Refugee Week takes place annually across the world around World Refugee Day on 20 June. In Britain, Refugee Week is a nationwide programme of cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to society and encourages a better understanding between communities.

London South Bank University is a civic university at the centre of social life in South London. In line with its civic mission and commitment to social justice, it is opening its doors to refugees (and their families, friends, and supporters) on Saturday 24 June 2017.

Refugees, we know that you bring valuable skills and experiences to host communities but that these are often under-valued or not recognized. Our Open Day provides you with an opportunity to share your skills and learn new ones as you meet new people and build friendships and contacts. You and your children will also have the opportunity to use the university’s facilities for relaxing and fun activities.

As we celebrate the rich diversity of the communities outside the university, we also want you to discover what LSBU has to offer you!

The Open Day will include:

• Welcome to London South Bank University

• Talks and taster classes – Urban agriculture, Network for Refugees and more

• Storytelling and craft making for families and children (who must be accompanied)

• Sports activities – table tennis, hand ball and more

• Workshops - how to run a campaign (led by Citizens UK)

• Human library – share your ideas and experiences with others

• World Cafe skills swap – join the conversations about Women in Science, Migrant entrepreneurship, PROMISE Refugee Youth Project, International Relations, Sustainable Design

Lunch and refreshments will be provided

This event is part of the #PROMISE Refugee Project which challenges prejudice towards refugees and promotes understanding and support from host communities. It promotes awareness of the importance of the 1951 UN Refugee Convention and understanding of refugee protection in Europe. Funded with support from the European Commission, the project brings together research institutions, local authorities, youth orqanizations and NGOs from 6 European countries.

There is no need to book but please register on What’s On to allow us to plan the activities
