FROM OUR MINISTER

Dear friends, By the time you read this article we shall have celebrated Pentecost, about which I spoke in the May issue of “The Open Door”, and which has been a time to consider again being baptised or filled with the Holy Spirit. One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is healing and on 16

th June

there will be an opportunity, as part of the service, to ask for prayers for healing. I hope to be joined by some of the elders in laying hands on those who wish it and praying for healing, as is encouraged in the Bible (see for instance James 5:14). God offers healing to us in all sorts of ways and he uses different people to bring that. He can act directly to bring physical healing, he can bring comfort and emotional healing, he can bring reassurance and, in some situations death itself can also be healing. People call it “the ultimate healing” which is surely true when as Christians we believe in eternal life. God uses people in the church to bring healing through their prayers, he uses doctors, nurses and other health professionals to bring healing through their skill and expertise. I encourage you, if you are struggling with an illness, a condition or a situation which needs healing, to take the opportunity of accepting healing prayer at our service. Further opportunities will then follow, probably on roughly a quarterly basis. In addition we now have the Prayer Chain, for those times when you wish to request urgent prayer for yourself or someone known to you. There should be details about this elsewhere in the magazine. Another gift of the Holy Spirit is as an evangelist and once again in our Synod we have the opportunity to hear Rev. Paul

Stokes (minister of Plymstock URC, Plymouth and a GEAR Evangelism and Renewal Advocate) speak to us from his experience. He will be at the Beacon Church, Canford Heath on Saturday 8

th June for a day conference entitled

“Evangelism: Growing Confidence in the Gospel”. Evangelism is something for which there is a special gifting but it is also something that all of us, as Christians, are called to share in. As Dr. D.T. Niles said, “Evangelism is one beggar telling another beggar where to find bread”. If you have found the Bread of Life, as Jesus described himself, why would you keep that to yourself? Or, to quote Archbishop William Temple, “The church is the only society that exists for the benefit of those who are not its members”. So do try and go along to this day conference to be encouraged and challenged about how we can reach out to our families, friends and community. Speak to me if you are interested as I should be able to offer lifts. There is more information on the poster in the church foyer. There are many other ways to receive from God through the life of the church but I particularly want to emphasise the fortnightly Bible Study group. We are just about to begin looking together at the Lord’s Prayer and it would be very good to have more people join us. Finally, you have been listening to my sermons for 18 months now and in that time we have looked at who Jesus is (in the “I am” sayings from John’s gospel), what the church is (in the letters to the seven churches from Revelation) and we are drawing to the end of the current series about who and what we are from Paul’s letters to the Ephesians. If there are particular passages or topics that you would like me to tackle please let me know and I will include them in my consideration of sermon series for the future.

Your friend and minister, Chris

SECRETARY'S NOTES JUNE 2013 We are approaching the annual Elders' Election (at July Church Meeting) so it might be useful to consider the role of an Elder. The Manual tells us that they share with the Minister in the pastoral oversight and leadership of the Church. What do our people think the Elders' role is, I wondered? So I dug out a questionnaire we had at Church Meeting many years ago and invite you to have a go at filling it in. Put a * against 5 'qualities' which you regard as most important. Put a x against the least important in choosing an Elder. • • Able to conduct services occasionally. • Handy with a screw driver. • Interested in political and social concerns. • Commitment to Christ. • A good organiser. • Knowledge of the Bible. • A male. • Able to resolve conflicts. • Well educated. • Having a living relationship with God. • Knowledge of finance. • Able to get alongside young people. • Able to pray with others. • Caring and sympathetic. • At least 20 years old. • A good leader. • Love for the traditions of the Church. • A good listener.

5

Page 6: Open Door - June 2013

• Able to work in a team. • Has a sense of humour. I'd be interested to know your conclusions.

BASICS BANK Exciting news!! Tony Miles ran the London Marathon, on 21st April, in 4 hours and 40 minutes. Amazing! He raised an incredible amount for the Basics Bank of over £900 (and still counting). We are extremely proud of Tony and very grateful to him for all his efforts!!! Well done, Sir!!

