WElCOME!The nights are closing in, the year is wrapping up, and the cinemas are bursting with legendary epics and uplifting tales depicting the strength of the human spirit, all ready to take us in to 2015 on a high note.

We’ve followed Bilbo Baggins through two films and now come to the conclusion of Peter Jackson’s return to Middle-Earth, with The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Smaug has arisen and threatens Lake-Town, but only Gandalf knows of a much weightier threat in the return of Sauron.

Katniss Everdeen’s strength and character is tested now more than ever as she faces the turmoil President Snow has wrought upon the citizens of Panem in the wake of her escape, in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I.

Whether presented through fantastical realms or reality, at the heart of captivating storytelling is the quality of the human spirit, and nowhere is that more clear than in Unbroken, based on the true story of Olympic hero-turned-POW prisoner Louis Zamperini.

So whether you’re looking for a fantastic, futuristic, or historical setting for a rousing winter adventure, grab a seat and get ready to watch courage unfold! Until next time!

WHAT’S ON

The hobbiT: The baTTle of The five armies

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves.

Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town. Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honour to hoard it as Bilbo’s frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf, the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain.

As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide - unite or be destroyed.

IT’S A HArd KNOcK LIfe

8 November / December 2014

A classic that has delighted audiences for generations comes to the big screen with a new, contemporary vision in Columbia Pictures’ comedy, Annie. Director/Producer/Screenwriter Will Gluck and a team of talented producers team up to provide a modern telling that captures the magic of the classic characters and original show.

Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) stars as Annie, a young, happy foster kid who’s also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014. Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they’d be back for her someday, it’s been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mum Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz). But everything’s about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) - advised by his brilliant VP, Grace (Rose Byrne) and his shrewd and scheming campaign advisor, Guy (Bobby Cannavale) - makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in.

Stacks believes he’s her guardian angel, but Annie’s self-assured nature and bright, sun-will-come-out-tomorrow outlook on life just might mean it’s the other way around.

An odd friendship soon blossoms between the improbable pair. Together with a pregnant stripper named Daka (Watts), vincent brings Oliver along on all the stops that make up his daily routine - the race track, a strip club, and the local dive bar.

Olympic hero turns World War II Japanese prisoner, in Angelina Jolie’s uplifting return to the director’s chair.WOrds Chris Wasey

l ouis Zamperini’s story is little short of incredible, a lifetime of challenges and trials to overcome. Were it not a true story, it’s likely no one would believe it.

A boy of limited physical stature, Louis was bullied and beaten by other children. Bloodied in the dirt, he vowed he would never stay down, never be broken, and this adolescent decision would define his entire life.

Training longer and harder than his more naturally gifted classmates, Louis became an Olympic champion, and barely out of his teens, a national icon. As World War II unfolded, a sense of duty saw him volunteer for the US Air Force.

Shot down over the Pacific, he and his crew must survive the rough seas and blazing sun for 47 days. Rescued - but by the Japanese navy - his greatest challenge begins: he becomes a prisoner of war, and the guards know they must break him before “the Olympic hero” becomes a symbol of defiance.

English actor Jack O’Connell plays Zamperini, and though he’s best known as James Cook in Skins, he also had more sinister turns in Harry Brown and Eden Lake. Alongside him are Domhnall Gleeson (best known for roles in the Harry Potter films, and Richard Curtis’ About Time) and Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy, Inside Llewyn Davis).

Human endurance story and heart-wrenching sports drama, this tale of the human spirit has something for all audiences. And given the appropriate pedigree of both writers and director, expect Unbroken to be a quiet - and uplifting - Christmas hit.

based on the 2010 non-fiction book by laura hillenbrand, “Unbroken: a World War ii story of survival, resilience and redemption”, Unbroken is tipped for academy award success.

it covers a lot of ground; underdog becomes Olympian, survival against the seas, and prisoner of war. it would be easy to make three separate Oscar baiting features from the story.

With a screenplay from the Coen brothers, expect the sentiment to be kept understated, and with direction from angelina Jolie (known for throwing herself into personal projects), expect the a-lister to pick up her first Oscar on the other side of the camera.

Journey’s end

Release date 12 decembeR / director Peter Jackson / starring Lee Pace, Benedict

Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly / Genre Adventure, Fantasy

Few expected another trilogy when Peter Jackson revealed his plans to bring J.R.R. Tolkien’s enduringly popular novel to the big screen, but

the Academy Award-winning filmmaker has succeeded with two populous fantasy adventures that have left audiences eagerly anticipating its epic finale.

As the subplots of The Hobbit’s overarching narrative draw to a close, so does Jackson’s time in Middle Earth. He marks this final outing with the defining chapter that bridges the gap to its chronological successor, The Lord of the Rings.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies brings the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the Dwarves of Erebor to its dramatic conclusion.

