Transitioning Journals to OA

Since 2012 we have successfully transitioned 25 titles to Open Access. We have more planned for 2020 and the

years to follow, subject to the same market analysis as our new OA launches. Before

transitioning a title to a fully Gold OA model, there are a number of considerations we

take into account, such as:

• Subject discipline: is the subject community receptive to a transition to Open Access?

• Availability of funding: is there funding to cover Articles Processing Charges (APCs)?

• Geographical distribution of authors: are the majority of authors from countries

with established gold OA activity or covered by Research4Life initiative?

• Journal type: does the journal publish many article types that are not suited to an APC

model (such as reviews titles)?

• Finances: with all these considerations above, does the modelling show a sustainable

revenue stream for the journal and our partners?

We have seen increases in Impact Factor in all journals that we have flipped across varying subject disciplines*

What about the Impact Factor?
