Animals have the same rights asHumans as regards their claim to life, freedom andphysical as well as mental inviolability. Everything else istyranny.We have, what is usually hailed as one of the best animalwelfare laws, in Germany. However, it is never appliedwhere there is most need (industry), and personally I thinkit is more of a hindrance than a boon to the development ofanimal rights. The law strives to better the conditions underwhich animals are kept, abused and killed. But it does notchallenge the notion that it is alright to use animals forHuman interests.It will have to start with granting said rights to primates, themost near relatives to man. And work itself "down" fromthere. Sadly, that is the way it will have to happen ... manwill need time to accustom himself to the idea of grantingrights of life and freedom to others than Humans (and eventhat has taken him a long time). There will be fierceresistance, no doubt. Much hinges on the animal industry -issues of money and power (as best demonstrated by thenew US ant-terror legislations AETA - aimed at the ARmovement). Some countries will be more willing toembrace such an effort than others - religion is anotherpoint to consider: all the big religions support thedominance of man over nature and the animals. They willtry to defend the status qou on the basis of it being "God'swill".I sincerely don't know. It will be slow going with manyfrustrating setbacks. There must be a will in society toembrace these values - not even politics can forcesomething upon people that they completely reject. And atthe moment I don't see much will in society to change.I don't know what will have to happen to man before he'swilling to think beyond himself.People who "love" animals these days, are not usuallywilling to grant them the same rights as they have. Formany that would go too far. It is difficult.I am not sure I understand that correctly. Animalsconsidered as pets in Germany are protected under certainlaws, whereas cat and dogs in Asia are not.

You'll get life in jail for killing onlyone single human, but to my knowledge, paying a fine is allyou possibly get for the murder of multiple non-humans. Inmy opinion, this has to be adjusted in BOTH directions, tokind of meet up in the middle. I can't see why someonewould get life in jail for killing one of a species that is BYFAR the most destructive to earth and whose populationnumbers have FAR exceeded what this planet could bear,while killing a member of any other species that are notharmful to their environment and sometimes evenendangered is "no big deal".
