A Legacy of CaringFor 50 years, Saint Luke’s Foundation donors have been a steady source of support to hospitals, clinics and programs within Saint Luke’s Health System

Giving mattersFounded in 1963, the Foundation supports Saint Luke’s hospitals and programs throughout the Greater

Kansas City area, including Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City, Saint Luke’s East Hospital, Saint Luke’s North Hospital campuses, Saint Luke’s South Hospital, Saint Luke’s College of Health Sciences, Crittenton Children’s Center, The Children’s SPOT, Midwest Ear Institute, and Saint Luke’s Hospice.

In 2012, transfers of $18.7 million supported medical and nursing education, research, community services, and a variety of medical programs. Following are some of the outcomes produced by charitable gifts in 2012 and 2013.

Community caringSaint Luke’s Health System helps provide charity care

and outreach through a variety of ways—from medication assistance programs to community service clinics.

A $1.275 million grant was awarded by the McWilliams Memorial Hospital Trust, Bank of America, trustee, to support charity care and community service programs. These included assistance for uninsured patients following discharge, such as medications and home infusion, transportation, medical supplies and equipment, and wound care.

Funds also supported innovative community partnerships with the Kansas City CARE Clinic (formerly Kansas City Free Health Clinic), Rose Brooks Bridge Program, a licensed grief counselor in Women’s Health, and a partnership with Legal Aid of Western Missouri to deal with issues that impact patient well-being, such as gaining health coverage, housing counseling, patient safety in the home, and other legal issues that affect recovery and health.

Providing a smart startThanks to community support, Crittenton

Children’s Center served more than 4,400 children struggling with emotional trauma and mental illness in 2012, an increase of more than 20 percent over the previous two years. Philanthropic gifts enabled the development of numerous programs and opportunities for these children that would otherwise not exist, including nutrition and fitness programming, horticulture therapy, career counseling, and neurological programs to advance memory, attention, and processing abilities.

Support for SouthThe new Saint Luke’s South Hospital Jacobson

& McElliott Diabetes and Endocrinology Center opened in 2012, supported with more than $750,000 in generous donor gifts, including proceeds from the annual Books & Boutiques fundraising event in 2012. The 2013 event supported oncology services at Saint Luke’s South Hospital, including the STAR (Survivorship, Training, and Rehabilitation) cancer survivorship program. Saint Luke’s South Hospital welcomed Jani L. Johnson as its new president and CEO in September 2012. Johnson began her career in 1985 as a staff nurse at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute.

Hope for children with disabilitiesThanks to its Once Upon a Time fundraiser,

individual contributions, and support from the SPOT Auxiliary, The Children’s SPOT served 615 children with disabilities and developmental delays—67 of whom received financial assistance—with more than 9,000 speech, physical, and occupational therapy visits. Charitable support also enabled two staff members to obtain certification in a specialized feeding program and allowed the integration of iPad technology into daily therapy plans.

Now hear thisThanks to charitable contributions, Saint Luke’s

Midwest Ear Institute provided nearly 200 free screenings to the community in 2012. The Ear Institute also received gifts to help create a future center for pediatric hearing, including a Hall Family Foundation grant of nearly $300,000.

A boost for breast healthIn 2012, the Center for Women’s Care at Saint

Luke’s North Hospital provided nearly 150 free mammograms for uninsured women in the area, thanks to charitable gifts from the community and a partnership with the Platte and Clay County Health Departments, which helped establish the program. More recently, support from fundraising events and generous donors enabled the Center for Women’s Care to add 3D Mammography to its list of services, to help to detect breast cancers sooner and more accurately.

Care for cancer patients at EastIn 2012, the annual Boo Ball fundraising event

netted more than $140,000 to benefit the Saint Luke’s East Hospital Appearance Renewal Center, which opened in 2013. The center is a welcoming “boutique” that provides cancer patients with specially designed products and resources to pamper them and ease their journey through treatment to recovery. The Appearance Renewal Center is housed in the new medical pavilion at Saint Luke’s East Hospital, part of a campus plan to expand services and increase beds from 141 to 171.

Innovation and EducationReflecting its original charter, Saint Luke’s Foundation provides substantial support to medical education and residency programs, a college of nursing, continuing education for staff nurses, and a variety of other education and research programs

Research catalystEducation, research, and innovation have always been a vital part of Saint Luke’s Health System’s

culture. The quality and quantity of clinical research makes Saint Luke’s a unique place to practice and helps to attract top-flight clinicians. Access to new technology and therapies through clinical research elevates our clinicians’ medical practice and makes vital contributions to patient outcomes.

In 2012, Saint Luke’s research productivity touched the lives of more than 9,200 patients who were enrolled in 430 clinical studies. Support for research came from Saint Luke’s Foundation donors, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the American Heart Association, and pharmaceutical and medical device companies.

Research “Top 10”Three clinical studies featuring cardiac research

conducted at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute made the American Heart Association’s Top 10 list of scientific advances in heart disease and stroke for 2012. The first of these advances was a study examining the relationship between duration of CPR and the likelihood of survival from cardiac arrest. The second was the FREEDOM trial, a NIH-funded study investigating the optimal treatment of patients with diabetes and coronary artery disease. And the third advance was the development of catheter-based approaches for renal artery denervation that are currently under investigation as part of the SYMPLICITY-HTN III trial.

Beating heart diseaseThe robust research activity at Saint Luke’s Mid

America Heart Institute in 2012 touched the lives of 1,1,76 patients who were enrolled in 77 active clinical studies. This research spans all subspecialties of cardiovascular medicine—from interventional techniques to heart transplant, and from imaging to prevention. Doctors also learn from experience. The Heart Institute has an entire research program devoted to “outcomes research,” which helps to determine the most effective ways to treat heart disease and improve patient outcomes and quality of life.

