Vriens, Managing Partner, Vriens & Partners Hans W. Vriens is Managing Partner of Vriens & Partners Pte Ltd. Hans has lived and worked in Asia since 1990, during which time he has been counsel to clients on many of the region’s most sensitive issues. A regular political commentator, he is often asked to provide background briefings to visiting executives to help them better understand political, economic, cultural and business developments in the region. He is able to provide unique and frank analysis thanks to the many research and consultancy projects Vriens & Partners (V&P) has undertaken for MNCs and governments around Asia. Prior to establishing V&P, Hans was Vice Chairman, Asia at APCO Worldwide overseeing the expan- sion of the firm in Southeast Asia. Before this he established and served as Managing Director of the Indonesia practice for six years, and prior to this was a political economist at the Political and Econom- ic Risk Consultancy in Hong Kong. He earlier practiced law at Clifford Chance and was the Asia correspondent for a leading Dutch financial and economic daily. In 1995, he was elected president of the Foreign Correspondents’ Club Hong Kong, then the largest in the world. Hans served on the Board of the Europe-ASEAN Business Alliance and was Chairman of the Foundation Dutch Education at the United World College of South- east Asia (UWCSEA). He served on the board of the European Chamber of Commerce in Singapore, and was founding chairman of the Dutch Chamber of Commerce in Singapore. Hans graduated from law school in civil and constitutional law at Groningen University in the Nether- lands. During his studies, he was a research assistant in parliamentary history and constitutional law. In 1982 he took a year off from his studies when he was elected president of the Student Union (VAP). Hans studied economics and history at the Bologna Center of Paul Nitze School of Advanced Interna- tional Studies (SAIS) of the Johns Hopkins University. He also did stints at the Universities of Grenoble in France, and Krakow in Poland. His family lived in the Dutch East Indies for several generations until the handover of Papua to the United Nations in 1962. Hans is married to Katy le Blanc and has two sons. Kenneth Daniel Tan, President Asia Pacific, Varian Kenneth Tan is currently President for Asia Pacific at Varian Medical Systems. Varian is global leader in solutions for advancing cancer treatment; specializing in radiotherapy, radiosurgery, proton therapy, brachytherapy and oncology informatics software. He has 20 years of experience in healthcare; having held Commercial leadership roles in Varian, Medtronic, Covidien, Boston Scientific and Novartis. More than 14 years are in the implantable, disposable medical devices and capital equipment; covering var- ious Global markets and regions in Asia Pacific. He has progressed through Sales, Marketing, Strategy and P&L roles. In recent years, he has built his success around driving difficult strategic shifts through organizations; in areas of business strategy and organizational transformation. The hallmarks of his tenure are growth acceleration, business-model innovation and a strong leadership team. Renzo Taal, Senior Vice President APAC, Salesforce Renzo joined Salesforce in February 2014 to lead growth and success in the Northern European territory. As Senior Vice President Northern Europe of Salesforce, his focus is to enable companies in Northern Europe to innovatively connect digitally with their customers. In 2018, Renzo joined the Salesforce Asia Pacific team and is excited to be working with brands all across Asia to help them drive success and get closer to their customers. Renzo has 20 years experience in successful business leadership, both in the Netherlands and internationally. Prior to his leadership role within Salesforce, Renzo was Senior Vice President at Philips Lighting. He was responsible for the transformation of the Lighting division, for driving online business and its return to profitability. Before joining Philips, Renzo was involved within Dell for Global M&A and Sales Operations for the World Wide Public and Large Enterprise division, based out of Austin, Texas. In this role he was a member of the global Dell executive team and was part of many of Dell’s strategic takeovers. Earlier in his career at Dell, Renzo managed the Dell site in Amsterdam and the Dell Services and Marketing business for China, Hong Kong and North Asia. Renzo holds a Master of Science in Business Administration from the Erasmus University, Rotterdam School of Management. He studied at Harvard Business School and worked as a strategy consultant for the finance and fast moving consumer goods industry prior to joining Dell.

