Trials, Bicycle trials is one of the fastest growing cycle sports in the UK. This fun sport stems from motorcycle trials and started over 20 years ago.

Two styles have evolved over time which can be broadly classed as street or competition.

Competition is its original format where the rider would have to navigate their way through a defined course of natural or artificial rough terrain, without putting their feet down to balance.

Over the years street style has developed and now you will be more likely to see a Trials bike hopping on anything from curbs to telephone boxes in your local town.

Many people ask, why do the bikes have no seats? Quite simply because they are surplus. The gear ratio on these bikes is so low that you would seldom use them for longer journeys. To save weight over the years the saddle has been discarded and only 24” models have them as a perch for the rider to sit on whilst recovering from previous exertion.

Although Trials riding is a discipline on its own, gaining proficiency in it has many spin-os for other branches of cycle sport. The great balance which it teaches, stands you in good stead for a tricky tech. section on an XC course or just being able to track stand at trac lights on your commuter bike.

Trials riding is also superb for overall fitness, working both the upper body and legs. You will find its a fun 30 min work-out in your back garden.

You do not need a BMX park / BMX Trails / Woods / Single Track or any other specialist cycling venue. You see a park bench, the Trials rider sees an obstacle and when you see an obstacle, the Trials rider sees a challenge.
