L ast year, while attending a Montana sporting excursion hosted at the wonderful Gallatin River Lodge I was introduced to the wines and leadership at StoneFly Vineyard, a winery founded

in Napa to pair the traditions of wine making and fly fishing. I found their wines and their mission extremely interesting and inspiring, especially for those of us who strive to tie together individual outdoor pursuits into a complete outdoor and sporting lifestyle.

First a bit about the setting, Bozeman’s Gallatin River Lodge, which could not have been more comfortable. I can attest that no detail was overlooked and there was no shortage of options when it came to sporting pursuits. Over the course of multiple days we caught stunningly beautiful rainbows and brown trout, honed our shooting skills and let wide ranging conversation flow over fine meals prepared by the lodge’s acclaimed chef Craig Seguin. It was a remarkable experience where best-in class accommodations and fishing came together seamlessly with cuisine, wine and the rapport that only seems to develop when outstanding people hunt, fish, eat and drink…together.

During this event, my wine glass saw as much action as my fly rod. I found StoneFly’s wines truly representative of what Napa and Sonoma is known for…delicious, artistically crafted wines from some of the best vineyards in the world. StoneFly’s reds (the Cabernet Sauvignon was

StoneFly Vineyard Exceptional WinesPaired with theFly Fishing Tradition

astounding) and their whites (a delicious Russian River Valley Chardonnay) were very well received.

As true compliment to the wines was the vision of StoneFly’s and the sincere commitment to truly pair fly fishing and outdoor ethos to the tradition of winemaking. Here is a bit of what I learned in my many conversations with Nick at the Gallatin River Lodge and since.

StoneFly has cultivated the status as “official” winery of the Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF), a 40+ year old organization dedicated to advancing the art and science of fly fishing. On the StoneFly label you will find the FFF’s logo, which Nick calls the reel of approval. “What this stands for,” he says, “is our commitment to the tradition of fly fishing the richness of the fly fishing community. The FFF is in many ways the keeper of

Page 10: Open Fences

our tradition and we are grateful for that. Our obligation is to support fly fishing clubs, councils and fundraising events as much as possible.”

But the tradition and sport of fly fishing also relies on healthy fisheries. StoneFly Vineyards has teamed with The Orvis Company on numerous innovative programs, including a conservation program called The StoneFly Prize. Once a year Orvis and StoneFly will evaluate and select one organization to devote a substantial portion of annual sales to the protection of coldwater fisheries in North America.

“It’s not enough,” Nick says “to just plop a great picture of a fly fisher, fish or a bird or what have you on wine label. Many have tried this and it doesn’t work. First you need an outstanding product that speaks for itself. Fortunately we have access to some of the best grapes in the world and an exceptional winemaking team in Marco DiGiulio and Zachary Long. Then, you have to go deeper and strive to make tangible, authentic

connections in the community and environment. Treading lightly on our own properties, respecting the water and energy resources required for winemaking and aligning with causes and organizations which demonstrate results are some of the ways we are working to achieve our vision and earn the wine business of wine and outdoor enthusiasts.”

At Open Fences it is a pleasure to highlight StoneFly Vineyards in our inaugural edition. What this small winery stands for and the unique way they are going about business is admirable and, we feel, deserving of a place in your wine cellar.

T he Vermont Summer Festival Horse Shows run for six weeks through July and August on the Harold Beebe Farm in East Dorset, Vermont. It is a gorgeous time of year—not

too hot and with a sheltering breeze rolling through the Green Mountains—bringing all the clean fresh air that drew artists and respite seekers to the mountains 200 years ago.

The summer season is a festive time of year in New England, with all the hustle and bustle of jam-packed vacation days and the deep rest of gentle summer nights counting fireflies. East Dorset is north on Route 7 (a quintessential summer road-trip road) and is clustered within the impossible-to-name-which-is-favorite group of New England towns identified as the Manchester & The Mountains area of Southern Vermont.

The Harold Beebe Farm is the ideal site for six weeks of horse show competition with top-notch equestrian facilities and a peaceful location in the heart and view of the famed Green Mountains. The farm has five all weather rings, including one of the largest Grand Prix fields in New England, as well as several all weather schooling and riding areas, permanent wash racks, paddocks and extended bridal paths for easy going trail rides.

