At Comillas, professors know the students and have a close relationship with them, providing them with personal attention. In the Faculty of Canon Law, professors combine teaching, research, and canonical praxis such as: Judges of the Rota and Metropolitan Courts, Advocates of the Link, Advisers to the Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE, in Spanish) and the Spanish Conference of Religious (CONFER, in Spanish), among other roles.

UNIVERSITY EDUCATION

The Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Canon Law are two Faculties in the larger Universidad Pontificia Comillas, where more than 11,000 students study in various programs. In addition to academic programs, the University offers multiple cultural, pastoral, social and sports activities. PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The program is structured around a two-year cyclical plan with five specializations:

• Dogmatic-Fundamental

• Sacred Scripture

• Spiritual Theology

• History of the Church

• Moral and Pastoral Theology

The program enables students to competently address a wide range of issues related to their specialization.

This Master´s Degree is designed as an initiation to research, in each of the fields of study, according to the theological methodology required by each area. In particular, we examine a broad area of knowledge of Catholic doctrine, taken from Sacred Scripture and Tradition, in order to present more clearly the mystery of Christ in response to the great contemporary cultural movements. Particular importance is given to border issues, interdisciplinary themes and topical subjects, always taking into account the richness of the Christian Tradition.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYMENT

• Teaching in faculties of theology, seminaries, centers for spirituality or religious training, as well as in other secondary or higher education teaching institutions.

• Qualified pastoral activity in pastoral centers, parishes, etc.

• Training to participate in areas of research and dissemination (research groups, courses, academic seminars, conferences and publications, among others).

• Training for the accompaniment of Christian groups and communities in tasks of counseling, leadership, growth in the faith, spiritual accompaniment.

The Licenciate Degree in Theology (S.T.L.) is a postgraduate degree (Master’s Degree in Theology). It presupposes the knowledge and skills acquired in previous studies (Bachelor of Theology, Master in Divinity and their equivalents). The student concentrates his or her interest on a more specific field of study within the various areas of Catholic Theology.

• Those who have completed the Undergraduate Bachelor´s Degree in Theology, or its equivalent, and who wish to deepen their knowledge of the fundamental contents of Theology, The Sacred Scripture, Morals, Spirituality and the History of the Church.

• Future professors of Theology, Exegesis, Moral Doctrine, History of the Church, Spirituality in Diocesan Seminars and Centers for Theological Studies.

• Priests who seek a solid theological training for the pastoral ministry.

METHODOLOGYThe program harmoniously combines different methodologies to achieve optimal learning by the student: class lectures, interpretation and commentary on carefully selected texts (Biblical, traditional, Magisterium, contemporary authors, etc.), presentations in class, debates and colloquia for deepening of knowledge and discourse.

STRUCTUREThe programs, structured over two years, are of a cyclical nature. They consist of several compulsory subjects and numerous electives and seminars, which can be taken over 4 semesters. The Doctorate is conceived as three years of research training.

During this time, the doctoral candidate carries out doctoral research in the form of a thesis, under the direction of a thesis director. In addition, the doctoral candidate completes the educational training with activities spread out over three areas:

TRAINING IN THE SPECIFIC FIELD: participates in forums for research or similar.

TOOLS: manages electronic resources and others, such as the elaboration of a scientific piece of research.

REASONS TO STUDY FOR THE DOCTORATE

The Doctorate program receives the support of a team of professors who are accomplished researchers and widely published. Professors participate in active research groups, in which doctoral students can participate.

Interdisciplinary research is encouraged and is facilitated by the presence of all of the departments in the Doctorate and the collaboration of professors from other faculties of the University.

The library offers extensive materials specialized in theological issues and is equipped with the most modern electronic technology. Each doctoral student receives personalized attention.

AIMED AT

Individuals (i) who hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology, granted by a canonically constituted faculty which is approved by the competent ecclesiastical authority, and (ii) who have obtained the qualification of outstanding or its equivalent both in the written dissertation for the degree (short thesis) and in their licenciate postgraduate studies.

