A Message from your Council Chairperson Mrs Karen Ramsay Welcome to Caralee Cares 2017. As Chairperson of the school council I would like to congratulate Mr Jason Shapcott who was announced the successful applicant for Principal for Caralee Community School earlier this year. Jason had been acting principal for 18 months since the retirement of Mr Trevor Anderson and has proven to be the most valuable person to lead Caralee into the future. His knowledge and insight into the School and the children showed that he has the vision for leadership that the school and community needs. I have been involved with the school now for 10 years and have enjoyed watching the school grow and develop, giving the children of Willagee a great learning experience where they are encouraged in a safe and happy environment with our vision of “Success for All”. I love to see the amazing teachers and admin staff provide the children with the confidence and encouragement to be the best they can be! I hope you enjoy reading about what Caralee Community School has been doing this year and share in our many achievements. If you want to know any more about this wonderful school, please feel free to call the office and make an appointment for a tour or come along to our Open Day!

CHOIR – Rhiannon Longley

2017 saw the Caralee Community School Choir perform at the Singfest Masse Choir Day and the Crown Theatre in the annual WA Government Music Schools Society Concert. At the Crown Theatre the students sang and danced with enthusiasm and charm. The costumes were sensational and the prop of a giant IPhone added to the presentation. It is a huge achievement for the choir to have performed so confidently in front of an audience of thousands. This was just two of many opportunities for students to participate in an array of forms within the performing arts curriculum. If you missed these performances, the choir will be performing again in term four at the Lions Club Annual Christmas Carols.

GUITAR PROGRAM – Darron Acott

Caralee has been able to run an after-school guitar program for a number of students who have demonstrated an interest and aptitude for learning a musical instrument.

gong at the AFL School Ambassador Awards night. Term three saw CCS amalgamate with FLDC for the annual joint school athletics carnival, which, despite inclement weather was a resounding success. The results were incredibly close with Red winning the overall shield and Blue winning the Geoff Bailey shield. Caralee had two netball teams playing in the Fremantle netball Association. The “A” team did exceptionally well and were declared grand final winners in their division for 2017. Well done to Caralee C.S.

The students stay after school on a Monday afternoon and learn and play together as an ensemble. The teacher, Mr Darron Acott worked for the School of instrumental Music, now known as Instrumental Music Services School for ten years before becoming a Deputy Principal in 2015. The group will be performing at the school fete this year and at the musical showcase assembly in term four. We are aiming to perform a lot more in 2018.

SPORT – Aleisha Craen

2017 – It began in term one with the girls multi-sport and summer lightning carnivals. These events proved to be highly successful with the Caralee teams winning AFL. Netball, Rugby and finishing as Regional finalists in the Girls cricket. As Regional finalists three teams are entered to compete for regional glory in term four. Term two involved the round robin competition for the Eagles cup and the Fever cup. This was highly contested and very close with Caralee CS teams achieving runner up status in soccer and netball. Mrs Craen (nee Cotton) also introduced the CCS girls to football with amazing results. These girls were named as champions in the Fast Ball skills competition and were then invited to play in two curtain raisers for the Dockers and were also invited to play Auskick during one of the AFLW games. The success of this dedication saw Mrs Craen nominated and then declared the winner of the “Outstanding Female AFL program

YEAR 6 It is almost that time of the year again when we bid a fond farewell to the Caralee Class of 2017. This year we are extremely proud to announce that a large number of our year six students have achieved success by being accepted into specialist programs at a range of high schools as well as entry into some prestigious private schools. Melville SHS will be welcoming Jolina Bishop and Avaree Garrett into the Netball program. Bianca Lindley has been successful in being accepted into both the netball and music program at Melville SHS. Congratulations also go to Jamie McMullan and Caden Mancini for securing a place in the Academic Extension programme at Melville SHS. John Curtin School of Arts will have the privilege of working with Cosmo Quatermaine who has been accepted into the Arts program in 2018. Alice Wright has gained admission into Rossmoyne SHS. South Fremantle will welcome Hailey Headland into the football program; she will be joined there by Joshua Scammell. Ava Braden joins the Applecross SHS community; Emy-Lee Fitzgerald joins Lakelands SHS as does Jet Cable. Kaylen Caruana, Danielle Crowe, Greta Donohue and Lila Ryan all were successful in their application to Seaton College.

Caralee CS are very proud of all the year six students of 2017 and would like to take this opportunity to wish them every success in 2019 and beyond.

CURRICULUM 2017 is the second year that the school has embraced the ‘Stepping Stones’ numeracy program. This program commences in Kindergarten and as the name suggests steps up and builds on previous knowledge through to year 6. As a whole school program students are exposed to and become familiar with mathematical language. It also allows teachers to differentiate to meet the needs of individual students. Guided Reading continues to be a focus at Caralee CS with students investigating many different aspects to comprehension. This year also saw a focus on Writing with several strategies being implemented to assist students and teachers to evaluate and refine pedagogical strategies. Students in Pre Primary participate in the on-line entry at the start of the school year. Data gained from this assessment allows teachers to identify specific student needs. These students are then immersed in activities relevant and specific to their needs.

LIBRARY COLLABORATION This year Willagee Library has been fortunate to have funding for an after-school youth drop-in program 4 afternoons a week. On Mondays and Thursdays the program starts after Homework Help finishes at 4pm and on Tuesdays and Fridays straight after school finishes. The program is aimed at youth aged 9 to 16 years of age and each day has a different activity. So far we’ve had a ten week photography workshop culminating in an exhibition at the library and

NAIDOC event at the community centre, board-gaming, digital animation and movie reviewing. We’re now planning for term 4 2017 and term 1 2018 based on feedback from the participants, and are really pleased that they are now driving the direction of the program. Most of the participants are current Caralee students and former students now at Melville High School. Several of them have been attending Homework Help sessions since they started in 2013. It has been a privilege for the library staff to watch these students grow into leadership roles in the youth program becoming role models for younger children. We get so many positive comments from other library patrons on the program and together with the Willagee Community Centre we’re proud to be involved in supporting future leaders in our community.