There has been an increase in the number of parcels ordered, no doubt due to the changes in benefits. We sent out 75 parcels in April, to help 145 people. This compares to 53 in April 2012 to help 125 people. We continue to be grateful for your support. We would be especially grateful for donations of small tins of meat, peas, carrots, fruit, rice pudding, custard and cartons of long life milk. Our Harvest and Christmas supplies of these have well and truly gone.

Thank you

THANK YOU I would like to say a huge thank you to all of you who sponsored me and supported me with your prayers in the run up to the London Marathon this year. As you may be aware, unfortunately I was unable to run this year due to a late foot injury. However my place has been deferred and all money donated has been passed to Mind for their work this year. It will count towards my overall sponsorship amount when I run next year. Thank you again for all prayers and sponsorship, your support has been very important to me.

UNITED REFORMED CHURCH OFFERS A HELPING HAND TO THE LYMINGTON CARE GROUP Lymington Care Group contacted a number of organisations in the i r p lea fo r he lp fo r a l te rnat ive o f f i ce accommodationPPPPP.well, they contacted the Lymington URC just at the right time as the church had new meeting rooms available! After viewing, discussing and visiting the URC, the Lymington Care Group started their 10am to 1pm telephone support service at the church on Tuesday 26th March 2013 on a Monday to Friday basis (excluding bank holidays). Rev Chris Vivian said"Lymington URC is delighted to be able to help such an important community group as the Lymington Care Group. It reinforces our aim as a church to be an Open Door to the community and for our buildings to be used to benefit all.” The care group is a voluntary organisation whose helpers drive people from the Lymington/Pennington area to medical appointments, such as GPs, dentists, chiropodists, and to any hospital the client needs to go to. They also arrange for elderly people to visit relatives and friends in nursing homes and hospital. The group commented “going to hospital can be a frightening experience and Lymington Care Group feel that by staying with the client it takes some of the anxiety away.” At present they have 35 volunteer drivers, and although that may sound a lot, because of holidays and other commitments it is sometimes very difficult to accommodate all the requests they receive!! Lymington Care Group are always looking for volunteers and if you have a few hours to spare weekly, monthly or just occasionally, they would be pleased to hear from you. The care group office telephone number is 01590 679187.

PRAYER CHAIN Thank you to all those in our congregation who have responded to the call to be involved with the Prayer Chain. There are now 13 links in place which will be able provide effective communication of an urgent prayer need from when it is first received and passed onto myself. I will then telephone the next person in the chain, they will do so with the next in line and so on until the final person receives the message and then contacts me to indicate the prayer chain is complete. While the knowledge of some of the situations and people prayed for may be widely known, some may need confidentiality and members of the prayer chain will not talk about it except in the context of passing the information to another in the chain. So I hope people will feel comfortable in using this type of prayer ministry for those sudden, emergency situations they become aware of, knowing God freely invites us to bring our needs to him so that we can receive his strength and peace. May the Lord bless all we do.

A SPRING TIME TREAT

Late in the afternoon of a lovely spring day,

I am just back from my walking around.

It is so pleasant, a shame to go indoors

So I’m sitting in the sun, a chair was easily found.

The blackthorn is out, white on the hedges,

The catkins are lazily dangling.

The brook is busily bubbling along its way,

Over the stones it is jangling.

In the distance can be heard the sound

Of a motor mower and a strimmer.

I have my Polaroid’s over my glasses

Helping the sun in my eyes to be dimmer.

A robin is perched on the sun lounge roof

Singing his heart away.

He seems to want to let us all know

How much he is enjoying the day.

There are masses of buds on the magnolias,

Each trying to burst itself free.

One or two more days like this one,

It will be a beautiful sight to see.

I’ve just looked at my watch,

Been here three-quarters of an hour you see.

One thing I haven’t found on this lovely spring day

Is a kind fairy to make me a cup of tea!

A poem of Arthur Stevens, first published in the April 2003 URC maga-zine
