Speaker Precautions

Placement

The speaker cabinets are made out of wood and aretherefore sensitive to extreme temperatures andhumidity, do not put them in locations subject to directsunlight or in humid places, such as near an air condi-

tioner, humidier, bathroom, or kitchen. Do not put water or other liquids close to the speakers.If liquid is spilled over the speakers, the drive unitsmay be damaged.

Speakers should only be placed on sturdy, at surfacesthat are free from vibration. Putting them on uneven orunstable surfaces, where they may fall and cause dam-age, will affect the sound quality.

The subwoofer should be used in the upright positiononly. Do not use it on its side or at an angle.

If the speakers are used near a turntable, CD player, orDVD player, howling or disc skipping may occur. Toprevent this, move the speakers away from the turnta-ble or player, or turn down the volume.

Using Close to a TV or Computer

TVs and computer monitors are magnetically sensitivedevices and as such are likely to suffer discoloration orpicture distortion when conventional speakers areplaced nearby. To prevent this, the SKF-960F andSKC-960C feature internal magnetic shielding. In somesituations, however, discoloration may still be an issue,in which case you should turn off your TV or monitor,wait 15 to 30 minutes, and then turn it back on again.This normally activates the degaussing function, whichneutralizes the magnetic eld, thereby removing anydiscoloration effects. If discoloration problems persist,try moving the speakers away from your TV or monitor.Note that discoloration can also be caused by a magnetor demagnetizing tool thats too close to your TV ormonitor.

Input Signal Warning

The speakers can handle the specied input power when

used for normal music reproduction. If any of the fol-lowing signals are fed to them, even if the input power iswithin the specied rating, excessive current may owin the speaker coils, causing burning or wire breakage:1. Interstation noise from an untuned FM radio.2. Sound from fast-forwarding a cassette tape.3. High-pitched sounds generated by an oscillator,

electronic musical instrument, and so on.4. Amplier oscillation.5. Special test tones from audio test CDs and so on.6. Thumps and clicks caused by connecting or discon-

necting audio cables (Always turn off your amplierbefore connecting or disconnecting cables.)

7. Microphone feedback.

B STANDBY indicator ( 41)Lights up when the AV receiver is on Standby andashes while a signal is being received from theremote controller.

Notes: If the remote controller doesnt work reliably, try

replacing the batteries. Dont mix new and old batteries or different types of

batteries. If you intend not to use the remote controller for a long

time, remove the batteries to prevent damage fromleakage or corrosion. Expired batteries should be removed as soon as possi-ble to prevent damage from leakage or corrosion.

When using the remote controller, point it toward the AVreceivers remote control sensor, as shown below.

Notes: The remote controller may not work reliably if the AV

receiver is subjected to bright light, such as direct sun-light or inverter-type uorescent lights. Keep this inmind when installing.

If another remote controller of the same type is used inthe same room, or the AV receiver is installed close toequipment that uses infrared rays, the remote control-ler may not work reliably.

Dont put anything on top of the remote controller,such as a book or magazine, because a button may bepressed continuously, thereby draining the batteries.

The remote controller may not work reliably if the AVreceiver is installed in a rack behind colored glassdoors. Keep this in mind when installing.

The remote controller will not work if theres an obsta-cle between it and the AV receivers remote controlsensor.

Speaker Set A: Main RoomFront left and right speakers (SKF-960F)These output the overall sound. Their role in a home theater is to pro-vide a solid anchor for the sound image. They should be positionedfacing the listener at about ear level, and equally spaced from the TV.Angle them inward.

Center speaker (SKC-960C)This speaker enhances the front

the keyhole slot shown to hang each speaker on a screwthats securely screwed into the wall.

Use screws with a head diameter of 5/16" (8 mm) or lessand a shank diameter of 5/32" (4 mm) or less. Read the following before connecting any speakers: Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet before

making any connections.

You can connect speakers with an impedance of8 ohms or higher. If you use speakers with a lowerimpedance, and use the amplier at high volume lev-els for a long period of time, the built-in protectioncircuit may be activated.

Pay close attention to speaker wiring polarity. In otherwords, connect positive (+) terminals to only positive(+) terminals, and negative () terminals to only nega-tive () terminals. If you get them the wrong wayaround, the sound will be out of phase and will soundunnatural.

Unnecessarily long, or very thin speaker cables mayaffect the sound quality and should be avoided.

Be careful not to short thepositive and negative wires.Doing so may damage the AVreceiver.

Dont connect more than onecable to each speaker termi-nal. Doing so may damage theAV receiver.

Dont connect one speaker to several terminals.

The AV receivers positive (+) speaker terminals and thespeakers positive (+) terminals are color-coded for easeof identication. (The negative () speaker terminals areall black.) Match the color of each cable to the corre-sponding speaker terminal.

Speaker Connection Precautions Connecting Speaker Set A

1 Strip 5/8" (15 mm) of insu-lation from the ends of thespeaker cables, and twistthe bare wires tightly.

2 On the AV receiver, loosen the terminals. Fullyinsert the bare wires, making sure that they touchthe threaded shaft. Screw the terminal tight.

