Welcome

From June of 1919 to August of 1920, these United States passed and ratified the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. In commemoration of this centennial, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company will shine the spotlight on the Women of Cincinnati Shakespeare Company in our “Season of the Woman”, both onstage and off, and join organizations across the city in an ArtsWave led initiative called “Power of Her” to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage!

Beginning in July, we will bring you a Regional Premiere production of Miss Holmes, which adapts the classic mystery series and reimagines the iconic Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson as two women solving crimes in Victorian England. We will examine the relationships of women in politics in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, with the title character re-gendered as a woman. We’ll watch two women win the day over infamous trickster Falstaff through their own uniquely feminine wits and wiles in Shakespeare’s hilarious comedy, The Merry Wives of Windsor. And we’ll bear witness to Shakespeare’s searing depiction of both female power and violence against women in his bloodiest tragedy, Titus Andronicus.

We will welcome female playwrights and female authors as we present a fresh adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice by Kate Hamill and the Regional Premiere of the heartwarming story behind the friends who saved William Shakespeare’s plays from disappearance in The Book of Will by Lauren Gunderson. We will also tell the story of a family in turmoil centered on a powerhouse matriarch in the modern classic August: Osage County by Tracy Letts.

And, because the passage of the 19th Amendment, while worthy of celebration, did not in fact guarantee voting rights for all, we will be presenting All the Way by Robert Schenkkan. Set in the tumultuous 1960s, this modern classic tells story of LBJ’s fight to enact the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Thank you for joining us as we celebrate all season long with the best that classical theatre can offer at the nation’s fastest-growing Shakespeare company right here in Cincinnati. Enjoy the show!

Sincerely,

The Women of Cincinnati Shakespeare Company

Leadership Biographies

BRIAN ISAAC PHILLIPS*

(Producing Artistic Director and Ensemble, 21st Season) has just celebrated his 16th season of artistic leadership of Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. He was named Producing Artistic Director in 2010 after being Artistic Director since 2003. Prior to these responsibilities, he served with the organization as Associate Artistic Director for one season, as well as four seasons as a member of the acting company. He is a proud member of Actor’s Equity Association and the Stage Director’s and Choreographer’s Society.

Mr. Phillips, originally from Pittsburgh, PA, is a graduate of Morehead State University and has been a resident of Cincinnati for two decades. In that time he has worked with Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, Cincinnati Opera, Cincinnati Ballet, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, The Children’s Theatre, Know Theatre of Cincinnati, New Stage Collective, Diogenes Theatre Company, as well as over 100 productions with Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. He also has worked regionally at theatres in North Carolina, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Northern Ohio. Most recent CSC directing credits include A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, 1984, Dracula, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Tempest (Co-Director), The Elephant Man, Antony and Cleopatra, Death of a Salesman, Cyrano de Bergerac, One Man, Two Guvnors, Waiting for Godot, The Birds, and The Great Gatsby. He also recently completed directing Shakespeare’s entire History Cycle at CSC! He is pleased to have led CSC in becoming one of the first five theatres in the United States to have produced Shakespeare’s complete 38 play canon and to have personally completed the canon as well.

Mr. Phillips was nominated for the 2016 SDCF Zelda Fichandler Award. This award honors an outstanding director or choreographer making an exceptional contribution to the national arts landscape through theatre work in a particular region. Mr. Phillips recently served on the Executive Committee of the Shakespeare Theatre Association, an international organization comprised of theatres dedicated to the production of Shakespeare’s works around the globe. Cincinnati Shakespeare was also proud to host the 2018 conference here in the Queen City!

On May 3, 2013, Brian was recognized by Mayor Mark Mallory and the City of Cincinnati for his decade of achievement and service at CSC. He was also selected for the 2014 Class of Forty Under Forty and a finalist for the Ohio Governors’ Arts Awards. In 2016, Mr. Phillips graduated from Cincinnati USA Chamber’s 39th Class of Leadership Cincinnati and is now happy to serve on one of the steering committees. Also in 2016, Mr. Phillips was selected as a finalist for the Business Courier’s 2016 C-Suite Awards for Chief Executive Officer.

