Off to a Great StartBy Doug Gee, Superintendent [email protected]

It is hard to believe we have completed five weeks of school already. The students and staff have done an excellent job of working hard to create a climate of excitement, hard work and a dedication to getting better every day. Our staff has been using their Wednesday afternoons for professional development train-ing on technology. We are working hard to be ready for January when we roll out our one-to-one initiative. Our goal is to have ev-ery student in grades 6-12 with a Chromebook by January and to have the k-5 students all have a computer by the start of the 2015 school year. The goal of placing a computer in each student’s hands is to adopt a culture that extends beyond the Boyer Valley classroom walls. It enables students to connect to and explore places they never even thought of or knew existed. Digital con-tent enables teachers to individualize tools and instruction. We realize that 60% of the jobs today’s students will do are not even created yet!!

The district is also exploring the possibility of adding an Agricul-ture program. The Board and I feel strongly that we have a strong agricultural community, with several of our students coming from some type of agricultural background. We will continue to update everyone on the progress. If you have any questions or would like to be involved in this process please feel free to contact me.

EnrollmentIt looks like our enrollment will be up this year, which would

be the first time in four years our enrollment has increased. Our open enrollment is also excellent. This will be the first time in over six years that Boyer Valley School District has more students open enrolled into the district than open enrolled out to another district. This is a sign that parents want to send their children to Boyer Valley for their education.

Parent Teacher ConferencesParent teacher conferences will be October 27-28 from 4:00-

7:30 PM. Students will be dismissed at 2:15/2:30. I would en-courage all parents to come in and talk with your child’s teachers. We realize that it takes the parents, student and staff all working together to educate young people.

Activities Department Homecoming is October 3rd. We have several events planned

for the week. Friday, September 26th students decorated down-town in the afternoon. Sunday, September 28th was the soup supper, coronation and jersey auction at the high school starting at 5:00 PM. A powder puff football game followed by a bonfire was held on September 30 starting at 7:00 PM at the football field and fairgrounds. We’ll have a pep rally at 1:00 PM on Friday, October 3rd followed by the parade at 2:00. The football game against River Valley starts at 7:00 PM. Come out and support the kids.

Booster Club Membership DriveThe Boyer Valley Athletic Department did a membership drive

the end of August and we have had a fantastic response. Do-nations are presently over $6500. If you are still interested in donating you can go to the Boyer Valley website and print off a form and mail the form and check to Lisa in the high school office. The great thing about the membership drive is 100% of the money goes to our kids.

If you have any questions, please call the school office. I also invite and encourage you to visit our school, meet our staff, and stop by my office for a visit. We welcome your continued involve-ment with the school. Please do not hesitate to call me at school (643-2251) if you have a question or concern. I am truly enjoying working with the students, staff and community of Boyer Valley.

New Activity Calendar/ScheduleBoyer Valley has switched to a new activity calendar/

scheduler for events. You can find the calendar on the school website. If you would like to get a text or email notice of canceled/rescheduled/changes to events please go to the website and sign-up for these notifications. There is a link that says notify me. If you click on the link and follow directions it will walk you through the process. If you have questions please call Lisa or Lori in the BVS Office.

ConferencesFirst quarter conferences will be held on Monday, October 27,

and Tuesday, October 28. Students will be dismissed at 2:15/2:30 PM on those days. Conference times will be 4:00 PM – 7:30 PM. Elementary teachers will meet to schedule conferences and try to coordinate times with all of the students in your family. There will be no school on Friday, October 31.

Student AbsencesWhen your child is absent from school, please be sure to call

the school and let us know the nature of the absence. Hollie will call you if you happen to forget, but it is more efficient if you can call the school rather than having Hollie call several numbers to get the information we need. If you can call before 8:30 AM, it will provide more time for your child’s teachers to get the necessary work together for the day. Feel free to leave a message on Hollie’s voicemail if you call before 7:45 AM. If you know your child is going to be absent from school the next day, you can leave a message on Hollie’s voicemail the night before the absence. Along those same lines, if you should encounter a change in address, phone number, or employment, please call the school so we can update our emer-gency contact information.