Next to watching all the gorgeous horses gleaming in the summer sunshine and the ensuing and exhilarating show jump and hunter/jumper competition, one of the best parts of attending the Vermont Summer Festival is the after horse show hours exploration to be accomplished in the idyllic communities of Southwestern Vermont.

Curious to learn local hints and tips for planning a Vermont Summer Festival adventure, Open Fences had the opportunity to catch up with Josiah Allen, the premier equine property real estate agency in the region and source for horse show rentals. Josiah Allen was delighted to offer several excellent suggestions for high points and hot places to stay, eat and visit this summer in Vermont.

First mention goes to the Equinox Inn and Resort, which is an absolutely gorgeous place to stay, made doubly so by a recent and successful renovation. It has two excellent restaurants, an amazing spa with indoor pool and gym, and an assortment of interesting classes, such as falconry school and an off road range rover adventure program.

Perhaps one of the best attractions at the Equinox though, is the outdoor fire pit, which is a divine place to while away an enchanted summer evening. A chocolate and cheese tasting menu is provided, as the fire crackles and the sun sets behind Equinox Mountain.

Across the street is a high-end gun shop and hunting accessories outfitter, and the shopping does not stop there. Manchester and Manchester Village are quite well-known for having expansive and diverse retail opportunities.

A few of the locally owned favorites include the fabulous Northshire Bookstore, which will be featuring a photography show with local favorite, Lisa Cueman, during the horse show. Thebault Design on Depot Street is a favorite with horse show people, for its incredible interiors (very traditional and lovely) that are regularly featured in top design magazines; think “Out of Africa” meets Currier &Ives. A few additional favorite shops are Tilting at Windmills (a great art gallery), The Mountain Goat (everything needed for hiking Vermont) and Comollo Wines and Antiques, which has great wines and antiques (of course).

Next door to the Equinox, The Reluctant Panther is a smaller Boutique hotel, very nicely done with yet another excellent restaurant. High points were given to the Inn at Manchester and Johnny Seesaw’s, located in the small village of Peru. Loaded with character, it is quite rustic, but offers an excellent home cooked meal and is kid friendly. It is popular with the horse show crowd and like many other hotels in the area, offers horse show deals and discounts.

To experience “quintessential” Vermont, Dorset Inn (located in Dorset), may be more to the style of a summer stay this year. Located directly on Main Street of Dorset, the Dorset Inn is everything one expects in a New England Main Street complete with white clapboard edifices and church with stately steeple. In regards to quintessential Vermont, an absolute experience worth having is a trip to Hildene, the Lincoln family home, which is set on 412 gorgeous, preserved acres.

In addition, while the Vermont Summer Festival is taking place, the Dorset Theatre will be in company, providing a night of excellent theatre and a traditional night on the town. The Southern Vermont Art Center is also an incredible resource for the area and is host to numerous events and exhibitions, including the All That Jazz summer concert series.

Page 14: Open Fences

Although several fine dining and excellent taverns have been mentioned, please do stop at Chanticleer, which is just down the road from the festival. It is known for a charming atmosphere and carefully prepared French country cuisine, ideal for discreet gatherings between old friends. On the other end of the spectrum, The Bean is a super fun Mexican restaurant with an energetic

atmosphere, where everyone can go in boots and breeches and feel quite comfortable and have a good laugh.

If day trips are on the agenda, Vermont is well known for its local handcrafted cheeses and two farms not to be missed are Consider Bardwell Farm (appropriately titled), which is the oldest cheese maker in Vermont with an amazing farm stand offering the mouthwatering velvet of various goat cheeses. Just past Johnny Seesaw’s, Taylor Farm, is a working farm with hayrides and kid friendly activities.

The Vermont Summer Festival, in and of itself, is an event not to be missed. The fact it is located in the heart of Vermont, in the bow of the Green Mountains, attendance at the festival increases the opportunity for an unforgettable summer excursion exponentially.