Moderator: Dr. Malcolm Cook, Senior Fellow, ISEAS-Yusof Ishak InstituteDr Malcolm Cook is a Senior Fellow at ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore. From 2003 to 2010, he was the inaugural East Asia Program Director at the Lowy Institute for International Policy in Sydney and then the inaugural Dean of the School of International Studies at Flinders University in Adelaide. Before that, he was a lecturer at Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines. Malcolm has worked in Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Australia and Singapore. He was awarded a joint honours Bachelor of Arts degree by McGill University in Montreal, a Masters degree in International Relations by the Interna-tional University of Japan in Niigata-ken and a PhD in International Relations by the Australian National University in Canberra.

Ambassador Michael Michalak, SVP, Regional Managing Director, US-ASEAN Business CouncilAmb. Michael W. Michalak joined the US-ASEAN Business Council in September 2015 as Senior Vice President and Regional Managing Director. He oversees the Council’s six offices in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) from the Council’s regional headquarters in Singapore, and leads the Council’s regional advocacy efforts and engages regularly with key ASEAN policymakers and thought leaders to offer his unique perspective on the key role U.S. businesses can play in ASEAN. He served as U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam from August 2007 to February 2011. Prior to his position in Vietnam, Amb. Michalak was Ambassador and Senior U.S. Official to APEC. He also served as Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan and a Master of Science degree in Applied Physics from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He received a second Master’s degree in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He speaks Japanese and Chinese.

Dr Deborah Elms, Executive Director, Asian Trade CenterDeborah Elms is Founder and Executive Director of the Asian Trade Centre. The Asian Trade Centre works with governments and companies to design better trade policies for the region.Dr. Elms sits on the International Technical Advisory Committee of the Global Trade Professionals Alliance and is Chair of the Working Group on Trade Policy and Law. She is also a senior fellow in the Singapore Ministry of Trade and Industry’s Trade Academy. Previously, Dr Elms was head of the Temasek Foundation Centre for Trade & Negotiations (TFCTN) and Senior Fellow of International Political Economy at the S. Rajaratnam School of Interna-tional Studies at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Dr. Elms received a PhD in political science from the University of Washington, a MA in international relations from the University of Southern California, and bachelor’s degrees from Boston University. Dr Elms publishes the Talking Trade Blog.

Natalie Black, Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner, Asia Pacific, UK GovernmentPrior to her current role, Natalie Black was the Deputy Head of the Number 10 Policy Unit where she championed the UK’s tech sector and developed the new modern industrial strategy. In addition to this role, Natalie held the post of Director of the Internet Harms Unit where she coordinated efforts to tackle the challenges of the internet including terrorist use and online safety.Her first role in the Civil Service was Deputy Director and then Director of the Office of Cyber Security in the Cabinet Office where she oversaw the National Cyber Security Strategy and the National Cyber Security Programme.Before joining the Civil Service, Natalie was the Chief of Staff for Security at the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, London2012, and a management consultant. Natalie is a graduate of the London School of Economics and Harvard Kennedy School, where she was a Fulbright scholar.

Jakob Edberg, President and CEO, GR Group AsiaJakob Edberg has been deeply immersed in Japan’s politics and policy-making for two decades. As President & CEO of GR Group Asia, he works and helps clients solve complex political and regulatory challenges in a large variety of sectors and fields – retail, energy, pharmaceuticals, financial services, project financing, foreign policy, and trade just to mention a few. Before co-founding GR Japan, he was Policy Director at the European Business Council in Japan, where he supervised government outreach and advocacy for over 300 companies in 29 sector committees. He also served as a senior trade officer at the Swedish Embassy in Tokyo. Jakob speaks impeccable Japanese, as well as English and Swedish, and complements degrees in political science and Japanese language with a Masters in International Political Economy from the University of Tsukuba.

Drew Thompson, Visiting Senior Research Fellow, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, the National University of SingaporeFrom 2011 to 2018, Drew was the Director for China, Taiwan and Mongolia in the Office of the Secretary of Defense where he was responsible for supporting the Secretary and managing military-to-military relations. He was previously the Director of China Studies and Starr Senior Fellow at the Center for the National Interest in Washington, D.C. Prior to joining the Center, he was the National Director of the China-MSD HIV/AIDS Partnership in Beijing, a 5 year, $30 million HIV/AIDS program established by Merck & Co. and the Chinese Ministry of Health. He lived in Shanghai from 1993 to 1998 where he was the General Manager of a U.S. freight forwarding and logistics firm, overseeing offices in Beijing, Shanghai, and Nanjing.Mr. Thompson studied Chinese language at Beijing University in 1990, and was a graduate student in 1992 at the Johns Hopkins University-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies in Nanjing, China. He graduated cum laude with a B.A. in Asian Studies from Hobart College in 1992, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. In 2004, Mr. Thompson received an M.A. in Government, with a concentration in Homeland Security, from Johns Hopkins University.

