Online Availability
List Coming
Dear Sisters and Brothers, In our continuing efforts to improve
the services that Local 80 provides to the members, we are launching an initiative that will allow for members to access the Call Board through the internet and your mobile devise.
To ensure that all security and member protections are in place before allowing the access to the information, takes a great deal of research that goes into the preparation.
In the meantime, responding to the request from members of the Grip and Crafts Service classifications, we will begin to publish the Online Availability List in the members’ area of the Local 80 web site. This list will include the member’s name and phone number. The purpose is to allow access to the those who are looking for members that are available for work when the call board is not available.
We recognize that some members do not want this information available in this manner. With that, you will be able to opt out of having your name and number appear on this Online Availability List . If you choose to opt out of having your name listed online, you will still maintain your availability status on the Call Board, and when calls come in your availability will be treated in the same way that you have always been. There will be no change in the traditional phone-in method of dispatching calls.
We intend on rolling out this service on July 1, 2018. If you do not want your name and phone number placed on this Online Availability List , please call or email the Local to let us know you, “I Do not want to be on the Online Availability List.”

Being a grip gives you the opportunity to work with all kinds of people in the industry. Some are gifted artists, directors, engineers and others are simply unforgettable. Dolly Grip ,Mike Mandell was one of those.
Mike started gripping in the 1960’s, working on the gang at Universal Studios. He then worked on the crew of F-Troop and began dolly gripping on the Lucy Show. From there, he went on to work on dozens of television shows and features.
I had the pleasure of working with Mike for
4 years on the television show, The Practice” He taught me to “work” the dolly in a much better way than I was doing, and he did it with patience, humor, and kindness.
Some people called him a gentle giant because he was as big as a door. Most everyone loved and admired Mike, and I was awed by his miles of experience. To me, he was the greatest dolly grip I ever stood in the shadow of and one of the finest men I have ever known.
Keep the dream alive…Kevin Wadowski

Well here I am. 1 month since I last jotted down anything. The weather has been a little cold and plenty of rain last week. It reminded me of a time, many years ago, when I showed up to work in jeans, tee shirt, and my trusty work boots. I knew there was a chance of rain but figure how bad could it get if it did rain. After all I’m in sunny California. Well I can honestly tell you I spent the whole day soaked from head to toe. I was wet, cold and miserably the entire day. From that day forward, I always keep rain gear in my vehicle. I tried buying gear that was cheap at first, but I always knew the value of a good pair of boots. The next big rain storm I worked in taught me the value of quality rain gear. I had a military poncho, but it let rain in quick. The thermos I had underneath kept me warm for a while, and I counted my blessings that my boots were water proof. I still had some ways to go on good rain gear. Well, I spent a few extra bucks and the next big scaffolding, job I was ready. I can tell you it made a huge difference on how I felt working in the rain that day. As a side note I keep a hoodie and a warm jacket too. Nothing like being out on location on a hot day only to find out it’s very cold there at night. One thing that I also found helpful during a hiatus, was when to file for unemployment. The first time I filed was the beginning of May. I sat out the waiting period, and then my claim money started to come in. I also had a hard rule, 10% of my pay check would go in to my savings. That way during hiatus, I would not have to scramble for work. I would look but not be in a tough spot if I couldn’t find something. Then a year later I went into hiatus a little early, more like the end of April. Well I reopened my claim. And, didn’t have a waiting period, since I was just reopening last years claim. I received 2 checks and then nothing. Hum, I figured the post office was slow or they, EDD, were a little behind. So, I waited a bit longer. About Mid-June I finally called and asked what I could do to help this along. They politely told me my claim had expired and that I would have to re-open a new claim. Ouch, boy was I behind the 8 ball on that. Re-open the claim, wait 2 weeks, and I was back to work anyway. Thinking it through I formulate a plan that seemed
to help things along. First, I realized that the holiday hiatus was the shortest. I would usually stop working somewhere around mid-December and be back to work mid-January. Usually less than a month. So, I would apply for unemployment insurance then. Have my waiting period and if I were lucky maybe even a 2 week check. The beauty of it was come summer hiatus, which could last a few months if not more. I would just re-open the claim, I would have no waiting period, and I wouldn’t have to worry about my claim expiring mid-way through the longer hiatus. I had a fairly worry-free hiatus. Except of course the Mrs. Asking, “did you find any work” every other day. The last thing I would like to touch on is an everyday tool we all carry. This simple but ever so handy tool we keep in our pocket is our knife. The one we cut rope, open boxes, and use for a myriad of things. One early morning, after buying coffee, I was pulled over by L.A.P.D. I had not turned my head lights on I just had my running lights. They whipped around, thinking that at 3 a.m. and no lights I must be drunk. They pulled me out of the car and did a quick frisk. Of course, out of my front pocket they pull my Spiderco. After a few tests they concluded that I wasn’t under the influence. While one held me at bay the other wrote the ticket. After the officer was done writing the ticket he noticed my tool of the trade and asked why I carried the knife and I explained to him my occupation and my need for the tool. He said, “Sir I can arrest you for being in possession of that knife.” I took a hard swallow and asked him what he wanted to do. Long story short he let me go if I promised to leave it on my tool belt at work. It turns out the knife falls under California’s Dirk and Dagger law and is a felony if the officer had so chosen to charge me. It also falls under L.A. Cities Dirk and Dagger laws. I felt lucky that day and would consider getting something that falls short of the law. It’s not worth the head ache in the long run. Oh, and the officer still gave me a ticket for no head lights. But, I smiled and drove away.
