GUEST-OF-HONOUR

TEO SER LUCKMinister of State,Ministry of Trade and Industry

Courage, perseverance and adaptability are all needed for an entrepreneur to succeed. Every year, we gather here at the spirit of Enterprise (soE) awards, now in its 11th year, to honour those who are inspirational examples of these qualities in action.

the achievements of the soE award winners are a testament to the ability of our local entrepreneurs to seize opportunities, innovate in the face of adversity, and build sustainable businesses that contribute to the vibrancy of the business community. our entrepreneurs play a crucial role in our society and economy, by injecting dynamism into the economy and driving change for the better.

Even as we celebrate the achievements of the award winners here today,

we should also recognise those who have helped them along the way. no man is an island, and entrepreneurs do not succeed alone. we should recognise the important role that family, friends, and colleagues play in the achievements of our entrepreneurs. organisations such as the sprit of Enterprise, by shaping the entrepreneurship ecosystem and providing opportunities for entrepreneurs to come together and network, also play an important part in creating an environment that breeds success.

in closing, i would like to congratulate all the award winners here today. i hope that winning this award will spur you on to greater deeds, and inspire those around you to follow in your footsteps.

through the decade that spirit of Enterprise has been around, we have always reached for greater heights and bigger possibilities, focusing on getting our message to more people.

in every company, there is a story to be told.

Every company exists because of a dream, and entrepreneurs are the dreamweavers who orchestrate these dreams. in every company, people with many different talents come together to perform their parts.

those who work for entrepreneurs look to you as their conductor. as an entrepreneur, you can be someone people look up to. that is what it truly means to be a part of soE.

But what is spirit of Enterprise? it is about entrepreneurs both past and future, it is a symphony written both by them and for them. we are all volunteers here. we do this because entrepreneurship is both our passion and our task.

i was a very shy person. when i won my own soE award, it inspired not only me, but all my staff. it inspired me to continue on my own journey, to realise that it didn’t end there. soE gave my company and i a platform.

how do we do more for our honourees? we offer them more networking opportunities, more contact with others, and bring a community element to what is often misconstrued as an adversarial relationship with other companies. we want to build a network of familiar faces at events and change peoples’ assumptions about entrepreneurship. we want you to see us as family.

and we are not alone in this journey, thanks to our friends of soE, companies

THOMAS FERNANDEZCEO, PestBusters

like nexia ts and CharlEs & KEith, whose faith and generous sponsorship have allowed us all to continue to believe in the soE award. we also thank our past honourees and board members for their support and belief in furthering this tradition.

we started somewhere and are getting somewhere. through the decade that spirit of Enterprise has been around, we have always reached for greater heights and bigger possibilities, focusing on getting our message to more people. likewise, we encourage you all to leave a legacy behind.

this is your time, these are your achievements. this is the story of soE.

“Every company exists because of a dream, and entrepreneurs are the dreamweavers who orchestrate these dreams.

its unique system of nomination and firsthand journalistic inquiry places much-needed emphasis on the opinions and perspectives of young aspiring entrepreneurs.

as a non-profit organisation with an overarching social aim, soE awards honourees selected through student nominations and a structured interview process. Both of these allow our student interviewers to determine for themselves which qualities held by entrepreneurs most greatly exemplify the spirit of Enterprise. in turn, inspiring entrepreneurs

are given a mentorship platform from which they can share their personal experiences with the young and represent the diversity of experiences in the entrepreneurial landscape in singapore.

Giving a voice to youth from the ground-up, the soE awards encourages potential entrepreneurs to speak to the kinds of influential sME leadership that continue to serve as deep and powerful inspirations in a local context.

the SoE awards represents a paradigm shifttowards the recognition of entrepreneurialtalent by the entrepreneurs of tomorrow.

Spirit of Enterprise Awards Every year, around a hundred entrepreneurs are nominated and interviewed by university and polytechnic students. the annual soE awards in november celebrates these honoured sMEs’ achievements.

The SOE Book this annual book of stories and practical entrepreneurship guidance based on interviews with the soE awards nominees is distributed to local schools in singapore. it is also available at leading bookstores and public libraries.

