Witwatersrand Basin, resulting in the

opening up of the West Wits, Klerksdorp, Free State and Evander gold fields (Fig. 1).

2. OCCURRENCES

By far the most important occurrences of gold in South Africa are found within conglomerates in the

upper division of the Witwatersrand Supergroup and the basal formation of the overlying Ventersdorp

Supergroup. The vast majority of current mining operations are concentrated on gold-bearing rocks of

these Supergroups.

The Witwatersrand rocks were deposited over a time span of some 190 million years, commencing

about 2 900 million years ago. Currently, seven gold fields are being exploited within the

Witwatersrand Basin. They are preserved in structural depressions and downwarps in the

Witwatersrand Basin and consist of fans or fan deltas deposited by fluvial systems that accumulated

erosional debris from an uplifted northwestern edge, before debouching into an inland sea or lake.

Relatively smaller gold deposits occur within greenstones of Archaean age (older than 2 500 million

years), especially in the Barberton Mountain Land and the Murchison Range. Gold is also found in

the Transvaal Supergroup (2 000 to 2 600 million years old), notably in the Black Reef Formation and

the Chuniespoort Group. Occurrences are also known in the Cape (300 to 500 million years old) and

Karoo (200 to 250 million years old) Supergroups.

3. PRODUCTION

In 2008, South Africa's known gold resources represented 29,7 percent of the world total (Table 1).

South Africa's contribution to world mine production in 2008 is illustrated in Figure 2, while the

country's gold production and revenue gained from exports and local sales from 1999 to 2008 is

reflected in Table 2.

Approximately 91,4 percent of the gold produced in South Africa in 2008 was won from mines

exploiting reefs in the Witwatersrand Basin. Retreatment plants, producing gold mainly from residue

dumps in the Central Rand and Klerksdorp areas, contributed about 2 percent to total gold

production. Gold mines outside the Witwatersrand contributed 2,8 percent while 3,8 percent was

produced as a by-product from platinum-group metal mines, uranium mines and several base metal

mines (Fig. 3).

After smelting, which takes place on the larger individual mines, bullion bars containing about 85

percent gold, 9 percent silver and 4 to 5 percent base metals, are taken to the Rand Refinery near

Johannesburg and processed to either 99,5 percent purity or 99,9 percent purity to meet specialised

demands from certain industries. The Rand Refinery then sells the refined gold to its customers on

behalf of the gold-producing companies. Rand Refinery has as its customer base the major

accredited international bullion banks and acts as the sales agent for the gold producers.

G. CONCLUSION

This edition of the directory on the operating gold mines and recovery plants in the Republic of

South Africa (2010) provides practical information on the production units within the companies,

mineral reserves, contact details and financial results of companies. Information on the mines,

were obtained by analyzing the annual reports. Parts of the information were obtained through

enquiries, such as faxes and electronic mail and were conveyed to me by the project-leaders

geologists and mine managers.

Footnote: Some smaller producers of gold are not included in this directory.
