1. Onychomycosis is also called Tinea unguium.
2. Onychomycosis is a fungal nail infection.
3. Onychomycosis can affect the nail bed, matrix and plates of all nails.
4. Onychomycosis affects the toenails more commonly than the fingernails.
5. Distal subungal onychomycosis (DSO) is the most common type of nail fungus infection.
6. DSO is usually caused by Trichophyton rubrum, which spreads from a plantar skin infection.

7. Proximal subungal onychomycosis (PSO) is the least common type in patients with a normal immune status.
8. PSO is most commonly caused by Trichophyton rubrum.
9. White superficial onychomycosis (WSO) causes approximately 10% of all cases.
10. WSO is usually caused by the Trichophyton mentagrophytes.
