Open Access Launches
Wiley launched our first gold Open Access journals in 2011, and since then
our program has grown to 121 Gold OA titles (and counting)
Before launching any new OA
title, careful market analysis
is undertaken to ensure that
each new journal fills a gap
within the subject community
and has its own unique aims
and scopes. Our new journal
launches cover a wide variety
of subjects and disciplines, both in partnership with societies as well as our own proprietary
titles. Each OA title added to the Wiley portfolio cements our commitment to the requirements
of authors and researchers who want to be able to easily and freely access the latest research
articles.
Wiley’s new OA journals cater to a wide variety of researchers needs, with titles that publish
research on a sound science value and ethos, such as Ecology and Evolution, through to cutting
edge research, as shown with our new high impact titles such as Neuroscience Next.

Transitioning Journals to OA
Since 2012 we have successfully transitioned 25 titles to Open Access. We have more planned for 2020 and the
years to follow, subject to the same market analysis as our new OA launches. Before
transitioning a title to a fully Gold OA model, there are a number of considerations we
take into account, such as:
• Subject discipline: is the subject community receptive to a transition to Open Access?
• Availability of funding: is there funding to cover Articles Processing Charges (APCs)?
• Geographical distribution of authors: are the majority of authors from countries
with established gold OA activity or covered by Research4Life initiative?
• Journal type: does the journal publish many article types that are not suited to an APC
model (such as reviews titles)?
• Finances: with all these considerations above, does the modelling show a sustainable
revenue stream for the journal and our partners?
We have seen increases in Impact Factor in all journals that we have flipped across varying subject disciplines*
What about the Impact Factor?
What happens when a journal ‘Flips’ to OA?
We have seen usage (full text downloads) increase significantly during the year of the transition to Open Access and this trend continues after the transition year. On average, usage more than doubles in the transition year*

Transitioning the Market
Transitioning individual journals to Open Access allows us to meet the Open Access
needs of specific subject and author communities. However, Wiley is also committed to delivering Open Access options on a larger scale via the negotiation of country-level agreements. These
agreements allow authors to choose the OA publishing option in any of our Hybrid journals with no
charge to the author – APCs are covered by the agreement. In addition, several of these agreements also
make provision for publishing in any of our 100+ Gold Open Access titles.
The table below summarizes the agreements currently in place and the options available for authors:

Breaking News: First open access agreements in the US. Although not national level agreements, we recently announced two new agreements with library consortia in Virginia and Ohio in to enable their researchers to publish Open Access.
Looking to the Future: More and more countries are keen to deliver 100% open access to their research output. We are committed to negotiating agreements that deliver transitions in a way that maintains a sustainable business for the journals that we publish.