Having reclaimed their homeland from the fire-breathing dragon Smaug, our heroes now face the consequences for unintentionally releasing a deadly terror upon the world.

As a furious Smaug rains his fiery wrath down on the innocent men, women and children of Lake-town, a wounded Thorin Oakenshield has become blinded by greed and sacrifices friendship to continue his search for the Arkenstone. In attempting to help him see reason, Bilbo is driven towards a dangerous decision, unaware that an even greater peril approaches.

Unbeknownst to anyone but Gandalf, the Dark Lord Sauron has returned and unleashed an enormous Orc horde on the Lonely Mountain. The Dwarves, Elves and Men must set aside their differences to combat this reinvigorated enemy. With the future of Middle-Earth hanging in the balance, Bilbo finds himself at the epicentre of an enormous battle as five great armies go to war.

Fictional villains take many forms; they are reapers of souls and raiders of galaxies; diabolical masterminds and creatures born from unspeakable darkness; they sit upon brimstone thrones and wield otherworldly powers —

yet all are personifications of the struggles we face throughout our lives. Young adult fiction and its many villains have shaped the manner in which adolescent generations address their own struggles. From J.K. Rowling’s narratives of sacrifice in Harry Potter to the undying, doomed romanticism of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga, the themes in both written word and film adaptations have explored serious issues that affect individuals around the world. Very few contemporary tales, however, have exhibited the scope and ambition of Suzanne Collins’ celebrated Hunger Games series. Focusing on the disparity between the lives of citizens in the destitute districts and decadent capitol city of the post-apocalyptic nation of Panem, Collins unveiled

unique villains that also felt recognisable from our own inequality-filled world: corrupt rulers who allow horrors such as extreme poverty and hunger to take place under their authority.

But for every villain, there must be a hero; a champion born into her peoples’ inherited ruin, yet unwilling to accept their plight. Since her first venture into battle during 2012’s The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen (Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence) has honed both her bow skills and her ability to unite others in opposition of the immoral Capitol and the heartless President Snow. There’s a carefully scattered breadcrumb-trail of inspiring themes, winged motifs, and fiery symbolism throughout the first two smash-hit films. These emblems of hope gradually built Lawrence’s unassuming heroine into a beacon of defiance, and once lit, could lead the masses to a ferocious end in the hope of forging a brighter beginning.

The arena is now a distant but harrowing memory for surviving tributes. Following the shocking events of Catching Fire and Katniss’ triumph over President Snow during the third Quarter Quell, the young freedom fighter has been recruited by the leaders of a new rebellion to provoke an uprising against the Capitol and their stranglehold upon the citizens of Panem’s districts. Old allies such as second Quarter Quell survivor Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson), and childhood friend Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth) will once again stand by Katniss’ side in what will prove to be her darkest hour - but their ranks will be bolstered by a new mysterious force. President of District 13 and rebellion leader Alma Coin (Julianne Moore) will play a major role in both parts one and two

of The Hunger Games’ cinematic swansong - striving to reignite Katniss’ dwindling spirit to fight following the horrors and traumas she has suffered. However, this new alliance’s greatest threat may come from within. After being kidnapped, tortured, and brainwashed by the Capitol following the Quarter Quell, Katniss’s Games partner and tentative love interest, Peeta Mellark has his own traumas to overcome. Many questions remain about his fate, but the biggest question for Katniss is this: to what lengths will Panem’s new Mockingjay go to save her oldest and most invaluable ally?

Not only did the bloodthirsty “entertainment” of the previous pictures provide an isolated arena in which competitors were forced to take up arms and compete in a heart-stopping fight for survival, but it also worked as a means by which filmmakers and audiences could explore themes of resistance, love, family, and ultimately, tragic loss. Trailers have revealed a devastated portrait of Katniss’ home, District 12, levelled in an act of brutal retaliation by powerful Capitol forces in the wake of her escape. The fight is no longer restricted to a televised gladiatorial stage and the consequences are greater than ever. Director Francis Lawrence has promised a wealth of new enthralling character arcs for fans to become immersed in, alongside exotic locations to explore.

The stage is set. We have our heroes and our villains, the encroaching darkness, and the faded yet resilient flames that will grow into great rebellious fires. Will Katniss learn that it’s the things we love that eventually destroy us, or will a nation be avenged and reborn in the name of a Mockingjay? The games may well be over, but the fight for freedom has only just begun.

so they’ve become Panem’s greatest symbol of resistance, but what are mockingjays, really? results of genetic experimentation, these birds are a hybrid of mockingbirds and another of Collins’ winged creations, jabberjays. Capable of mimicking any sounds from the sweetest laughter to the gruffest of growls, the birds are even able to memorize entire songs - but only if they enjoy the sound of your voice. Katniss possesses a special bond with the birds, and the mockingjay pin she wears once belonged to her friend’s aunt, maysilee donner - a fallen but never forgotten combatant in the 50th Hunger Games.
