Adding A Spatial Scale in EnSight

Load a Data set

For example – $CEI_HOME/ensight82/data/ami/ami.case

Turn on just the hypersonic body– i.e. turn off the flowfield

Then turn on the bounding box

Slide 3

Modify the bounds box in “ViewPort Mode”

Click to get into viewport mode

Click here to bring up Bounds Attributes

Turn offAuto Size

Note: by default the bounds box comes up ‘shrink-wrapped’ to the data. We seek to

enlarge the bounds box so that the coordinatelimits are nice, round numbers.

Modify each axis of the bounds box

Foreach axis as shown, make changes to– Axis Min,Max

– “Grad Type”

– “# of”

The result should look similar to thisExplore other controls above

Alternatively, use a “3d arrow”

“annotation mode”

“3d arrows”

And get this dialog

Create a 3d arrow

Click “New”……and get an arrow in the default location

Slide 8

Change the arrow location and orientation

Location

Orientation

Click location tab

With the newly created arrow selected

Slide 9

Change the arrow size and color

Click Size tab

Make changes as desired

Choose a color

Note that the changesmade here intentionally reduce the “arrow tip” to zero since we are just using it for a scale bar (it’s a “trick”)

Slide 10

Change the arrow label

Tab

Textnote: enter text (e.g. “10 micron”),

position cursor at beginning of string and change font

as desired (font change is optional)

The arrow shows length, so the bounds labels become unnecessary (but handy to have available for sanity check)

For each axis…

…set “Grid Location” To “None”

Slide 12

Flip the arrow so that the text doesn’t collide

With the arrow selected…

Click the “Flip” button
