Adhesives/Welding
Composite
Steel processing is very well understood and vehicle manufacturers are heavily invested
Aluminium processing is now largely understood – involves mixed material jointing
Composite joining is still under development, not least because materials are still developing

“46% of industry professionals admitted the cost and time of mixed-material joining is the biggest
hindrance to further reducing vehicle weight”. GALM survey April 2015
Advancing the Joining of Materials
Manufacturing reality…
Heavy investment in metals processing and the higher cost of composite materials means the reality in volume manufacturing is to introduce light-weight components over time. To achieve this overcoming the challenge of mixed-materials joining is critical. OntoTM can solve the problem – allowing the bonding for composite and metal components, both structural and non-structural

Advanced materials are hard to bond to
• Chemical resistance
• Temperature resistance
Mixed-materials – an adhesive that works well with one material may not work with the other. OntoTM creates compatible surfaces
Bonding: compatibility problems

Surface preparation must be practical for volume manufacture
• A single process suitable for all materials
• Easy to apply
• Flexible in application
• Fast processing
Bonding: compatibility problems
OntoTM meets all requirements No simpler solution

Issues with Entanglement
• Why is adhesion such an issue now? - Environmental Drivers
• Adhesives and primers used to contain harmful organic solvents (Toluene, Xylene, Ethyl Benzene)
• These solvents swell the underlying material to prepare it for bonding
• Health & Safety concerns along with VOC limits mean these types of products are less welcome in a modern manufacturing environment
• Moving to Water based adhesives lowers H&S concerns – also non -flammable
• However primary adhesion mechanism is removed leading to adhesion issues
• Not effective on all plastics and composites