And finally, in 2017 Mr. Phillips was thrilled to have helped the company realize a long term dream of operating a world-class facility with the opening of the $17.5MM Otto M. Budig Theater at the corner of 12th and Elm Streets in OTR. Brian is the lucky husband of one of the most amazing actors in town and the proud father of Holden (10) and Annabel (7).

Community Impact: Education and Outreach

For over 25 years, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company has been a proud partner of the community. CSC has been committed to inviting young voices to join the conversation about Shakespeare, the classics, drama, and more by presenting quality, engaging performances and workshops for up to 50,000 students a year. We proudly offer a myriad of ways for students, teachers and communities to experience Shakespeare and the classics including our Education Matinees, Tours and Workshops.

In the past 12 months, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s Education Program has served 50,000 students with 35+ student matinees, 50+ in-school tours, 30+ in-school workshops, five seven-week in-school residencies, 40 sessions of acting classes, nine weeks of Summer Camp, and 225 in-school workshops for PROJECT38. Each of these programs promoted the development of 21st century skills in students, demonstrating measurable impact on their comprehension, appreciation, academics, and social skills.

Our Education Matinees offer students and teachers the opportunity to see a main stage show at a reduced cost and engage in a post-performance discussion with the cast. During our 25th Anniversary Season, students had the opportunity to see one of Shakespeare’s romances, The Winter’s Tale. Before seeing Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale performed live, only 35% of students said they understood all or most of the play; after seeing the play, 90% of students said they understood all or most of it. Students also developed an appreciation for Shakespeare. After seeing The Winter’s Tale, 86% of students said they’d like to see another Shakespeare play sometime (and for 22% of students, this was their first theatre experience!)

Our Tours and Workshops bring the joy of theatre to schools and classrooms. CSC’s Touring Company, comprised of six professional actors, toured three of Shakespeare’s classics (Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Macbeth) this past year visiting over 50 schools in the Tri-State area. Our Workshops optimizes resources already present in schools by allowing students to get up on their feet with exercises and activities led by professional actors and teaching artists from CSC. Workshops are catered to the specific classroom and give students the chance to examine literature from the inside out. Many of these Workshops allow students the opportunity to direct a scene, stage a fight, and much more!

Finally, over the course of the year, CSC partnered with 54 community organizations across the region including parks, libraries, retirement homes, community centers, hospitals, and juvenile detention facilities to provide quality arts programming for the residents of Greater Cincinnati. In the summer of 2018, CSC’s FREE Shakespeare in the Park tour expanded by four weeks and one extra production, bringing three productions of Shakespeare plays to a record-breaking 15,000 individuals at 46 neighborhood parks anywhere within a three-hour radius of downtown Cincinnati. As a result, 77% of residents thought their neighborhood was more invigorated and 82% felt more community pride. The Shakespeare in the Park tour increases the affordability, availability, and accessibility of the arts outside the downtown core: 25% of patrons make less than $20k/year, 69% have little to no arts experiences in their neighborhood, and 22% of parks are located in severely distressed census tracts. Following the appearance of Shakespeare in the Park in their neighborhood, 90% of patrons felt they had access to a unique arts event they might not otherwise have.

Community Outreach and Impact is extremely important to us here at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. This is why our Mission for Cincinnati Shakespeare Company “is [to be] a resident ensemble theatre company bringing Shakespeare and the Classics to life for audiences of all ages.”

PROJECT38 Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is proud to offer all programming associated with PROJECT38, including 225 workshops, over 1,000 contact hours, four days of the Festival, five professional performances, and a dozen workshops at NO COST to students, teachers, or schools. 37% of the 42 PROJECT38 schools are urban, 19% are rural, 44% are Title I, and 80% are public schools.

Closer Look: The Women Behind the Story

Claudia Alta Taylor “Lady Bird” Johnson

In 1934 Lady Bird met Lyndon Baines Johnson, then a Congressional secretary visiting Austin on official business; he promptly asked her for a date, which she accepted. He courted her from Washington with letters, telegrams, and telephone calls. Seven weeks later he was back in Texas; he proposed to her and she accepted. In her own words: “Sometimes Lyndon simply takes your breath away.” They were married in November 1934.