Family EmergenciesFamilies often encounter emergencies or problems that can

interfere with the continuity of the family’s schedule or structure. This can often lead to difficulties at school for the students in those families. Please feel free to share such emergencies or problems with your child’s teachers. This may help answer questions about problems your child’s teacher may be seeing in your child at school. You don’t have to share all of the details concerning the situation, but if we know there is some circumstance at home that might be weighing heavily on the mind of your child we can make necessary accommodations at school.

Child CustodyDivorce and the impending custody issues can be a difficult situ-

ation. In many cases mothers and fathers are granted equal rights where their children are concerned. In other cases one parent may be given custodial rights. In the latter case, a non-custodial parent may request copies of report cards, newsletters, and other informa-tion. This request should be made in writing each school year with your child’s new teacher. If the custodial parent has a court order that limits the rights of one parent in matters such as custody or visitation, the custodial parent should deliver a copy of the court order to the office of each school that his/her children attend. The

parent should also discuss the matter with the children’s teachers to ensure the court order is fully understood. Please remember that the school must follow the law in matters of custody and provide equal rights to each parent…unless a court order is produced and instructs us to act otherwise.

Late WorkEach school year we seem to encounter problems with upper

elementary students failing to complete homework assignments. This is an issue we would like to get resolved as early as possible. We are asking parents to please check their student’s school bag each night or simply ask him/her each night about homework that needs to be completed. Setting a regular time each night to com-plete homework is a good routine for families to use. If there are nights your child does not have homework you can use that time to do some reading together. Students need regular homework and bedtime routines to be successful at school. Also, communicate regularly with your child’s teacher to make sure homework and other school responsibilities are getting fulfilled.

Morning ArrivalsLike last year we are still having students that are arriving at

school too early. It is not uncommon for students to arrive at the buildings at or before 7:30 AM. The school does not have staff members on duty to supervise until 7:45 AM. Even if your child eats breakfast at school, he/she should not be at the building before 7:45 AM. Please adjust your schedules in order for your child to arrive at the school at the appropriate time (7:45 AM or later).

Dressing for the WeatherAs fall arrives it becomes more important for parents to make

sure that their children are coming to school properly dressed for the variance in temperatures. It is always best to make sure your child it dressed warmly for the morning temperatures. You can al-ways layer clothing that can be taken off later or send other clothes to school for your child to wear in case the temperatures rise throughout the day. At this time of year it is especially important for children to wear shoes rather than flip-flops or sandals. Flip-flops and sandals don’t adequately protect the feet.

Extracurricular Activity ConductElementary students are constantly reminded at school about be-

havior expectations at extracurricular events. Elementary students are reminded that they are present at the events to be a spectator. They are not to be running in the hallways or around the school grounds unattended. It is explained to students that they can use the restroom, get a drink of water, or visit the concession stand dur-ing breaks in the activity. Examples of such breaks are time outs, quarter breaks, halftime, or between games. The school asks that parents help by reinforcing these rules with their children. Students are told that they are not to be kicking balls, tackling, or playing rough during football games. They should also not participate in games or activities that distract others from watching the football games. Thank you for your help!

School Spirit DayEach Friday we like to show our Bulldog and Bullpup pride by

wearing clothing that represents our school. This can be Boyer Valley clothing or just attire that displays our school colors. Please encourage your child to display his/her school pride each Friday!

Iowa AssessmentsThe Iowa Assessments (formerly Iowa Tests of Basic Skills or

ITBS) will be given in the fall this year rather than the spring. We feel that giving the assessments earlier in the year will allow us to get those results back earlier in order to guide our instructional decisions. We will give the Iowa Assessments during the week of November 17-21. It is especially important for students to be well-nourished and well-rested that week. Please discuss with your child the importance of doing his/her best work on these assess-ments. If our students do their best work it will give us a clearer picture of how we can help them.

