The most valuable resource of an online shop is undoubtedly the instructors who represent the organization daily through personal contact and interaction with students. Building and sustaining a successful online school can be ensured by supporting the front line instructors and developers and building program capacity from within. During this session you will learn and experience techniques that continue to work in Kentucky and begin to plan how they can be applied within your organization.

Who Are We?The Kentucky Virtual High School which services K-12 students. KVHS was the second state sponsored Virtual High school and began teaching students online in January 2000.

e-Learning Kentucky which serves adults in online PD courses, School Based Decision Making (SBDM) training courses (that include Kentucky parents members) and online Communities of practice. Online PD began in 2001 and e-Learning Kentucky has served over 5,000 educators. The' 07 Fall session had over 700 registrations in 26 course sessions. Two years ago KDE partnered with KET and joined the e-Learning for Educators federal grant. This grant provided by Federal Ready To Teach funding has allowed KET, KDE, & EPSB to work together to train online PD facilitators and course designers. Six other states are involved in the grant a 75% of the funding is to research to impact that online PD has on teacher practice and student achievement.2The e-Learning Kentucky Family

10Summer Retreat 2007

11RemembrancesOur upcoming retreat has the theme of, Making a Difference. I'm thinking this may also need to be our theme for all of the 07-08 school year and maybe even beyond.

What an impressive yet daunting charge? But ponder briefly with me.

If we have 532 participants in our online courses and let's say for fun 50% are elementary and 50% are secondary. The 266 elementary teachers will have at least 25 students in their rooms next fall. So that means over 6,650 students could be directly influenced by the PD course that you are about to begin tomorrow. Now stay with me.... What if these 266 participants teach an average of at least 10 more years? Now we have over 66,500 students being impacted by our work. What if among those 266 elementary participants there are 10 instructional leaders? These folks in an average Kentucky elementary school would impact over 500 students and at least 20 staff members. So these 10 principals would likely impact over 5,000 students and 100 teachers! Since principals don't hang around long in 5 years they might impact over 55,000 students. WOW...Now back to our secondary friends. Since secondary folks teach at least 25 students in 6 classes a semester this amounts to around 300 students at year (in a traditional secondary model) or impacting over 79,800 students during the 07-08 school year! Now in ten years these 266 secondary participants might impact over 798,000 students. Now being "math" disabled and not really liking grad school statistics this looks like a "BUNCH LOT OF POTENTIAL IMPACT" to me!So that one drop, or that one request for an extension, or the email for make up time for a vacation activity, translates into impacting real live Kentucky students and possibly the future of our Commonwealth.

Are we about great things? I think so!12