The years that followed were devoted to Lyndon’s political career, with “Bird” as partner, confidante, and helpmate. She helped keep his Congressional office open during World War II when he volunteered for naval service; and in 1955, when he had a severe heart attack, she helped his staff keep things running smoothly until he could return to his post as Majority Leader of the Senate. He once remarked that voters “would happily have elected her over me.”

In the election of 1960, Lady Bird successfully stumped for Democratic candidates across 35,000 miles of campaign trail. As wife of the Vice President, she became an ambassador of goodwill by visiting 33 foreign countries. Moving to the White House after Kennedy’s murder, she did her best to ease a painful transition. She soon set her own stamp of Texas hospitality on social events, but these were not her chief concern. She created a First Lady’s Committee for a More Beautiful Capital, then expanded her program to include the entire nation. She took a highly active part in her husband’s war-on-poverty program, especially the Head Start project for preschool children.

Coretta Scott King

Coretta Scott King was one of the most influential women leaders in our world. Prepared by her family, education, and personality for a life committed to social justice and peace, she entered the world stage in 1955 as wife of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and as a leading participant in the American Civil Rights Movement. Her remarkable partnership with Dr. King resulted not only in four children, who became dedicated to carrying forward their parent’s work, but also in a life devoted to the highest values of human dignity in service to social change. Mrs. King traveled throughout the world speaking out on behalf of racial and economic justice, women’s and children’s rights, gay and lesbian dignity, religious freedom, the needs of the poor and homeless, full-employment, health care, educational opportunities, nuclear disarmament and environmental justice. She lent her support to pro-democracy movements world-wide and consulted with many world leaders, including Corazon Aquino, Kenneth Kaunda, and Nelson Mandela.

After her husband’s assassination in 1968, Mrs. King founded and devoted great energy and commitment to building and developing programs for the Atlanta-based Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change as a living memorial to her husband’s life and dream. Situated in the Freedom Hall complex encircling Dr. King’s tomb, The King Center is today located inside of a 23-acre national historic park which includes his birth home, and which hosts over one million visitors a year.

Closer Look: The Civil Rights Movement

A timeline of key events in the Civil Rights Movement:

July 26, 1948: President Harry Truman issues Executive Order 9981 to end segregation in the Armed Services.

May 17, 1954: Brown v. Board of Education, a consolidation of five cases into one, is decided by the Supreme Court, effectively ending racial segregation in public schools. Many schools, however, remained segregated.

December 1, 1955: Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama bus. Her defiant stance prompts a year-long Montgomery bus boycott.

January 10 – 11, 1957: Sixty black pastors and civil rights leaders from several southern states — including Martin Luther King, Jr. — meet in Atlanta, Georgia to coordinate nonviolent protests against racial discrimination and segregation.

September 4, 1957: Nine black students known as the “Little Rock Nine,” are blocked from integrating into Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. President Dwight D. Eisenhower eventually sends federal troops to escort the students, however, they continue to be harassed.

September 9, 1957: Eisenhower signs the Civil Rights Act of 1957 into law to help protect voter rights. The law allows federal prosecution of those who suppress another’s right to vote.

February 1, 1960: Four college students in Greensboro, North Carolina refuse to leave a Woolworth’s “whites only” lunch counter without being served. Their nonviolent demonstration sparks similar “sit-ins” throughout the city and in other states.

June 11, 1963: Governor George C. Wallace stands in a doorway at the University of Alabama to block two black students from registering. The standoff continues until President John F. Kennedy sends the National Guard to the campus.

August 28, 1963: Approximately 250,000 people take part in The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Martin Luther King gives the closing address in front of the Lincoln Memorial and states, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.’”

September 15, 1963: A bomb at 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama kills four young girls and injures several other people prior to Sunday services. The bombing fuels angry protests.

July 2, 1964: President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law, preventing employment discrimination due to race, color, sex, religion or national origin. Title VII of the Act establishes the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to help prevent workplace discrimination.

February 21, 1965: Black religious leader Malcolm X is assassinated during a rally by members of the Nation of Islam.

