Hello NAMI Stark County members and Friends,
On Thursday, October 11th
from 6-8pm, Kent State University-Stark
Campus’ Minds Matter Club is hosting an Art Show/Benefit Auction
in Kent Stark’s Fine Arts building. The silent auction will include
bidding from 6-7pm. Refreshments will be served and all proceeds
will be donated to NAMI Stark County. No reservations are required. I
urge each of you to come out and support the Minds Matter Club and
NAMI in this effort. It is still possible to donate art items for auction;
please call the NAMI office at 330-455-6264 if you wish to donate.
There is less than 2 weeks till the walk!! Have you signed up yet? IT
IS NOT TOO LATE!! Registration is easy! Go to our website at
www.namistarkcounty.org and click on the Moving Forward Walk
icon. Or call our office at 330-455-6264. This is our biggest event of
the year. I urge you to support us by contributing to this event and by
coming and walking with us. Please come out and show your support
for mental health and for NAMI Stark County!!

Make Your Vote Count on Election Day Tuesday, November 6th is election day. NAMI Stark County urges you to exercise your right to vote. When making your decisions as to who to vote for, please consider the following policy positions in choosing your candidates. NAMI’s State Action Agenda 2012 outlines nine policy objectives and positions that support our goal of ensuring that people living with mental illness receive the treatment and supports they need to lead full and satisfying lives as valued members of the community.
1. Protect public mental health services. Adequate Medicaid funding and public mental health services. 2. Expand access to mental health coverage. Expanding Medicaid eligibility, parity. 3. Ensure that effective mental health services are available. Funding a range of behavioral health
services, Community Integration (intensive home and community based treatment), Medication access (no prior authorization or Fail First), Workforce Development (adequate number of trained mental health professionals), Data Collection (service performance outcomes.)
4. Promote integration of mental health, addictions and primary care. Integrating mental health care with physical health care.
5. Improve the mental health of children, youth and young adults. Early Identification and treatment, home and community based for children/adolescents, juvenile justice diversion, transition-age services.
6. Meet the mental health needs of service members, veterans and their families. Service collaboration between mental health and VA service provision.
7. Provide homes and jobs for people living with mental illness. Permanent supportive housing, supported employment.
8. Eliminate disparities in mental health care. Cultural and linguistic competence in mental health care. 9. End the inappropriate jailing of people living with mental illness. Diversion from incarceration,
appropriate mental health care while in custody, connection to benefits on release readily.

CMS Approves State Plan Amendment to Develop Medicaid Health Homes On September 17th, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) approved Ohio’s Medicaid State
Plan Amendment to develop Medicaid Health Homes for individuals with serious and persistent mental illness
(SPMI). CMS approved health home services provided by community behavioral health centers for Medicaid
beneficiaries who meet the State’s definition of serious and persistent mental illness (including adults with
serious mental illness, or SMI, and children with serious emotional disturbance, or SED) in Butler County,
Adams County, Scioto County, Lawrence County, and Lucas County; effective October 1, 2012.
Governor Kasich’s Job Budget (HB 153) has controlled the slide in services for mental health and addiction after years of cuts and has targeted the following hot spots for improvement:
Invest in housing for Ohioans with mental illness Advance the fight against opiate abuse Target regional “hot spots” in mental health service capacity
Target regional “hot spots” in alcohol and other drug addiction capacity Identify additional areas for savings

Heartland take-home bags another success Every quarter NAMI Stark County
prepares 225 bags of toiletries for the
discharged patients from Heartland
Behavioral Health in Massillon, Ohio.
Heartland, the state psychiatric mental
hospital, serves 13 counties including
Stark. This time we had four volunteers
from Timken Co. participating in the
United Way Day of Caring. Thanks to
Janice Weston, Stefanie Keim, Linda Meyer and Mary Manzell! Thanks also
for the grant from the Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation.

NAMI: The National Alliance on Mental Illness
NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to
improving the lives of persons living with serious mental illness and their families. Founded in 1979, NAMI has become
the nation’s voice on mental illness, a nationwide organization with affiliates in every state and in more than 1,100 local
communities across the country. NAMI is dedicated to the eradication of mental illnesses and to the improvement of the
quality of life of all whose lives are affected by these diseases.
NAMI Stark County
NAMI Stark County is an affiliate of NAMI National and NAMI Ohio. NAMI Stark County is a group of volunteers
whose lives have been touched by mental illness personally or professionally. We are dedicated to improving the lives of
people in Stark County who have been touched by mental illness. We provide free: education and information to the
public; family and peer education and support; advocacy on behalf of people living with mental illness and their families;
and visible public events that raise funds and awareness.
Moving Forward for Mental Health

The Moving Forward for Mental Health event will take place rain or shine!!
Place: Hoover Park Connector Trail (East Maple Street, North Canton) & Hoover Park Pavilion (1875 East Maple Street, North
Canton, Ohio 44720).
Check-in Time: 9:00am at the Hoover Park Pavilion
Walk Start: 10:30am
All participants must register for the event. There is no fee for registration.
Register by September 15th
, 2012 to ensure correct t-shirt size.
Total Distance: 2.2 mile loop trail between ball fields and Washington Square.
Parking: Available at Hoover Park ball fields and Washington Square.

Dogs are not permitted at the Hoover Park Pavilion.