Vermont Summer Festival Show Schedule:Vermont Summer Special, July 7 - 11 Manchester Summer Festival Horse Show, July 14 - 18 Manchester Classic Horse Show, July 21 - 25 Valley Classic Horse Show, July 28 - August 1 Manchester & the Mountains Horse Show, August 4 - 8 Vermont Summer Celebration, August 11 – 15

New Mexico’s legendary, magnificent and iconic ranching empire

San Miguel County, Tucumari, New Mexico. The Bell Ranch is one of the most important – even singular – cattle ranches offered in the

United States today. Encompassing 290,100 deeded acres, it may very well represent the only opportunity to purchase nearly 300,000 acres of land in one stroke for the balance of this century in North America.

The Bell Ranch

The Bell was granted to Pablo Montoya by Mexico in 1824 -nearly656,000 acres of vast, colorful and productive grassland located in the desirable northeastern quadrant of New Mexico. This enormous block of land has successfully supported healthy cattle herds – for 186 years. The signature “bell” brand was registered in 1875.In 1947, the Ranch was split into six huge tracts of land

This break-up made possible the continuance of the extraordinary reputation and historic values which today’s Bell Ranch now enjoys. Through the course of the next two decades and by extraordinary herd improvement and disciplined land management, the core holding of The Bell prospered and came into national prominence. In 1970, William M. Lane, Sr. – a vigorous businessmanfrom Chicago – bought the largest of the six “new” tracts and immediately launched an extraordinary effort to reassemble as much of The Bell as possible. By 1974 he had 290,100 acres back under one fence and one iron -he now officially owned the northern and most desirable part of Don Pablo’s original holding – forty-four percent of the 1824 Grant!

Bill Lane spent lengthy periods of time at The Bell thoroughlyenjoying its remarkable ambience, extraordinary quality of light, unbridled freedom of spirit, and working cattle with his men.Jeff Lane absorbed his father’s enthusiasm for the Ranch andshortly after college graduation in 1974 he brought his bride to this huge empire. Jeff became immersed in developing a “closed” seed-stock herd, which has significantly influenced the quality of The Bell’s large commercial cattle herd. Despite his untimely passing in 2007, the legend of The Bell lives on.

The Bell possesses strong resources for successful entrance or expansion in the cattle business:• 290,100 contiguous deeded acre – no federal or state land;• 14 to 15 inches annual precipitation;• Ideal elevation ranging from 4,300 to 5,600 feet;• Broad spectrum of high-protein cool and warm season grasses

provide year ’round forage – some protein supplement fed in winter but no haying expenses;

• 116 wells & windmills + 90 miles of pipeline + 206 stock tanks;• Superb cattle-handling facilities at 14 locations & good fencing;• Calf weights average 500 pounds;• Comfortable carrying capacity for 5,000 Animal Units. Other important elements comprising this singular land

investment opportunity:• Authentic Headquarters – listed on National Register of Historic

Places in 1974;• Six cow camps each with good homes;• Hacienda – 10,000 sf – 8 bedrooms – classic estancia

architecture;• 8,000’ x 75’ maintained dirt runway – hangar & fuel storage –

partial night lighting. The Bell also offers enjoyable recreational amenities:• 18 miles of Conchas Lake frontage complimented by a

comfortable 2,900 sf guest house for enjoyment of good warm-water fishing and water sports;

• Good antelope and turkey hunting;• Populations of mule deer, Barbary sheep, black bear, cougar,

blue quail and dove with some elk recently appearing;• Endless and unsullied landscapes to explore including Mule

Canyon an awesome six-mile long spring canyon – one of many stunning natural wonders inside this incredible 453 square-

mile kingdom.

Last of the Great Texas Oil Dynasties

A rare opportunity to purchase a part of Texas History, this 50 acre East Texas estate is the original homestead of a 5,000 acre oil dynasty. The Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio shaped the world that surrounds us today. Some of his most influential villas survive in the Veneto region around Venice, Italy.

This Texas landmark was patterned after the villas of Andrea Palladio. Andrea Palladio (1508-1580) remains the most influential architect in the history of architecture.

This masterpiece was handcrafted by Italian artisans imported from Italy by the original owner, oil baron J.C. Judge, in the 1930’s. Lovingly constructed with no regard for cost and completely restored in the late 1980’s to its original glory, this 10,000 sq. ft. mansion sits among park-like grounds with extensive plantings, huge towering trees, and an engineered, stocked lake. There is a lake view guest home, a managers home, pool and pool house, and 2 barns. Offered with some of the original antiques and furnishings. f www.VillaAzzurra.net

by Martha Cargill

It is believed there are approximately one million horses in Texas— a number not exclusive to the greater grasslands, prairies, ranches, hill country and plains of the state—the

counties surrounding Houston, the largest city in the state, are also filled with horse farms.