March 7, 1965: In the Selma to Montgomery March, around 600 civil rights marchers walk to Selma, Alabama to Montgomery — the state’s capital — in protest of black voter suppression. Local police block and brutally attack them. Closer Look: Commission by Oregon Shakespeare

Robert Schenkkan’s racing political thriller, All the Way, was first commissioned by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival as a part of their “American Revolutions: The United States History Cycle.” The American Revolutions Project began in 2008 with the final of the 37 new plays commissioned and developed in 2019. The project showcases moments of change in the history of the United States. As stated by Oregon Shakespeare Festival, “bringing together artists and theaters and from around the country, American Revolutions works to establish a shared understanding of our nation’s past while illuminating the best paths for our nation’s future.”

All the Way ran at Oregon Shakespeare Festival July 25 through November 3, 2012 and was directed by Bill Rauch with Jack Willis as LBJ and Kenajuan Bentley as MLK. The production was subsequently performed at American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard University in 2013. All the Way is the Winner of the 2014 Tony Award for Best Play, the Drama Desk Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, the Drama League Award, the Co-Recipient of the inaugural Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired by American History and the recipient of the Harold and Mimi Steinberg/American Theatre Critics Association for New Play Award.

In 2014, the A.R.T. production of All the Way appeared on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre for a limited run between March and June. Bryan Cranston played LBJ and Bill Rauch directed this production as well.

After its staggering success on stage, All the Way became a 2016 American biographical TV drama film. The drama was adapted to the screen by Robert Schenkkan and directed by Jay Roach with Bryan Cranston reprising his role from Broadway as LBJ and Anthony Mackie as MLK. The TV drama was first broadcasted on HBO and has been nominated for a Television Critics Association Award for Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries and Specials, as well as eight Primetime Emmy Awards.

Closer Look: Ohio Roots of Freedom Summer

Freedom Summer was a 1964 voter registration drive sponsored by civil rights organizations including the Congress on Racial Equality (CORE) and the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Aimed at increasing black voter registration in Mississippi, the Freedom Summer workers included black Mississippians and hundreds of out-of-state, predominately white volunteers.

In June 1964, approximately 800 northern college students and experienced southern civil rights workers gathered on the campus of then-Western College for Women (now part of Miami University in Oxford, OH) for two week-long training sessions. The mission was to travel to segregated Mississippi to register black voters and teach at “freedom schools.”

However, Freedom Summer was dangerous — Molotov cocktail explodes in basement of Sweet Rest Church of Christ Holiness; Civil rights car hit by bullet; Students told to watch out for Klan. Some are actual newspaper headlines from the era. The most chilling refer to three young men: James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner. They came to the first week’s training session in Oxford, OH, left for Mississippi before it was finished, and soon went missing. Their disappearance haunted the second session. That August their bodies were found near Philadelphia, Mississippi. The slayings of the three men helped spur passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Recently, on December 30, 2019, Miami University in Oxford, Ohio honored these three slain Civil Rights activists by renaming student lounges in residence halls near where they trained during the Freedom Summer in 1964. Additionally, Miami honors the three activists with an outdoor classroom memorial, historical sign, memorial trees and artwork at the site on its Western campus where much of the training occurred. In 2014, Miami commemorated Freedom Summer with a Celebrating Freedom conference and 50th anniversary dedication. This fall in 2019, for the 55th anniversary, Miami and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati co-sponsored a conference, Freedom Summer — Then, Now and the Future.

In June 2020, when the National Civil Rights Conference is hosted at Miami University, the first time it will not be held in the South, there will be a session on Freedom Summer and some of the conference will be held on the actual site of Freedom Summer.

Singing “We Shall Overcome”, this group of Freedom Summer volunteers begins its journey from Oxford, Ohio to Mississippi. Despite the dangers, more than 1,000 college students volunteered to canvass, teach and establish community centers (photo Ted Polumbaum, Newseum Collection).