Picture RetakesPicture re-takes will be held on Tuesday, October 22. If you

are unsatisfied with your child’s first picture or if your child missed school the day of the original picture session, please contact the elementary office to get your child’s name on the re-take list. TeammatesUPDATE

By Sarah Malone, Teammates Coordinator [email protected]

The Coaches’ Mentoring Challenge is an annual campaign to connect more youth to mentors that began with Coach Tom Os-borne at the University of Nebraska and Coach Bill Snyder at Kan-sas State University in 2008. Within six years, coaches from Big 12 and Big Ten schools in Iowa, Michigan and Minnesota joined the challenge and rallied nearly 9,000 new volunteers in 2013.

In 2014, all ten of the Big 12 football coaches are joining the effort. All of the coaches are challenging fans to volunteer to mentor youth in their communities. Many of the coaches in both conferences are also teamed up with one of MENTOR’s affiliate Mentoring Partnerships and other nonprofit partners.

Our local chapter goal is to recruit 5 new mentors to our pro-gram during the challenge. The challenge launched on August 1 and will conclude November 30. 687 mentors have been recruited for TeamMates since the beginning of the challenge. Visit coachesmentoringchallenge.org for more information on the National Challenge.

Join the Challenge! Become a mentor with Teammates Mentor-ing Program. It’s easy to get started: Step 1. Apply; Step 2. Train; Step 3. Match. You can apply online at www.teammates.org or pick up an application at either school building. Making the “one hour” difference is now easier than before. The hour represents the time it takes you to leave your home, get to school, meet with your student, and get back home. You will spend approximately 30 minutes with your mentee a week.

Current mentors and mentees met for a Kickoff breakfast the first week in September. At the breakfast students shared with their mentors activities they would like to work on this school year and talked about what they did over their summer breaks. Team-Mates matches meet for at least 30 minutes a week at school.

Thank you to our current mentors for the time they donate to our students: Tom Amsberry, Theresa McAllister, Nancy Mitchell, Melanie Laubscher, Todd Johnsen, Sharon Lee, Rebecca Eimer-mann, Jeri Vogt, Donna Brasel, Alex Brown, Chad Soma, Robert Brink, William Eimermann, Michelle Garside, Mary Koenig, Beth Gaskell, Carla Johnsen, Deana Swenson, Joni Houston, Barney Murphy.

We hope to add to this list soon! Join the team, be a mentor!!

MS/HSNews&NOTESBookFAIR

Boyer Valley North will be holding a Scholastic Book Fair on October 27 and October 28 in the Boyer Valley Elementary Library. The hours for the bookfair will be 2:30-7:30. Hopefully we will have available copies of the NEW Diary of a Wimpy Kid-The Long Haul.

From ‘Scholastic,’ “Parents did you know? Reading at home on a daily basis can impact a child’s success in school and in life.

A home library is an idea space where children expand their knowledge and vocabulary, and develop stronger thinking skills.

Be involved. Learn about your children’s interests and prefer-ences. Help them build an idea space filled with books they can read alone... and with you.”

NHSINDUCTIONPlease add to your November calendars that NHS induction will

be on Thursday, November 20, at 10:30AM in the Boyer Valley South Auditorium. More information will be in the next newsletter as to the new members and who are speaker will be.

Boyer Valley Community Schools Parent Messenger Center

The Boyer Valley School will be using the JMC Parent Mes-sage Center this year to call, text, or email parents of emergency/weather related announcements or general school information.

HOW DO YOU SIGN UP FOR TEXTS AND VOICE CALLS?The school has initiated the program to contact the primary

contacts you listed at registration. However, if you want to make changes or add a number, you may go to the Boyer Valley website at www.boyer-valley.k12.ia.us , under JMC online grades sign in to the JMC account. Your username will be the student’s primary contact’s last name. For those families who have used this for student progress reports your password will be set, if you do not have a password call the school office (712-643-2251, Dunlap or 712-674-3248, Dow City). For parents who do not have internet access the office may enable the text message and phone numbers to be called for that particular parent, again call the office in the building your child attends.