In August 2013, Saint Luke’s heart transplant program performed its 600th heart transplant. Only 21 programs in the U.S. have performed more adult heart transplants. Saint Luke’s offers the only adult heart transplant program in Kansas City and it’s program ranks among the top 10 for number of adult transplants nationwide.

New accolades for stroke program Saint Luke’s Stroke program was awarded the

distinction of being named the first Stroke Solution Site by GE Medical’s Healthymagination initiative that is committed to improving world health. Rigorous data analysis by Oxford Analytica looking at access and outcomes resulted in the validation. The results were presented at the Global Stroke Forum, held in New York in June 2012, and were published in the journal Stroke.

Hope for cancer patientsSaint Luke’s Cancer Institute (SLCI) offers

patients an opportunity to participate in a broad range of clinical studies. These include National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cooperative Research Group trials, pharmaceutical industry-sponsored research, and investigator-initiated trials. Saint Luke’s is also a leading member in the Kansas City Clinical Oncology Program, through which NCI-sponsored national clinical trials are available locally for patients with many types of cancer.

Having broad access to clinical studies gives Saint Luke’s patients and their physicians more options to treat commonly diagnosed cancers such as breast, lung, and leukemia and lymphoma. SLCI partners with major pharmaceutical and biotech companies and prominent academic and medical research entities to advance treatment discoveries for many types of cancer. During 2012, SLCI was a contracted clinical site for 20 industry-sponsored trials, and continuously evaluates new trials to open at our Saint Luke’s campuses.

Banking on cord bloodSince 2008, women who give birth at Saint

Luke’s hospitals in the Kansas City metro area can donate blood from their infants’ umbilical cords for use in treatments for leukemia, sickle cell anemia, and dozens of other diseases and disorders. By offering the service, Saint Luke’s is helping to increase the world’s supply of cryopreserved umbilical-cord blood units, which are rich in stem cells useful in the treatment of many conditions.

Donated cord blood cells are collected, then tested and processed in Saint Luke’s Hospital’s stem cell processing laboratory. Next, the cord blood is shipped for storage to the St. Louis Cord Blood Bank based at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, one of about 24 accredited public facilities across the nation that stores umbilical cord blood for clinical and basic research in the field of stem cell transplantation.

In 2012, the Saint Luke’s Cord Blood Program collected 2,200 units at its four Kansas City metro hospitals. More than 6,300 units have been collected since the program’s inception.

Expertise in liver diseaseThe Hepatology and Liver Transplant team

was active in recruiting patients for clinical studies in 2012. Two hepatitis C virus studies are analyzing elements of patient care to improve outcomes for future patients.

Saint Luke’s physicians are also studying the increased risk of Coronary Artery Disease in Patients with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. Nearly 400 patients have been enrolled in this cross-sectional analysis, which has demonstrated that the presence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is a stronger predictor of coronary artery disease than the traditional Framingham factors typically used in risk factor analysis.

Preparing tomorrow’s nursesIt’s not just patients who come to Saint Luke’s

to get better; Saint Luke’s Hospital’s role as a teaching hospital encompasses its medical education and residency programs, a college of nursing, continuing education for staff nurses, and other educational programs.

In 2012, as Saint Luke’s College of Health Sciences settled into its new Education and Simulation Center near Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City, it expanded its bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) enrollment from 120 to 250 and added a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program. Thanks to generous donors, 100 nursing students received scholarships and grants totaling $162,000.

In addition, 193 Saint Luke’s nurses and clinical staff received clinical excellence awards, educational travel grants, and funding for certifications totaling $157,362.

Training medical professionalsSaint Luke’s Hospital is a tertiary referral

center offering health care in more than 60 medical specialties, enhanced by medical education and research. This emphasis gives doctors-in-training access to the latest clinical research, technology, and instruction by physicians who are leaders in their fields. Through affiliation with the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine, Saint Luke’s offers 12 residency programs and 20 fellowships, eight of which are funded through the Foundation. Education programs are also offered in pharmacy, laboratory science, radiology, and sonography.

In 2012, the Foundation provided $454,871 to Saint Luke’s Hospital in support of endowed chair positions, which facilitate medical education and research at the hospital and instruct medical students and residents. An additional $344,871 in matching funds was contributed by the Missouri Endowed Chair program.

Saint Luke’s Department of Medical Education received $292,500 in support of resident training, Saint Luke’s Health Sciences Library, and clinical research projects by residents.

A FIRM FOUNDATION: 50 YEARS OF SAINT LUKE’S FOUNDATION

A Firm FoundationFounded in 1882 through charitable “subscriptions,” the history of Saint Luke’s Health System has been intertwined with acts of generosity. In the early years, Dr. Herman Pearse mortgaged his own home to buy a building for Saint Luke’s Hospital. In the early 1900s, A. W. Peet, a local philanthropist and businessman, headed a building campaign for Saint Luke’s Hospital’s present location. When revenues fell during the Depression, occasionally Mr. Peet would write a check from his personal funds to cover expenses. In the decades to follow, many more generous donors would come forward to help advance Saint Luke’s healing mission.

Presence of Care SocietySaint Luke’s Foundation is blessed with many gifts from donors who care about enhancing the quality of patient care at Saint Luke’s Hospital. However, almost all of these gifts are designated or restricted for specific uses. Each year, more than $1 million is required to support programs and activities not subsidized by restricted or designated funds. This is why the Presence of Care Society was launched to secure and sustain programs that would not otherwise receive support. In 2012, a total of $352,049 was received from 405 individual members, estates, and trusts.