Closer Look: Costume and Scenic Design

Please enjoy this note from Scenic Designer, Shannon Moore

“For our production of All The Way, we wanted to be able to create the sense of the presidential office and responsibility that is ever looming, while being able to travel to multiple locations very quickly. The use of news and media was becoming more and more present in the 1960s and the television coverage of the presidential race and of the fight for the Civil Rights Act was unprecedented. The pressure for a smooth race while holding one’s principals was more and more in the spotlight. The televisions and projections in the scenery and written into the script are essential to understanding the growing pressure of the constant public face that was becoming the presidency, along with giving public voice to the growing demand for equality. By combining the two concepts, we are able to see how press becomes pressure in an office struggling to serve the people, while often being undercut by inter-office politics and divided loyalties. Placing audience members in the witness boxes designed to mimic the senate chambers of the time allows not only the viewer to come even closer to the product on stage, but also keeps the presidential office under public scrutiny even when the televisions are turned off.”

Please enjoy this note from Costume Designer, Rainy Edwards

“We are in the turbulent years of 1963-64, with a very modern silhouette that most of you will recognize. Now this is an American setting, a very modest and business setting. You won’t see any of the mod suits or graphic prints that the youths and celebrities of the time would be showing off. Here at the White House you’ll see lots of men in suits and women in modest business skirts. (Women were not allowed to wear pants on the Senate floor until 1993.) What was very fun and helpful for me is that I could easily look up every person in this show, during these years and see what they would wear. (Hint: It was suits.) But, as I was looking up all these people, I started recognizing them in pictures of other people I was doing research on. As someone who was not born until much later and so not knowing lots of these key side players it was very interesting to see the story these pictures told after all these years.”

Pride and Prejudice by Kate Hamill adaPted from tHe novel by jane austen directed by sara clarK

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” One of the single most beloved stories of all time returns to the CSC stage in a fresh new adaptation which critics are calling “delightfully different,” “fizzy and festive,” and “unlike any adaptation of Jane Austen one has seen before.” Sweepingly romantic, with a good dose of the tongue-in-cheek, Pride and Prejudice follows the affaires de cœur of the witty and willful Elizabeth Bennet, as she finds that the path to true love can lead to the most unexpected of places.

William sHaKesPeare’s Hamlet directed by amy attaWay

The mysterious death of a king is followed by his brother’s unconventional ascension to the throne. The Queen’s bed casts young Hamlet, usurped heir to the crown, in the role of reluctant avenger. Incest and intrigue, murder and madness, triumph and treachery all combine to paint one of the most complex and compelling portraits in all of English literature.

Closer Look: League of Women Voters

Visit the Box Office tonight for more information regarding voter registration.

In February 1920, just six months before the U.S. Constitution was amended to give women the right to vote, the National American Woman Suffrage Association’s president, Carrie Chapman Catt, proposed the creation of the League of Women Voters to teach women how to exercise their new political rights and responsibilities. After the passage of the 19th amendment, the League was a collection of former suffrage organizations at the state and local levels. Now this powerful organization operates with tiers at the local, state and national levels.

Since its inception, the League of Women Voters of the United States has helped millions of women and men become informed participants in government. In fact, the first league convention voted 69 separate items as statements of principle and recommendations for legislation. Among them were protection for women and children, right of working women, food supply and demand, social hygiene, the legal status of women, and American citizenship. The League’s first major national legislative success was the passage of the Sheppard-Towner Act providing federal aid for maternal and child care programs.

Current Local League

At the state level, The League of Women Voters of Ohio works on advocacy issues on many fronts, including gerrymandering, voter rights, the census, voter education and registration, environmental issues, education, and so much more! There are 29 local area/city leagues in Ohio. Formed in 1920, The League of

Women Voters of the Cincinnati Area (LWVCA) is one of the oldest Leagues in the country! The League of Women Voters of the Cincinnati Area is a nonpartisan political organization encouraging the informed and active participation in government with membership open to any citizen of voting age, male or female. Their work in the community engages its members in public policy initiatives, education and advocacy for voter rights, as well as provision of expanded voter services, speaker forums on community issues, and more. In February 2020 the LWVCA will be celebrating our Centennial! That’s 100 years of advocacy, education, and civic action! We hope you will join us for our Centennial festivities in the spring!
