PRINCIPAL’S COLUMN- ANZAC DAY At Port Fairy Consolidated School we are strongly committed to maintaining the remembrance of ANZAC Day and all that it represents. Anzac Day is of great significance to many people around the world. It is particularly important in the Australian calendar. Not only is it a time to remember those who landed on the beaches at Gallipoli at dawn on April 25, 1915 but it is a time to remember and reflect on all those affected by war and conflict over the years. For me personally it is an opportunity to reflect on the life of my grandfather who was in the Australian Navy during the Second World War. This week we were privileged to host a visit from our local R.S.L. members; Wally Robertson, Jim Lane, Doug Nolte, Milton Langdon and Michael Wentworth, who joined our school assembly on Monday. On Saturday some of our students will read their poems and reports at the ANZAC Day service at the Reardon Theatre in Port Fairy at 10:15am. All of our students are encouraged to attend at least one of the following services: 6:00am (Old Memorial crn Bank and Princes Hwy), 6:30am (New Memorial at the Railway Green), 10:15am (Reardon Theatre) 10:55am (March down Bank Street to the New Memorial), 11:00am (New Memorial at the Railway Green). All students must be accompanied by an adult and we request that they wear school uniform. ANZAC COMMEMORATIVE DAY Tomorrow we will be hosting our ‘ANZAC Commemorative Day’ (Please see the program in today’s newsletter).
Much is happening! A special highlight will be the opening of our ‘Keeping Place’. This newly renovated area,
which is home to our ‘World War 1 Honour Board’, has been re-designed as a ‘Keeping Place’ to hold the
school’s significant historical items. Tours will be conducted from 9:00am. Thank you to the families who have
donated items for the ANZAC display and to Jenny McCarthy and Maree Stewart for their work with this project.
Please note due to the school being open to all families on Friday we will not be holding our scheduled
Celebration Assembly.
MEALS ON WHEELS Thank you to our Year 5 students who delivered meals to the needy members of our local community this week. Thank you to our parent volunteer drivers and helpers; Leone Edwards, Vicki Mounsey, Virginia Peterson, Julia Adams, Jodie Hill, Kristy Pruin, Jane Condon, Melissa Byron, Kristie Else, Agostina Hawkins, Margaret Bennett, Christine Neal, Kylie Gavin, Jaqui King, Nadine Lee, Paul Huismann, Danielle Cossens, Cathy Van Engelen & Sally Anderson and also to Bev Holcombe for her excellent coordination. STUDENT SAFETY BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL
As we take our duty of care very seriously we would like all children to leave the school playground by 3:45pm,
unless they are being supervised by a parent. By the time our duty teachers return to their classrooms
unsupervised children need to be on their way home or waiting at the general office for their parents to arrive.
We also remind everyone that children should not arrive at school before 8:45am. We understand that there
are times when children need to be dropped off earlier but I would appreciate it if you contacted me about this
so that supervision arrangements can be put in place. Any children arriving at school after 9:00am must be
signed in at the office by a parent or carer. Signing out also applies if you collect your child before 3:30pm. Thank
you for your support with this.
SMOKING BAN Just to remind everyone once again. The following information is from the Victorian Government regarding smoking bans: From 13 April 2015, smoking has been banned within the grounds of, and at and within four metres of an entrance to, all Victorian childcare centres, kindergartens (or preschools) and primary and secondary schools. Also at and within four metres of an entrance to children’s indoor play centres and Victoria public premises. Victoria public premises are all public hospitals and registered community health centres and certain Victorian Government buildings. Thanks to our school community for their ongoing support with the management of this important health issue. HOMEROOM REPS Please note our next meeting will be on Wednesday, May 6 at 9:10am in the meeting room at PFCS. For those who cannot make the morning meeting I will share any information at a 7pm meeting at Ramellas, on the same date. Our next key event is the ‘Walk Safely to School, Healthy Breakfast’ morning. Details to follow in future newsletters.

Hampden League Junior Football Due to the Anzac Day services, times for the Port Fairy Seagulls Junior matches
being played on Saturday have been altered as follows:
Under 12’s at 12.45pm. Under 14’s at 2pm. Under 16’s at 3.30pm.
Meals on Wheels A very big thank you to those parents who
have contributed to this program this week.
Also to the students who have assisted –
without your help we could not have
completed the program.
Smoking Law Changes As of April 13, 2015, under the Tobacco Act 1987 smoking is prohibited within the
grounds of, and within four metres of an entrance to, all Victorian child care centres,
kindergartens, preschools and schools. This ban ensures that children and young
people can enter and leave these areas without being exposed to harmful second-
hand smoke. Second-hand tobacco smoke is particularly dangerous to children and
young people because they have smaller airways and less developed immune
systems compared to adults.
PUPIL FREE DAY I would like to inform our school community that Friday, June 26, will be a pupil free day. On this day the teachers will be available for ‘Parent Teacher Interviews’. FAMILY NUMERACY PROBLEM
Don’t forget to ‘have a go’ at our weekly ‘Numeracy Problem’ in today’s newsletter. Thanks to Mr Twycross
for organising this.
BUS TRAVELLER AWARD
This year we are recognising our best bus travellers with a weekly award. This award will be nominated by Mr
Matt Hoey and it will be given to those students who contribute to the safety, comfort and well-being of their
fellow passengers. Congratulations to Ava Fitzgerald who received this award at last Monday’s assembly. Well
done Ava!
HEALTHY LUNCH AWARD
Each week we recognise a student with good food for lunch that is packed in a way that reduces our rubbish.
Each of these students receives a free lunch from our school café as a prize. The winner for this week, as
announced at Monday’s assembly was Maddie Lee. Congratulations Maddie!
PLEASE REMEMBER
‘We aim for every child to be the best that they can be – without exception!’
‘MY DOOR IS ALWAYS OPEN’

Show & Tell .... with Jenelle Baulch The best advice I ever received was…. If you can’t say anything nice, say nothing at
all.
The most important things I take into the classroom every day are … sense of humour,
respect, and enjoying the company of the children in my grade.
The most important lesson I've been taught by students is….. that our differences are to
be celebrated.
The most memorable moments in my teaching career is … seeing the amazement of
success from my Reading Recovery students.
If I had a magic wand I would….. make the snowfields closer and cheaper!
Somer’s Camp

Hi all, This week accompanying the school newsletter, families of children in Grades 3-6 will take home an Enrolment
Form for an after school Drama Club to be held on Friday evenings at the St. Patrick’s Parish Primary School Hall. The brochure indicates a 3.30pm - 4.30pm time frame, however, it will in fact begin at 3.45pm and conclude at
4.45pm. (Beginning week three, term two.) This will enable PFCS children wishing to attend, time enough to finish their day at school and then proceed to St. Patrick’s Hall.
The Drama Club, as the brochure suggests, simply provides a potential stepping stone into the world of drama. Fun activities and games are designed to encourage and hopefully create an enthusiasm for dramatic performance.
In first term, The Drama Club was offered to PFCS children in Grades Prep, 1 and 2 on Tuesday’s after school. Due to a full enrolment however I was unable to offer further classes. This is no longer the case as an extra class on a Friday afternoon can now be offered. Please take the time to read the brochure and feel free to contact me either by phone or email if you have any questions or queries, as I would be more than happy to discuss these with you. … Regards, Tommy Greene
