STUDY GUIDE: A study guide presents lessons step-by-step so they are easy
and fun to learn. Students track their progress by putting their initials and the
date next to each step after it is completed.
STUDENT PURPOSE: Ensure students know the value of research and creative
writing before they are asked to do the assignments.
RECOMMENDATION: It is highly recommended that students have done the
Effective Education How to Use a Dictionary, course before starting the
“Research and Creative Writing” study guide.
MISUNDERSTOOD WORDS: Make sure your students know the meaning of
every word that is used in each assignment and in the research material they
use.
GRAMMAR AND SPELLING SKILLS: Coach students to apply the grammar
skills they have already studied or those grammar points being learned newly.
Give lots of validation when they apply grammar basics in their creative writing.
When there is an error, take up only one thing at a time. Drill any misspelled
words in separate spelling lessons. It is best to review grammar and spelling
basics in lessons separate from creative writing.
WHY SEPARATE GRAMMAR & SPELLING LESSONS? Developing the habit of
noting errors students make in creative writing and then taking those errors up,
one at a time, in separate grammar or spelling lessons is a way to keep students
attention on creative ideas rather than on errors. If a student wants to work on
grammar, spelling and creative writing in combination, however, that is perfectly
fine, but when it is not the case keep the lessons separate.
WRITING FOR AN AUDIENCE: Of course you will want to help your student edit
his or her writing if it is going to be published or presented to an audience.
