OER Summary

This OER is based on Moodle activities that are used for implementing active learning strategies

such as a Flipped Classroom using out of class videos. We have develop a Concept Map for our

course along which the teaching plan for the semester has been developed.

Selection of Subject

For our OER activity we have chosen the subject Industrial Robotics. This subject is being offered

for the students to enhance the concepts behind that.

The subject is interdisciplinary in nature, since it draws upon knowledge from mechanical,

electronics and computer science engineering.

Interdisciplinary subjects often pose problems to instructors since topics involved are from varied

domains. Moreover this subject is hands on course and laboratory sessions require microcontroller

programming and interfacing and use of robot simulation software such as Robot Studio etc.

This course is designed to give the student an in depth understanding of manipulative robotics

and its uses. It covers the following course material.

Automation types, introduction to industrial robotics, end effectors. robot history,

populations and main uses, Profitability of robot usage. Robotics simulation using

Workspace LT. Kinematics of multi-degree-of-freedom systems. Jacobean matrices,

kinematics and dynamics. Robot trajectories. Anatomy of an industrial robot.

Concept Map

A concept map is a diagram that depicts suggested relationships between concepts. It is a

graphical tool used for organizing and representing knowledge. It was developed by Prof Joseph

Novak of Cornell University.

The concept map for our subject Industrial Robotics is given below.

The advantage of using concept map when preparing the teaching plan and content is as follows;

it helped to represent the relationships between various interdisciplinary subjects accurately

it helped to decide the hierarchy of topics

it allowed to mobilize and deploy resources effectively

Instructional Strategies

Various instructional strategies have been chosen for implementing course. The course is

information intensive and the knowledge draws upon several subjects within mechanical and

electronics engineering. Most of the activity covered in moodle and the regular class cover the

levels of Recall, Understand and Apply and Analyze of Blooms Taxonomy. One final assignment is

meant to cover the final levels of Evaluate and Create of Blooms Taxonomy. These are as follows

1) Traditional chalk and talk with blackboard

2) Flipped Classroom with TPS & PI

3) Other Moodle Based Activities

Evaluation Strategies

1) Formative – Quiz, Assignments These assessment techniques are mainly to assess students understanding at recall and

understand level. 2) Summative – Numerical Problems, Oral exams, Seminar, Mini Project

These assessment techniques are to assess students learning at apply, analyse and

create levels

2. Tool Exploration and Implementation

For implementing the curriculum a LMS was required and we decided to go with moodle since it is

the most flexible and versatile of all the platforms. Moreover moodle is open source and is available

free of cost.

The server installation and course creation in moodle was a time consuming task and it took the

team a total of 10 hours to create the course in moodle.

4. Evaluating Effectives of OER

To measure the impact of moodle based learning on student’s engagement we created a 5 point

Likerts’s scale survey questionnaire. The survey was administered to the 30 participating students.

There were five questions having target statements as follows:

a) Q1: Did activity help me achieve greater understanding of the concerned topic.

b) Q2: Moodle activity helped me communicate with my colleagues better.

c) Q3: Moodle activity improved by ability to solve problems independently.

d) Q4: Moodle activity improved by ability to work in a team.

e) Q5: Moodle helped me improve my examination scores.

The results of the survey revealed almost all students had a very favorable experience. 95% of the

students strongly agreed that the activity resulted in increasing their knowledge about the topics

discussed over the two weeks. A vast majority of the students said that they activity resulted in

improving their communication and team skills. Only 4 students said that they would not

recommend this activity to others and that they were comfortable with the traditional way.

Overall it can be concluded that there was high student engagement but it is too early to draw

conclusions since it is the beginning of the semester and the findings are for the first two weeks of

the course. Also, the effectiveness on final examination scores can only be determined at the end

of the semester.