By logging into Parent Access the parent is allowed up to 8 phone numbers:

•This number is allowed to receive text message.•This number is to be called for a specific area such as emer-

gency/weather related or you may check any combination or all at once. (This will be a phone call to selected number)

Parents also have the ability through parent access to request an email be sent for period attendance, missing scores and grade percentage reasons. For further instructions you may view a JMC instructional video at jmcinc.com/resources/instructional-videos and watch “Parent Access Parent Alerts.”

Several junior high and high school parents have used our JMC online grade system in the past to keep updated on their child(ren)’s grade progress throughout the year. This feature is now being offered for the 4th & 5th grade students. If you have not and would like to access this program go to the school website www.boyer-valley.k12.ia.us, under JMC online grades to log in. Just inform the office of a password to set it up.

Middle School ‘BOB’ Participants MeetBy Linda McQueen MS English/Language Arts [email protected]

Sixteen 7th and 8th grade students will represent Boyer Valley in the Southwest Iowa Middle School Battle of the Books. “BOB” is an online contest based on the reading of 20 different books. Student teams will take a multiple choice test in March.

Those participating include 7th graders Jessica Fokken, Austin Grant, Kyle Hast, Dalton Kline, Rena Nelson, and Kirstin Pafford; 8th graders involved in the competition are Ben Behrendt, Tyler Brummer, Megan Coberly, Sid Christensen, Abe Davie, Colin Gar-rett, Olivia Heistand, Conlan Petersen, Katy Puck, and Caleigh VanHouten. No one member of the team has to read all the books, but each book will be read by several people for a better understanding of characters, plot, theme, etc. The online test in March will include authors’ names, and will be under the supervi-sion of BOB advisors Rhonda Lee and Linda McQueen. The top 20 teams in Southwest Iowa will be invited to attend the ultimate Battle at Tri-Center Schools in Neola, Iowa, on April 22, 2015.

Students met this week to get study materials and to check out their first books. They’re deciding on team names and scheduling discussion times. Wish them luck and good reading.

Counselor’sCORNERBy Paul Marlin, MS/HS Guidance [email protected], @BVCounselor

Welcome to another addition of the Counselor’s Corner! This month’s edition will recap what has happened at the begin-ning of the year and preview the upcoming events for October and November in the guidance department.

Beginning of the Year RecapAg Day 2014

On September 11, all of the 7th graders attended Ag Day in Denison. Students learned a variety of things including: careers in agriculture, importance of agriculture, and farm/fire safety. Check-out my Twitter page (@BVCounselor) for a few pictures of Boyer Valley students participating at Ag Day.

Crawford County College FairAll of the Seniors attended the Crawford County College Fair in

Denison on September 25. Students had the opportunity to meet with colleges, universities, and military agencies, as well as listen to a presentation on post-high school preparation. Checkout my Twit-ter page (@BVCounselor) for a few pictures of the college fair.

NWEA TestingStudents in grades 2-11 took the NWEA tests starting the week

of September 15. In the past it has taken our district up to 5 weeks to complete testing. This year our district purchased 195 Chrome-books for teachers and students, which enabled us to complete testing in just over 1 week. Students and teachers both agreed that testing went much better as a result of the added technology.

October & November EventsIowa Assessments

Our district uses Iowa Assessments as a form of academic as-sessment that we report to the state. During the week of November 17-21, students in grades 2-11 will be taking the Iowa Assessments. The high school will test after Academy classes, so that students at-tending college level classes will not be affected. I strongly encour-age students to get a good night’s sleep the night before the tests and eat a good breakfast that morning so that they can perform to the best of their abilities. Please talk with your child/children about the importance of these tests. Thank you!