Michael Alexander, Regional Campaigns Manager, World Wildlife FundAs the Regional Campaigns Manager for WWF-Singapore, Michael is responsible for bringing communications, campaign-ing and advocacy work together to deliver conservation outcomes for significant environmental challenges facing the region. His current focus is heavily on tackling the global challenge of plastic pollution, deforestation in Sumatra and the rampant illegal trade in wildlife.Michael has been with WWF for two years, including a stint working in communications planning for WWF International hosted out of the UK office. He has also worked in the advertising industry in London for nearly ten years. WWF-Singapore engages individuals and organisations towards making a positive change in their lives and business operations. Through awareness campaigns and outreach activities, we aim to educate individuals from all walks of life on how a simple action can add up to make a big difference to our environment and safeguard the world’s biodiversity. We also work with businesses both locally and within the Asia Pacific region to help them identify sustainable business practices and reduce their ecological foot print on the planet.

Shasha Ridzam, Group Head of Global Affairs & Sustainability, AirAsiaShasha joined AirAsia in August 2018 and is now the Group Head of Global Affairs & Sustainability. In this role, she is responsible for AirAsia Group’s governmental and public policy strategy in the areas of aviation, trade, tourism, digital and sustainability within ASEAN and beyond. Her role includes active engagements with governments, international organisations, think tanks and academia in these areas. Prior to AirAsia, Shasha spent 13 years as an economist in Bank Negara Malaysia (the Central Bank of Malaysia) with a focus on economic development, international economics and financial stability. As a Deputy Director, she led a team of economists that provided robust and timely assessments, forecasts and policy advice for monetary policy, financial policy as well as structural issues to the Malaysian Government. Her career in the central bank also included a stint as a core member of the team that formulated Malaysia’s 2010 -2020 Financial Sector Blueprint. At the international level, Shasha spent two years representing South East Asia at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington D.C. where she provided strategic and policy support to advance and safeguard the economic and financial inter-ests of the region. Shasha is an Edward S. Mason Fellow and graduated with a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University and a BSc (Honours) in Economics from the University of Nottingham in the UK.

Carlos Ramon C. Aboitiz, President & COO of Hedcor Business Unit, Aboitiz Power Corporation Carlos Aboitiz is currently the President & COO of the Aboitiz Power Corporation’s Run of River (ROR) Hydro Business Unit, Hedcor. With more than 40 years of experience, Hedcor is the leading run-of-river developer and operator in the Philippines. Today, Hedcor manages and operates 22 hydropower plants and supplies the country with 270 MW of clean and renew-able energy. AboitizPower, is one of the largest power producers in the Philippines whose balanced mix of energy assets include 44 generation facilities located all over the Philippines. AboitizPower and its partners generate a total of 3,350 megawatts of net sellable capacity, of which approximately 35 percent comes from renewable energy. AboitizPower is a subsidiary of the Aboitiz Group of Companies, with investments in power, financial services, food, infrastructure, and real estate. Mr. Carlos Aboitiz also sits on the board of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation (RAFI), SN AboitizPower (SNAP) and of AboitizLand. He earned his MBA from INSEAD and his undergraduate degree from the College of the Holy Cross.

Juyun Moon, Public Policy Associate, GR KoreaJuyun Moon is a seasoned public affairs and strategic communications professional with history of working both in the National Assembly, in-house and as an external consultant in South Korea. She is experienced in implementing public affairs projects across industries including environment, energy, internet technology and software. Before joining GR Korea, Juyun was a policy analyst for Korea’s dominant telecommunication company, KT, and served as an aide to a very senior member of the Korean National Assembly. Juyun holds a B.A. in Political Science and International Relations from Yonsei University, Seoul, and is fluent in Eng-lish, Korean and Mandarin Chinese.

