A1 Telekom AustriaIn July 2010, the European Union passed legislation that required mobile operators to implement bill shock measures for data roaming in Europe. As the leading telecommunications operator in Austria with over 5.3 million mobile subscribers and almost 40% market share, A1 Telekom Austria wanted to comply with this legislation and avoid bill shock for its customers. Meeting this legislation required that data usage and spend are tracked in real-time, and notifications sent to customers when they reach 80% of a pre-defined limit.

SolutionOpenet supplied Evolved Charging and Network Edge Rating products, enabling A1 Telekom Austria to:

yy Meet EU Data Roaming Regulations by improving transparency of customer data and roaming costs to avoid bill shockyy Manage roaming data usage in real-time for subscribers, and enforce data volume or monetary capsyy Notify its subscribers when pre-defined thresholds have been met, & offer the option to extend their usage beyond the cap

Openet integrated their solutions with Nortel and Cisco/Starent network equipment, and billing systems, including Amdocs. As bill shock measures need to be real-time, Openet collects and rates data usage and makes the records available in real-time. This results in significant savings as the billing systems don’t need expensive additions built to enable them to cater for real-time applications such as bill shock controls.

ResultsUsing Openet’s Evolved Charging and Network Edge Rating products, A1 Telekom Austria was able to meet the EU data roaming regulations well in advance of the regulatory deadline. The real-time capabilities gave A1 Telekom Austria the competitive edge to manage data balances, trigger notifications, and provide subscribers with maximum flexibility when roaming in the EU.

Enabling Self-Care with Real-Time Data for Upselling, Marketing and Bill Shock Controls

North African Mobile OperatorThis Tier 1 operator in North Africa, with over 35M subscribers, wanted to increase data usage and revenues – by telling customers exactly how much money they’re spending on data services and giving them options to buy more data add-ons and services, on top of their bundled allocation. This approach is not just about providing anti-bill shock measures, it’s also about delivering a better customer experience by giving customers full visibility and control, and enabling them to buy out of bundle add-ons and services.

SolutionOpenet supplied their Policy Manager, Balance Manager and Interaction Gateway products to enable this operator to:

yy Enable customers to buy data add-ons when in bundle allocations are used up – by volume and also by offer type – e.g. streaming music serviceyy Avoid bill shock by providing alerts against customer defined spend limitsyy Provide flexibility to the customer by enabling them to set their own limits and change when neededyy Provide real-time data roaming usage notifications and enable purchase of additional ‘blocks’ of data through web self-

care

ResultsDelivering ‘peace of mind’ to customers by providing transparency of usage and cost is proven to stimulate usage and spend. Customers know exactly how much they’re spending and if their data allocation is used up then they can quickly and easily top up with new blocks of data. Providing real-time usage information and enabling customers to set their own spending limits and buy data and service add-ons when they want them is seen as key to providing a personalized service and delivering a better experience.

M2M Mediation & Data Management – Cable TV Audience and Engagement Measurement

North American Cable and Multi-Play OperatorThis Tier 1 operator is one of the largest cable TV companies in North America. It also provides wireline and wireless voice and broadband services and has a customer base that includes over 12M video customers, 10M high speed data customers, 4.9M voice customers, and 5M double play and 4.2M triple play customers. In order to better support marketing and advertising campaigns to this growing customer base this operator wanted detailed TV viewing and usage data. The traditional approach of audience sampling by media research companies to collect viewership data would not deliver the detail that this operator required – they wanted real-time viewing metrics based on actual viewership data.

SolutionOpenet supplied their M2M Mediation and Data Management solutions to enable:

yy Mediation of large scale data generated by M2M devicesyy Collection of real-time TV usage – includes second-by-second click-stream (tuning and ITV) and HSD usageyy Advanced audience intelligence – usage data enriched with reference and subscriber information, and integrated with

data warehouse for reports and analyticsyy Delivery of business analytics and customizable reports of actual viewing datayy Support for post-campaign ad delivery with reports on actual ad impressions

ResultsThis operator is able to get a single integrated view of actual customer viewing behaviour and service usage. This enables them to gain a deeper and more relevant understanding of their customers’ behaviour, which in turn more effectively monetize ad inventory, offer compelling services and promotions as well as delivering a personalized video experience for customers.

North American Mobile OperatorWith over 50 million mobile customers, this operator offers next generation mobile services, including LTE. Delivering a strong customer experience is key to this operator’s success. In order to deliver the best customer network experience this operator needed to be pro-active in controlling the signaling storm that often comes along with increased smartphone and app usage. Network signaling can become a problem because many popular smartphone apps are “chatty,” and require constant queries of the network for updates. The impact of uncontrolled, chatty app signaling can reduce network availability, exhaust the DHCP IP address pool, reduce AAA capacity and impact device battery life.

SolutionOpenet supplied their Interaction Gateway product in order to enable this operator to:

yy Control chatty app signaling by coordinating communication between Openet Policy Manager and a specialized Interaction Agent that provides on-device signaling managementyy Delivers policy controls direct on the handset/deviceyy Control network costs and enhance customer experience

ResultsBy implementing Openet’s Interaction Gateway product, integrated with Openet Policy Manager, this operator will enjoy projected savings of more than $45 million over three years, by reducing the signaling traffic by up to 30%. Managing the signaling storm from chatty apps will enable this operator to control network infrastructure costs, and at the same time deliver a superior customer experience through improved network performance. In addition, customers will enjoy up to a 50 percent increase of mobile device battery life, with no noticeable change to the app’s functionality.
