ESALEN® MASSAGE: WHAT IS IT?

Esalen® Massage is the authentic and original expression of the practice better known in Italy as Californian massage. This is a presence and awareness based practice, able to awaken self-balancing processes in the body, stimulating growth, healing and self evolution. It works on the physical, mental and emotional levels, involving the energetic and spiritual dimension, and stands out for its sensitive and creative approach to each person and to each session. Esalen® Massage was founded in the 1970s at the Esalen Institute, Big Sur, California, a community that since then has offered its visitors a sanctuary from urban chaos and an opportunity to push their personal and social boundaries.

ESALEN® MASSAGE: THE PROGRAMME

The Esalen® Massage & Bodywork training will teach you how to experience massage as a holistic approach to health and natural balance. Through demonstrations, lessons, coaching and practical-constant supervision, you will have the opportunity to obtain a large vision of the Esalen approach from an experiential point of view.

The teaching will be led by Ellen Watson and Ingrid May, teachers at Esalen Institute, from Big Sur, California, for the first time teaching this training in Italy.

ELLEN WATSON

Founder of MovingVentures and creator of the Movement Arts Program at the Esalen Institute, she taught and lived at Esalen for over 40 years. Ellen is a teacher of Esalen® Massage & Bodywork, 5Rhythms®, Olotropic Breathwork, Vibrance®, Wake Up & Roar, Touching Essence™.

INGRID MAY A German-trained physiotherapist, Ingrid moved to the Esalen Institute, California, where she became a member of the Esalen® Massage movement at Esalen and around the world. In 1996 she founded and directed the Oasis School for the Healing Arts in Argentina.

ELENA GILLI Translator and assistant Founder and President of the non profit organization TACTUS, Elena is deeply interested in spreading the culture and experience of contact in Italy and abroad. Elena is a teacher of Esalen® Massage & Bodywork.

ESALEN® MASSAGE: THE TRAINING

The course offers 100 hours of integral Esalen® Massage experience, including important anatomical and physiological explorations linking theory to practice. In addition to these, there will be 50 hours of documented training/practice, which will allow you to experience massage, emphasizing body mechanics, self-care and creativity. The course program includes the treatment of five major-areas: - Skills in Esalen® Massage, technique and theoretical fundamentals - Communication skills - Applied Anatomy and Physiology - Professional ethics - Practices of movement, meditation and self-care After completion of the course, you will give two massage sessions to the teachers, and 15 post-course massage sessions on 10 different receiving subjects.

ESALEN® MASSAGE SKILLS, TECHNICS AND THEORETICAL FUNDATIONS (70 hours)

• Understanding the experiential nature of the method

• Definition of the experience of presence, awareness and attention

• Opening and closing of the massage session

• Comprehension of the typical long strokes along the body,

anterior and posterior, and their relaxing integration

functions

• Detailed work on the front body and back Nudity relationship and methods of adequate customer coverage

• Special cases (working with a physical pathology, working in a lateral

laying position, geriatric massage)

COMMUNICATION SKILLS (5 HOURS)

• Basic understanding of the communication skills given

by the Gestalt process

• Gestaltic language

• Basic communication skills of dialogue

• How to deal with misunderstanding, if it occurs in the

relationship between customer and operator

• Communication of the ethical boundaries of the professional relationship

APPLIED ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY (10 HOURS)

• Integration of anatomical knowledge of specific areas of the body

• Applying relevant anatomical and physiological informations in the general flow and structure of the massage session to a specific client

• Understanding of the motor, muscular and tendon system

• Comprehension of the tissues change in relation to touch

• Recognition of pathological conditions for which touch or

massage are contraindicated

PROFESSIONAL ETHICS (5 HOURS)

• Understanding Transference and Counter-transference

• Understanding the appropriate boundaries within the relationship between customer and operator

• How to deal with difficult customers

MOVEMENT PRACTICES, MEDITATION AND SELF CARE (10 HOURS)

• Body Strengthening through Yoga and other practices

(Chi-Gong, 5 Rhythms, etc...)

• Relating these practices to the movement around the

table during work

• Using meditation to improve concentration, focusing and

presence during the work

ESALEN® MASSAGE: THE CERTIFICATION

After completing the training, you will receive the certificate of Operator specialized in Esalen® Massage and, in addition, you will have the opportunity to:

• Obtain the Certificate from the EMBA - Esalen® Massage & Bodywork Association (upon payment of the Esalen certificate ; issuing fee: $150).

• Continue with the training of Esalen® Massage, at the advanced level