3 On the speakers, loosenthe binding posts. Insertthe speaker wires intothe binding posts, thentighten the binding posts.

4 Using the supplied RCA cable, connect the AVreceivers SUBWOOFER PRE OUT jack to thesubwoofers LINE INPUT jack.Make sure the plug is pushed in all the way.

Connecting AntennasThis section explains how to connect the supplied indoorFM antenna and AM loop antenna, and how to connectcommercially available outdoor FM and AM antennas.The AV receiver wont pick up any radio signals withoutany antenna connected, so you must connect the antennato use the tuner.

The supplied indoor FM antenna is for indoor use only.

If you cannot achieve good reception with the suppliedindoor FM antenna, try a commercially available out-door FM antenna instead (seepage 24).

The supplied indoor AM loop antenna is for indoor useonly.

If you cannot achieve good reception with the suppliedindoor AM loop antenna, try using it with a commer-cially available outdoor AM antenna (seepage 24).

Notes: Outdoor FM antennas work best outside, but usable

results can sometimes be obtained when installed in anattic or loft.

For best results, install the outdoor FM antenna wellaway from tall buildings, preferably with a clear lineof sight to your local FM transmitter.

Outdoor antenna should be located away from possi-ble noise sources, such as neon signs, busy roads, etc.

For safety reasons, outdoor antenna should be situatedwell away from power lines and other high-voltageequipment.

Outdoor antenna must be grounded in accordancewith local regulations to prevent electrical shock haz-ards.

Using a TV/FM Antenna SplitterIts best not to use the same antenna for both FM and TVreception, as this can cause interference problems. If cir-cumstances demand it, use a TV/FM antenna splitter, asshown.

If good reception cannot be achieved using the suppliedAM loop antenna, an outdoor AM antenna can be used inaddition to the loop antenna, as shown.

Outdoor AM antennas work best when installed horizon-tally outside, but good results can sometimes be obtainedindoors by mounting horizontally above a window. Note

that the AM loop antenna should be left connected.Outdoor antenna must be grounded in accordance withlocal regulations to prevent electrical shock hazards.

Connecting Your Components

Before making any AV connections, read the manualssupplied with your other AV components.

Dont connect the power cord until youve completedand double-checked all AV connections.

Optical Digital Jacks

The AV receivers optical digital jacks have shutter-typecovers that open when an optical plug is inserted andclose when its removed. Push plugs in all the way.

Caution: To prevent shutter damage, hold the opticalplug straight when inserting and removing.

AV Connection Color Coding

RCA-type AV connections are usually color coded: red,white, and yellow. Use red plugs to connect right-channel audio inputs and outputs (typically labeled R).Use white plugs to connect left-channel audio inputs and

outputs (typically labeled L). And use yellow plugs toconnect composite video inputs and outputs.

Push plugs in all the way to makegood connections (loose connec-tions can cause noise or malfunc-tions).

To prevent interference, keepaudio and video cables away frompower cords and speaker cables.

By connecting both the audio and video outputs of your DVD player and other AV components to the AV receiver, youcan switch the audio and video signals simultaneously simply by changing the input source on the AV receiver.

The AV receiver supports several connection formats for compatibility with a wide range of AV equipment. The formayou choose will depend on the formats supported by your other components. Use the following sections as a guide.For video components, you must make an audio connection and a video connection.

Audio Connection Formats

Audio equipment can be connected to the AVreceiver by using any of the following audioconnection formats: analog, optical, coaxial,

analog multichannel, or HDMI.When you connect a component to an HDMI,OPTICAL, or COAXIAL input, you mustassign that input to an input selector (see page47).

When choosing a connection format, bear inmind that the AV receiver does not convert dig-ital input signals for analog line outputs andvice versa. For example, audio signals con-nected to an optical or coaxial digital input are

not output by the analog TAPE OUT.If signals are present at more than one input,the inputs will be selected automatically in the following order of priority: HDMI, digital, analog (including multichanel). You can specify which audio inputs the AV receiver checks for the presence of a signal in theAutomatic AudioInput Selection Setup on page 49.

Video Connection Formats

Video equipment can be connected to the AVreceiver by using any one of the followingvideo connection formats: composite video,S-Video, component video, or HDMI, the lat-

ter offering the best picture quality.Video input signals ow through the AVreceiver as shown, with composite video, S-Video, and component video sources all beingupconverted for the HDMI output.The composite video, S-Video, and componentvideo outputs pass through their respectiveinput signals as they are.When you connect a component to an HDMIor COMPONENT VIDEO input, you mustassign that input to an input selector (see pages46and47).If signals are present at more than one input,the inputs will be selected automatically in thefollowing order of priority: HDMI, componentvideo, S-Video, composite video. However, forcomponent video only, regardless of whether acomponent video signal is actually present, if acomponent video input is assigned to the inputselector, that component video input will beselected. And if no component video input isassigned to the input selector, this will be inter-

preted as no component video signal beingpresent.In the Auto Signal Selection Example shownon the right, video signals are present at boththe composite video and S-Video inputs, how-ever, the S-Video signal is automaticallyselected as the source and video is output bythe S-Video and HDMI outputs.

