A Confusing and Troublesome Beginning…• Began the semester with no understanding or feeling for need of an online identity• Eventually started building up my identity by using more sites and expanding the content I

add to/include in sites I already had profiles for

…and eventually I got to here

What is My Online Identity?Consists of three fields:

Personal• Minimal but growing• I have been expanding the types of sites I use and trying out sites that reflect a lot of

personality and individuality

Professional• Developing• All related to my involvement in the media industry

Educational/Uni Based• Most Dominant• Feeds into what will become my professional online ID

My most used site (other than Facebook)!!!!I began using it strictly for the purpose of Uni work but it has become a site I feel I get the most out of.

Why I like it and use it:• Extremely easy to use, easy editing and posting, you can link to

other pages or sites etc.!!!

• It demonstrates both my development in my media degree as well as aspect of my personal self.

• A strong Identity is clear through my posts.

• Able to choose your own theme (although I am far to scared of breaking my blog to change the theme. Its nice knowing the option is there though should I decide to make it look more ‘me’)

• You can use ‘categories’ in order to have an organised blog. The categories are shown on the side of the posts so navigation is quick and simple. It is easy to see the work/projects I am involved in.

aim to do more of.• Blog post links to my twitter account

My Development of Using the Site:• Actively making an effort to

appropriately use # and specifically #im212

• Following more people/groups and therefore having a more active feed. More tweets means more to read.

• Actively using the site to interact with peers

Why I like Using it:• Fast, easy communication• Opportunity to follow people/groups

that interest you where I otherwise may not have been able to

• Able to ‘retweet’ statements I really like from others

A site I never wanted to use previously but now I like it!

Not a major part of my online identity but it is a site I use a lot so it still as value to me on a personal level.

Why I like it and use it:• Able to upload content to your own page as well as post to

others. I upload photos of uni life as well as family events and videos from YouTube I like etc. .

• I use it to stay in contact with friends and family I don’t get to see regularly.

• I like using the ‘chat’ feature. Its also easy to have multiple conversations with friends at once.

• Able to create ‘groups’ that assist in easy communication for group work Uni projects. This has been one of the most useful features for me.

• My page is 100% a representation of myself and the things I like. It shows almost every aspect of my life and self.

The most recent site I began using and quickly becoming one of my favourite sites!

Why I like it:• Simple and easy!

• Although it can be used professionally it is a blog I like using as it clearly expresses my personal interests and style

• I decide exactly how the site looks by choosing whatever theme suits me

• I have been starting to follow others (like twitter) both friends and people/organisations I don’t know personally but have an interest in

• I like how Visually interesting and creative it can be

Page 10: Online Identity Presentation. Rebecca Howard

I didn’t see it being a site I would like having at first but now I like having it as hub of the photos, videos, quotes etc. that express a lot about myself. It’s a site I can go back over and easily see things I responded positively to in the past as well as others viewing my page being able to do the same.

Why I like it:• A hub of things that express who

I am and what I like • Only have to link social media

sites that I want to feed to it. • You can subscribe to others and

others can see who I have an online connection with

• I use it as a personal space but it can easily be tailored to be a professional profile

Page 11: Online Identity Presentation. Rebecca Howard

Vimeo is a site I use primary when needed for Uni but it will become a place for professional work as I develop my portfolio within the film industry

Why I like it:• It it a site with a great deal of credibility.• The work you post is 100% owned by you

unlike other video sites such as YouTube• Creative environment to share and view other

people/organisations work• Positive space. Positive interaction• Can be both professional and personal at once.

That just depends on how I choose to use it and what I choose to upload

• Opportunity to view amazing projects and be a part of an interesting and valuable online community

Page 12: Online Identity Presentation. Rebecca Howard

• A site I only began using for the purpose of University.

• It is the site I feel I get the least out of using. Although that more so means I need to utilise it better.

Why I like it:The concept of having a communal space where you can upload and share works with people that you share common ground with is interesting and useful!

Page 13: Online Identity Presentation. Rebecca Howard

A site I use for Professional reasons although it has come in handy for student projects!

Why I like it and use:• Extensive resources for all people

involved in film and stage work. When I post jobs I get a lot of responses from experienced, professional and committed people

• I can post ads for free. E.g. I posted an ad for my Filmtv1 short film.

• Able to create my own professional profile and specify it to represent who I am or who I aspire to be in the industry. I list previous experience on my profile.

• Automatic search for jobs and volunteer work suited to me.

• It has help me both build my resume and present my resume