Advanced graduates in the same disciplines, from Universities not constituted by the authority of the Catholic Church, may be admitted by resolution of the Steering Committee of the International Doctoral School, following a favorable report from the program’s academic committee.

OBJECTIVES

Form qualified experts who combine deep knowledge in a particular area of Theology with mastery of

scientifically adequate methodology and the ability to contribute, with an original piece of research, to the advancement of knowledge within their field.

“IGNATIANA” presents 7 stages, 7 modules that open the way to the very core of the Spirituality of Ignacio de Loyola, until completing a total of 60 ECTS credits (including a final paper / short Master’s Thesis of 10 ECTS credits).

POSSIBILITY OF PART-TIME STUDY IN THE MASTER´S PROGRAM

As part of our course itinerary, we will visit the “places and foundations” of Ignatian Spirituality: Loyola, Manresa-Barcelona and Alcalá-Salamanca, to offer an adequate “visual representation” or “composition of place” (in Spanish, “composición de lugar”) by seeing the places “which contributes to a better reinforcement of the knowledge received in the classroom”.

DOUBLE DEGREEMASTER IN IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY + LICENCIATE DEGREE IN SPIRITUAL THEOLOGY.

Those who study for the Master’s Degree in Ignatian Spirituality and who are in possession of the Canonic Bachelor´s Degree in Theology, or who have completed the six-year “sexenio” Philosophy-Theology career path, and who take the entrance exam, will be able to request the validation of 42 ECTS credits for the Licenciate Degree in Spiritual Theology. By following this path, two degrees may be obtained in a period of two years.

DEGREEMASTER IN IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY.

Private Degree granted by the Universidad Pontificia de Comillas.

REASONS TO STUDY THIS PROGRAM AT COMILLAS

This program offers an interdisciplinary approach that harmoniously treats History, Anthropology, Theology and Spirituality as complementary perspectives for an integral understanding of Ignatian charism.

It provides an opportunity to read directly the main documents which are the sources of Ignatian thought and to reflect on them in order to continue learning in our days.

It is a meeting point with a team of professors, recognized experts in “Ignatian Spirituality”, that will help the student to delve into the most essential aspects of our identity.

It utilizes an active and participatory method that combines personal interviews, group work, professorial teaching, reading and commenting on texts, with periodic evaluations to promote the best possible learning.

This Master’s Program offers a systematic and rigorous “pilgrimage” through the main constitutive elements of the charism given to Ignatius of Loyola and his companions, as well as along the road of the fruitful spiritual tradition that sprang forth from his experience and which continues to the present time.

METHODOLOGY

Lectures are combined with individual study, small groups’ work, student presentations in class, practical case workshops, oral and written exams, as well as work outside of class which is handed in to the professor.

Theory presented in class is combined with practical cases and direct work with the trainers. We seek to offer not only theoretical knowledge, but also students are encouraged to pay direct attention to people in search of spiritual guidance or dicernment. This practical work is supervised by teachers, in order to help him/her become an effective aid instrument.

Priests, sisters, religious and lay people who are especially committed, who are currently exercising their profession or who plan to carry out direct work in promotion, training or vocational accompaniment.

This program may also be useful for those who perform tasks as educators of the faith or who accompany personal training processes through spiritual exercises, spiritual direction and the training of pastoral agents.

OBJECTIVES• Prepare individuals capable of integrating in the

formation the spiritual, psychological and pastoral dimensions.

• Provide knowledge on the anthropology of the Christian vocation to better discern and help in the formative accompaniment.

REASONS TO STUDY THIS PROGRAM AT COMILLAS• The Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia

supposes a change in direction in the paradigm of the pastoral care of the family and implies a deep renewal of the models, tools and training of pastoral agents.

• Pope Francis welcomes the fostering and cultivation of the careful training of priests and lay people in the new light of the Exhortation.

• At the center of the renewal are discernment and accompaniment, two issues which are very typical of Ignatian Spirituality and Jesuit universities.

