AUGUST BOOK CLUB REVIEW 2016.
THE CITY OF DREAMING BOOKS BY WALTER
MOERS.
Optimus Yarnspinner, a young writer, inherits from his beloved godfather an unpublished short story by an unknown author. His search for the author's identity takes him to Bookholm--the so-called City of Dreaming Books. On entering its streets, our hero feels as if he has opened the door of a gigantic
second-hand bookshop. His nostrils are assailed by clouds of book dust, the stimulating scent of ancient leather, and the tang of printer's ink. Soon, though, Yarnspinner falls into the clutches of the city's evil genius, Pfistomel Smyke, who treacherously maroons him in the labyrinthine catacombs underneath the city, where reading books can be genuinely dangerous. This book was Marnie’s choice recommended by someone in Hannes’s family. So on a freezing Monday night three of us ventured to Marnie’s plus one visitor, where some lovely mulled wine waited us. Just the thing for such a cold wet night.. Of the four book club members 2 had read the book and the other two battled on for a couple of pages but gave up. Roz said the action didn’t start until 200 pages in. All members felt that a book should grab you in the first couple of pages. There were some funny bits in the book but mostly it was boring with lots of made up words. We felt it would make a good scary kids movie. Then we got down to the best bit of Book Club…….setting the world to rights.
Thank you Marnie for a lovely night and supper.
The next book club is my choice and will be held on Monday the 12th
September.