PSATThe PSAT/NMSQT will be offered for 11th graders on October

15. This is a Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualify-ing Test that helps students improve their skills and prepare for college. The test also helps students qualify for college scholar-ships. The test is optional, however I recommend it because it helps students get a feel for the ACT and SAT, as well as give them a chance to qualify for college scholarships. The test costs $14.00 and is given at the school.

Financial Aid NightIn the past we have had a Financial Aid Night for seniors and

their parents during the 2nd night of Parent-Teacher conferences. Two years ago we moved the Financial Aid Night to January and I received lots of positive feedback about having it later in the school year. This year the Financial Aid Night will be January 26 at 6pm. I strongly encourage all seniors who are planning to at-tend a post-secondary institution next year to attend and to bring their parents/guardians. If parents or students have any ques-tions before the Financial Aid Night, please feel free to contact me at the school.

Junior InformationJunior year is a great time for students to begin preparing for life

after high school. I strongly encourage all Juniors to take the ACT at least once (preferably twice) this year to help prepare them for college. I have free ACT prep materials available in my office for students. The next two ACT dates are October 25 and December 13.

If Juniors have not started considering where they want to go to college when they graduate, I strongly recommend that they start thinking about this right away. Senior year will come very quickly, so it is important to start thinking about college now. I also recommend that parents/guardians sit down with their child/children to discuss the importance of college.

I am available at school to help students if they have any questions.

Senior MeetingsEvery year I do individual senior meetings with each of the se-

niors for about 20 minutes. The goal of the meetings is to ensure that every student is on track to graduate and to help students develop a plan for after high school. This year the senior meet-ings will be the week of Sept. 29-Oct 3. Students are welcome to schedule additional times to meet with me to discuss graduation, their plans after high school, and scholarships.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 Counselor’s Corner

Additional Senior InformationSenior year is a very important year for students as they work

hard to graduate and prepare for their futures. I encourage all seniors who are planning to attend college to apply for at least 3 colleges. The reason for this is if they do not get into their first college choice, they still have a couple backup options. A large variety of college representatives come to our school to meet with students. I strongly recommend that seniors sign-up to meet with prospective colleges to ask questions and get more information about the colleges. To meet with the college representatives, students simply need to write their names on the sign-up sheets located on the window of my office. Parents/guardians are al-lowed to meet with the prospective college afterwards for a little while; however they must tell me ahead of time so that I can make sure the college representative has time in their schedule.

I also strongly encourage all seniors planning to attend college to spend at least 1 hour per week applying for scholarships. I have a list of scholarship websites available in my office, as well as online. I will also be posting scholarships in my office and online as I receive them from scholarship donators. You can find my webpage by going to www.boyer-valley.k12.ia.us, click on MS/HS, and then click on Guidance.

If you would like to receive updates when new scholarships come out or when colleges visit our school, follow me on Twitter @BVCounselor.

Tutoring ProgramA few years ago I created a tutoring program for students in

middle school and high school who were struggling academically. The tutoring program is up and running again this year for grades 6-12. If your son/daughter could benefit from a tutor, please either contact me or have your son/daughter talk to me at school. Tutor-ing can be done before/after school and during study hall. I can-not guarantee availability of tutors for each timeframe, however I will do my best to match tutors to requested times.

Tutoring students is a great way help others and build a stu-dent’s resume at the same time. If high school students are inter-ested in becoming a tutor, please stop by my office during school.

Thank You for Donations!I would like to thank everyone who donated school supplies

to our school this year. We are blessed to have so many great people in our community who donated school supplies for our students! I cannot thank all of you enough!

As the 6-12 guidance counselor for Boyer Valley School District, it is my job to help students succeed inside and outside of school. If there is anything that I can do to help your child succeed, please do not hesitate to contact me. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, you may contact me at 712-643-2258 or [email protected]. Also, follow me on Twitter @BVCounselor to receive updates from the guidance department.