• The synergy of the Faculties of Theology and Canon Law, the University Institute of the Family and the UNINPSI (Psychosocial Intervention Unit) at the Universidad Pontificia Comillas, contributes to the enrichment of the educational training offered by this course.

AIMED AT

Individuals with pastoral experience and those with extensive experience in communities or ecclesiastical centers who already are, or wish to become pastoral agents, and who need training or updating on concepts.

METHODOLOGY

The program requires a part-time presence at the University, and runs from October to June. The face-to-face sessions, which include some in which the good practices of the students of modules I-IV are shared, will be held on Saturdays, in the morning and afternoon, one session every three Saturdays.

The program offers the theoretical study of Ignatian texts and a practical initiation to offer and accompany the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola.


The degree enables the practice of the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola.

The specialist’s educational training facilitates the ability to accompany personal, group or community spiritual processes.

The study plan to obtain this degree in Canon Law is comprised of two cycles:

• The first cycle consists of 4 semesters, which are taught in two academic years. The subjects in this first cycle are taught in the “TUP”, University Theology for Postgraduates (Bachelor’s Degree in Theology taught in the afternoons), on this campus.

Students who are able to justify having completed the courses of this first cycle are exempt from this cycle.

• The second cycle consists of 6 semesters, taught over three academic years. It is aimed at all students who have completed the first cycle or who are exempt from it.

For students who must complete the first cycle, the duration of the postgraduate course (Licenciatus in Iure Canonico) is 5 years. For those who do not have to take the first cycle, the duration will be 3 years.

120 ECTS credits for the first cycle and 180 ECTS credits for the second cycle.

AIMED AT

Individuals who seek to obtain skills and the ability to perform multiple services or tasks entrusted to them by ecclesiastical authorities: the processing of matrimonial causes, the exercise of the positions of judge, defender of the bond, notary, etc., in Ecclesiastical Courts of diverse degrees, consultancy work in the various canonical specialties, assessment to religious institutions, CONFER, the Episcopal Conference, diocesan schools (curias) and organisms of the Holy See; and university teaching.

OBJECTIVES

• Know the CIC of 1983 and the main regulations of the Church.

• Be able to acquire knowledge of other canonical norms and to properly handle the main key points of the area of Church-State relations.

• Acquire an integral scientific educational training in the legal-pastoral care field and in the judicial and administrative canonical praxis.

• Acquire training to respond to the various services that may be entrusted to ecclesiastical authorities.

• Be in command of the theological meaning of Canon Law and its pastoral dimension, as a means for the service of the ecclesiastical community, guided by the Holy Spirit and for the benefit of the Christian life of the faithful and of ecclesiastical communion interpreted in its conciliar conception.

AIMED AT

This specialization is mainly oriented to lawyers and civil solicitors, who intend to practice professionally in Ecclesiastical Courts, as well as to students who are in their third year of studies, or a higher course, of a Degree in Law Faculties. However, individuals with a Bachelor’s Degree, Undergraduate Diploma, or Bachelor’s Degree in Theology who wish to be trained in this area may also be admitted, especially with a view to collaborating in the Ecclesiastical Courts (psychologists, psychiatrists or others interested from related areas).

OBJECTIVES

The studies intend to enable lawyers to act professionally in the Ecclesiastical Courts. As this is a social and professional function in demand, the Faculty of Canon Law attempts to offer rigorous and systematic university-level preparation in this field, helping to train canon lawyers with in-depth knowledge of the subject. This is enhanced with an eminently practical approach to the discipline, which includes the analysis and study of canonical jurisprudence and the carrying out of procedural internships. This degree allows the

individual to be authorized to practice as a lawyer in Ecclesiastical Courts, insofar as it guarantees the necessary expertise in Canon Law, required by the code for the admission of professionals to the list of lawyers of the Ecclesiastical Court.


Exercise of the legal profession and the procuracy in the Ecclesiastical Courts, as well as intervention in the courts as psychologists or psychiatrists (with previous qualification in these professions).