For optimal video performance, THX recommends that video signals pass through the system without upconver-sion (e.g., component video input through to component video output). Its also recommended that you set theImmediate Display preference to Off ( page 87 ).

The onscreen setup menus appear only on a TV that is connected to the HDMI OUT. If your TV is connected to thecomposite video or S-Video MONITOR OUT, or the COMPONENT VIDEO OUT, use the AV receivers own displaywhen changing settings.

About HDMI

Designed to meet the increased demands of digital TV, HDMI (High Denition Multimedia Interface) is a new digitinterface standard for connecting TVs, projectors, DVD players, set-top boxes, and other video components. Until noseveral separate video and audio cables have been required to connect AV components. With HDMI, a single cable cacarry control signals, digital video, and up to eight channels of digital audio (2-channel PCM, multichannel digitalaudio, or multichannel PCM).The HDMI video stream (i.e., video signal) is compatible with DVI (Digital Visual Interface),*1 so TVs and displayswith a DVI input can be connected by using an HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable. (This may not work with some TVs andisplays, resulting in no picture.)The AV receiver uses HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection), so only HDCP-compatible components wdisplay a picture.

About Copyright Protection

The AV receiver supports HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection),*2 a copy-protection system for digitalvideo signals. Other devices connected to the AV receiver via HDMI must also support HDCP.Use a commercially available HDMI cable (supplied with some components) to connect the AV receivers HDMI OUto the HDMI input on your TV or projector.

*1 DVI (Digital Visual Interface): The digital display interface standard set by the DDWG*3 in 1999.*2 HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection): The video encryption technology developed by Intel for HDMI/DVI. Its designed

Video SignalsDigital video signals received by the HDMI IN jacks are normally output by the HDMI OUT for display on your TV.Composite video, S-Video, and component video sources are upconverted and, depending on the resolution of your TV,upscaled for output by the HDMI OUT. See Video Connection Formats on page 27 and theVideo Resolution Charton page 107 for more information. Audio SignalsDigital audio signals received by the HDMI IN jacks are output by the speakers and headphones connected to the AVreceiver. Normally, they are not output by the HDMI OUT.

To listen to audio received by the HDMI IN jacks through your TVs speakers, set theAudio TV Out setting to On (seepage 90), and set your DVD players HDMI audio output setting to PCM.

Notes: The HDMI video stream is compatible with DVI (Digital Visual Interface), so TVs and displays with a DVI input can

be connected by using an HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable. (Note that DVI connections only carry video, so youll needto make a separate connection for audio.) However, reliable operation with such an adapter is not guaranteed. Inaddition, video signals from a PC are not supported.

To listen to an HDMI source component through the AV receiver, you must congure your system so that video fromthe HDMI source component can be displayed on your TV (i.e., on your TV, select the HDMI input thats connectedto the AV receivers HDMI OUT). This is necessary because a component identication check has to be performed

on your TV before an HDMI source component can output any signals. If your TV is off or set to a different inputsource, the AV receiver may produce no sound or the sound may be distorted. The HDMI audio signal (sampling rate, bit length, etc.) may be restricted by the connected source component. If the

picture is poor or theres no sound from a component connected via HDMI, check its setup. Refer to the connectedcomponents instruction manual for details.

Step 1: Use HDMI cables to connect the AV receivers HDMI jacks to your HDMI-compatible DVD player, TV,projector, and so on.

With (Remote Interactive), you can use the following special functions:

Auto Power On/StandbyWhen you start playback on a component connected via , if the AV receiver is on Standby, it will automatically turon and select that component as the input source. Similarly, when the AV receiver is set to Standby, all componentsconnected via will also go on Standby.

Direct ChangeWhen playback is started on a component connected via , the AV receiver automatically selects that component athe input source. If your DVD player is connected to the AV receivers DVD IN (multichannel input), youll need topress the [MULTI CH] button repeatedly and select Multich to hear all of the channels (seepage 50), as the DirectChange function selects only the DVD IN FRONT L/R jacks.

Remote ControlYou can use the AV receivers remote controller to control your other -capable Onkyo components. You must entethe appropriate remote control code rst (seepage 93). And remember to point the remote controller at the AV receiverand not the other component.

Notes: Use only cables for connections. cables

are supplied with Onkyo players (DVD, CD, etc.).

Some components have two jacks. You can con-nect either one to the AV receiver. The other jack isfor connecting additional -capable components.

Connect only Onkyo components to jacks. Con-necting other manufacturers components may causea malfunction.

Some components may not support all functions.Refer to the manuals supplied with your other Onkyocomponents.

Before connecting the power cord, connect all of your speakers and AV components. Plug the end of the power cord into a suitable wall outlet. Turning on the AV receiver may cause a momentary power surge that might interfere with other electrical equipme

on the same circuit. If this is a problem, plug the AV receiver into a different branch circuit.

Connecting Onkyo Components

Step 1: Make sure that each Onkyo component is connected to the AV receiver with an analog audio cable (RCA).Step 2: Make the necessary connections (see illustration below).

Step 3: If you connect a MiniDisc recorder, CD recorder, or RI Dock, change the Input Display (seepage 48).