Anita Neville, Vice President of Corporate Communications and Sustainability Relations, Golden Agri-ResourcesAnita Neville joined GAR from 10 years with the Rainforest Alliance, an international non-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation of tropical forests. Neville led the design and implementation of the first global marketing strategy for the Rainforest Alliance’s certification and verification services and served as represent-ative for the Australia and Oceania region. She is a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) auditor, specialising in the social aspects of the respected forestry standard. She began her career with WWF UK, rising to Head of Advocacy where she worked to secure the HSBC Investing in Nature partnership, work that continues to this day in the form of the HSBC Water Programme.

Helen Wailes, Director, Communications & Public Relations, Boston ScientificHelen Wailes is the Director of Communications and Public Affairs at Boston Scientific, a US-based medical device company with a strong presence across the Asia Pacific region. Xiaowei Liu, Vice President, External Relations, Asia Pacific, ShellLiu Xiaowei is Regional Vice President, Asia Pacific External Relations at Shell. Xiaowei was appointed as Regional Vice President of External Relations (ER) for Shell in Asia with effect of 1 October 2016. Xiaowei is accountable for leading the ER function in 15 countries (circa 100 people) across Asia in support of the license to operate and to grow the Shell business in the region, and build and leverage Shell’s leadership in energy industry to enhance the overall brand and reputation of Shell. Since joining Shell in China in 1995, Xiaowei has led ER functions of various sizes at country, regional and global business level and worked in Shell’s down-stream, upstream and corporate functions in China, UK, Netherlands and Singapore.In her 20 plus years in Shell, Xiaowei has been Public Affairs and Brand Manager for Shell China, Group External Relations and Policy Development Advisor, Regional Advisor for Asia Pacific, Governance and Stake-holder Manager for Gas & Power China, and Communications Director for Shell Greater China. Most recently, Xiaowei was Global ER Lead for Integrated Gas & Communications General Manager for Asia Pacific. Established in 2010, Export Now is the largest off-shore operator of China e-commerce stores, helping brands from around the world in strategy and operations.In Government, Lavin served as Under Secretary for International Trade at the U.S. Department of Commerce 2005-2007. In that capacity, Lavin served as lead trade negotiator for both China and India and was the senior policy official in the Department responsible for commercial policy, export promotion, and trade negotiations across the globe. Lavin was U.S. Ambassador to the Singapore from 2001-05, where his duties included helping negotiate the U.S.-Singapore Free Trade Agreement.In the private sector, Lavin served in senior finance and management positions in Hong Kong and Singapore with Edel-man, Bank of America, and Citibank. Previously, Lavin served in the George H.W. Bush and Reagan Administrations, working in the Department of Commerce, Department of State, National Security Council, and White House. Lavin served as Director of the White House Office of Political Affairs 1987-89.Lavin serves as Chairman of the International Council of the National University of Singapore School of Medicine, serves on the Board of Directors of UOB, a regional bank, and on the Board of Directors of Advanced MedTech Holdings, a medical technologies company.

Steven Chan, Senior Director and Regional Head of Government Relations, Asia Pacific, PaypalSteven Xavier Chan is the senior director and regional head of government relations, Asia-Pacific, for Paypal Inc. Based in Singapore, he leads government advocacy, strategy and outreach efforts in the region. Steven has more than 20 years of combined government and industry experience in international trade and public policy. Prior to joining Paypal in August 2018, he was the managing director and regional head of regulatory, industry and gov-ernment affairs for State Street’s businesses in Asia Pacific. Steven also served as Director of Government Relations and Corporate Social Responsibility for the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai. He previously held various positions in the US government as a Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State with overseas and domestic assignments in Mexico, China and Washington D.C., and as Deputy Director for China and Mongolia Affairs with the Department of Commerce. He also worked at Booz Allen Hamilton and Deloitte Consulting supporting change management and enter-prise transformation projects for large organizations.Steven currently serves a board member of the National Center for APEC and the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong. Steven earned a Master of Arts in international economics and China studies from the School of Advanced International Studies at The Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor of Arts in international affairs and economics from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. He is a native of Hawaii.

Ser-Jin Lee, Head of Compliance and Government Affairs, Grab Financial GroupSer-Jin Lee is the Head of Compliance and Government Relations for Grab Financial Group. Prior to joining SWIFT, Rahul was Head of Asia Pacific Financial Services Practice and Strategic Projects portfolio for NTT Data, where he was responsible for establishing a banking & payments related product and service portfolio, and leading strategic regional initiatives.Previously, Rahul has played a key role in regional core transformation programs of banking clients as a part of Accenture’s ASEAN Financial Services practice and also led Core Banking & Payments Consulting Practice within CSC India (previously Covansys).

