Center for Distributed Learning

The purpose of this resource is to guide instructors to select online tools that align with learning objectives. This

resource organizes learning objectives into three main categories based on the cognitive domain of Bloom’s

Taxonomy. This taxonomy conceptualizes learning from most basic (recalling information) to most complex (making

judgments about information). The three categories below reveal action verbs that are commonly used to create

learning objectives.

• The Foundational category comprises learning objectives relating to basic knowledge and comprehension. Itincludes action verbs that describe lower-order cognitive skills, such as “define,” “explain,” and “match.”

• The Mediating category comprises learning objectives relating to application and analysis of knowledge. Itincludes action verbs that describe intermediate-order cognitive skills, such as “analyze,” “interpret,” and“predict.”

• The Ultimate category comprises learning objectives relating to evaluation and synthesis of knowledge. Itincludes action verbs that describe higher-order cognitive skills, such as “create,” “debate,” and “reflect.”