As the decade opens, Houston is undergoing a resurging interest in equestrian pursuits, and subsequently working to integrate those interests more deeply into the metropolitan community. Venues are being updated, new management is stepping into leadership positions at established horse parks and emphasis is being marketed to draw horse crowds to Houston as the new and improved equestrian hub of the Southwest.

Horses have long been a part of Texas and Texan’s cultural fabric. After the Civil War, when western frontiers were developed the need for cowboys grew with the rise in ranching, cattle driving and range management among other things. Cowboy competitions, roundups and frontier day’s events began as small impromptu tests of equestrian ability and rope prowess and were often the only source of entertainment for miles around.

Eventually these competitions turned into rodeo events, which were recognized as a competitive sport in the 20th Century.

Texas has always had an active rodeo platform well known in bull riding and team roping circuits and Houston is a part of that name; the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is one of the biggest of the big. The industry continues to flourish, and as long as there is rodeo, there will be rodeo in Houston.

In addition to the multi-disciplines of the rodeo and additional ongoing equestrian traditions, a new emphasis marketing equestrian interests in the Houston community is being felt. As urban developments have grown, so to has the

desire to maintain current horse interests while increasing equine appeal to an ever-increasing audience and exhibitor population.

When the Great Southwest Equestrian Center was built in Katy, Texas twenty years ago, it was way outside the metropolitan center. As Houston grew outside of the Loop and past the Sam Houston Parkway, the equestrian center was slowly surrounded by development and began losing ground as the land it was sitting on became increasingly valuable.

Recently, an equestrian who is interested in not only maintaining the center’s operational capacity, but also cultivating its focus to become an established hub of the Southwestern sport horse world, purchased the Center. New ownership is focused on improving existing facilities and has already installed new, world-class footing, with plans for other operational changes and strategic initiatives.

Three major events held are already held at the Center: the renown Pin Oak Charity Horse Show in mid-March, The National Reining Breeders Classic in April and the United States Team Roping Championships. To have this level of equestrian facility amenity in such close proximity to a major metropolitan area would be difficult to duplicate in today’s market—considering the cost of available land in a major metropolitan city, with zoning capacity for an 80 acre horse complex and the accompanying infrastructure—it is safe to say the Great Southwest Equestrian Center is ideally poised to spring board into a new realm of growth and development.

Incidentally, in 1993, the Great Southwest Equestrian Center closed temporarily and a group of determined local horse people got together and formed the Greater Houston Horse Council (GHHC) in its absence. Efforts to save the Great Southwest

Equestrian Center were a success, and today, both the Center and the GHHC are alive and well serving local equestrians of every discipline.

One equestrian discipline taking big steps to meet the challenge of the surging equine market in Houston is Polo. The Houston Polo Club was founded in 1928 and has successfully maintained a popular reputation in the city for close to 100 years. Recent exponential growth in the Houston

Polo community prompted nine sport enthusiasts at the club to begin working with developers at a master planned community currently under construction on the outskirts of Houston in Sugar Land. The community is neighbor to exclusive estates, excellent golf, and fine country clubs and is home to the new Aliana Polo Club, sister club to the Houston Polo Club.

Although both clubs will share certain beneficial relationships, Aliana Polo Club will bring its own identity to the local polo scene. The new world-class facilities will feature two professional polo fields, including one of the only illuminated sunken fields in the world, specially designed to accommodate cooler evening matches. It is an unprecedented move for the polo community and is expected to have a strong impact on the entire Houston equestrian industry when the club plays host to national and international polo events.

Houston’s economy is supported by a full spectrum industrial base and is home to a great number of Fortune 500 headquarters. The city has a thriving visual and performing arts scene and is a vibrant and sophisticated city in which to live, work and play. Horses are an integral part of the Texas landscape, contributing to an active thriving history, and it is exciting to consider the future of the Houston equestrian community as it meets an increasing demand inside the loop.