Christopher Davison, CEO and Co-founder, BigPayChristopher is the Group CEO and Co-Founder of BigPay. Christopher is originally from London where he worked in in-vestment banking, tech VC, with a strong track record of both investing in, and setting up, several successful fintech and data analytics companies. He holds an undergraduate degree from Oxford and a masters from Cambridge.

Karin has a Master in Arts in European and Interna-tional Law of Leiden University and speaks various European languages.

Dr Hsien-Hsien Lei, VP Medical & Scientific Affairs, MedtronicDr. Hsien-Hsien Lei oversees APAC medical affairs, clinical research activities, training & education, and value-based healthcare (VBHC), which includes health policy and reimbursement at Medtronic. Hsien is also responsible for communicating Medtronic’s medical and scientific value proposition in a balanced and evi-dence-based manner to drive the company’s medical, clinical, and scientific leadership in the region.Hsien’s career has spanned the scientific, clinical, and commercial sides of healthcare with experiences that include bench research, epidemiological and biostatistical data analyses and modeling, pharmacy clerkship, business development, and scientific, medical, and healthcare communications. Prior to Medtronic, Hsien was the general manager of Ogilvy CommonHealth Asia Pacific where she helped clients in pharma, medtech, and public sectors deliver regional integrated healthcare communication programs that encompassed medical education, public relations, advertising and promotion, and digital.Hsien has lived and worked in the US, Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, UK, and is now based in Singapore. She is an elected member of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) Singapore Board of Governors and Vice Chair of the Asia Pacific MedTech Association (APACMed) Medical and Clinical Affairs Committee.Hsien holds a PhD in Epidemiology from The Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health where she was the recipient of a US National Institutes of Health Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology Training Grant. Her doctoral thesis explored the genetic epidemiology of end-stage renal disease and type 2 diabetes. She completed her post-doctoral fellowship at National Taiwan University Hospital in the Department of Endocri-nology. Hsien also holds a BA (with honors) in Human Biology from Stanford University.

She was the Additional Advocate General for the State of Assam in the Supreme Court of India, New Delhi from 2011 till 2016.A self- proclaimed policy aficionado, she works primarily in law, regulations and policy – life sciences, high technology, shipping, and other regulated sectors.She was honoured by India Corporate Counsel Associ-ation with India’s most trusted Corporate Lawyer. In the World IP Forum’s September 2017 publication her name appeared in the list of Top 100 Powerful Women in Law. Ms. Sarma is Regional Advisory Council member of DIA India. She is also director in the Board of Biogen Idec Biotech India Pvt Ltd.Ms. Sarma has Majored in History from Miranda House, University of Delhi in 1989 and LL.B. degree from Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi (1992). She interned with Thelen, Reid and Priest in their Washing-ton DC offices.

Dr Alan Ong, Medical Director, AIADr Alan Ong has overall responsibility for AIA Singapore’s healthcare strategy, the execution of AIA Singa-pore’s healthcare programmes, and the performance of the healthcare portfolio. He has over 15 years of experience in the public and private sectors, and has worked as a clinician on the ground, as a policymaker in multiple positions in the Ministry of Health, and as a management consultant with the Boston Consulting Group. Dr Ong has a Master of Public Health from Harvard University and obtained his medical degree from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. He is a registered specialist in Public Health.

Dyan Shinto E. Nugroho, Chief of Public Policy and Government Relations, GOJEK GroupShinto Nugroho is the Chief of Public Policy and Government Relations at GO-JEK. GO-JEK is a social enterprise that helps amplify Indonesia’s motorcycle taxis and has now grown to become Indonesia’s leading on-demand multi-service platform. She has more than 15 years of experience as lawyer and public policy specialist. Prior to GO-JEK, she was at Google Indonesia, focusing on issues related to innovations and technology.Before joining Google, Shinto Nugroho is Special Assistant of Trade Minister of Indonesia. She obtained her law degree through University of Indonesia, and Master Degrees from Columbia Law School and London School of Economics and Political Science. She was chosen as one of the female leaders to represent Indo-nesia in New Asia Summit in New Delhi in 2013, and was listed as one of Asia 21 Young Leaders in 2012.