SOE Student Entrepreneur Programme sEp is an soE-sponsored programme that walks primary and secondary school students through entrepreneurship basics with life lessons and simulated business activities that are led by successful local entrepreneurs who are invited to share their life stories as part of the programme as well.

Mentorship Programme our mentors guide and advise students on relevant school projects, such as the Business plan Competition nus start-up@singapore initiative.

Speakers Series soE collaborates with the national library Board and tertiary institutions to organise talks for students and the general public to inspire budding entrepreneurs.

SOE Fundraising Golf Challenge the annual Golf Challenge helps to raise funds for soE and provides excellent opportunities for sMEs to network with other professionals and entrepreneurs.

Looking Back on More Than a Decade of Anchoring Entrepreneurship in Singapore

when founding president russell Miller established spirit of Enterprise, he did so with one goal in mind: to give smaller companies a chance to showcase their unique entrepreneurial angle.

spirit of Enterprise is a non-profit organisation that promotes and advances entrepreneurial spirit in singapore by honouring self-reliant entrepreneurs operating small and medium-sized businesses locally. soE also seeks to inspire the young to become entrepreneurs by facilitating interaction, communication, and knowledge dissemination between students, entrepreneurs, and the general public.

soE is funded by the private sector and managed by a Board of Governors, volunteers who dedicate time and effort to entrepreneurship in singapore. our board members are established entrepreneurs, corporate senior management, civil

servants, and political leaders. they are people around us, who have dared to take it one step further, not content to follow, but insistent on striking out on their own.

like them, the soE awards is not just another award. it is a way of connecting companies and the entrepreneurs who continue to do innovative, independent work with society. Entrepreneurs can be contemporary heroes. we want to tell their stories, share their difficulties and victories – all real, all hard won – with tomorrow’s entrepreneurs. we can, and will, inspire others in their own journeys to realise what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur.

this is why soE is evolving even today, 10 years down the road from when we first began, building on what has been done by thought leaders over previous years. it is notable that in the early days, many of our student Entrepreneur programme partner schools were neighbourhood schools and that there was less government support for such programmes at that time.

WHaT DOES IT mEaN TO HONOUR aND INSPIRE? IN OUR 11TH

yEaR, WE lOOk back ON WHaT DRIvES US IN OUR cONTINUING mISSION TO DO all THIS aND mORE.

Page 13: ONG TZE BOON

11

in developing many of our school programmes, soE had at-risk youths in mind. soE believed that if these young people could become business owners themselves, and experience all that goes with such responsibilities, the young would be set on the right track. we encourage diversity and greater efforts in volunteering. sMEs can play a big role too, retaining talent that can support their future endeavours.

the soE awards is not just our way of honouring those who have demonstrated exemplary leadership, but is a platform where you too can inspire others. Many honourees have found great enthusiasm in giving back and have agreed to be part of soE for this reason. Yet others nominate peers for the award. Given that the soE awards has always been by nomination, soE too, continues to be inspired by our local community of entrepreneurs’ mutual admiration and generosity of spirit.

though our cause may seem to be a businessman’s cause, soE has always been about seeing, identifying, and celebrating potential. Join us, as we continue to honour and inspire the spirit of Enterprise in all of us at the soE awards 2013.

from training and the entrepreneurs and volunteers whom they meet. in 2013, sEp reached out to over 200 children – a number that soE hopes to raise by another 20 to 30 per cent in the coming year.

during Meet the Entrepreneur sessions, mentors and students openly discuss values and difficulties in a relaxed and supportive environment. they engage in social interaction, team building, and games. for children from families in need, this is especially illuminating in showing the possibilities in following their own entrepreneurial journeys.

soE too, has many dreams for sEp: developing the curriculum to emphasise innovation lessons, having more entrepreneurs participate, and offering more diverse perspectives on business and other life skills.

such two-way experiences between mentors and students are the kinds of partnerships soE would like to explore, in addition to more partners and classes in general, so that our entrepreneurial message can reach a wider audience.

in the meantime, sEp continues to receive many word-of-mouth recommendations from children to their friends. school principals have also been generous with their testimonials. as these seeds germinate and our numbers grow, we will continue to inspire future generations of entrepreneurs, writing new stories in the process.

let’s face it: Everyone loves a good yarn.

the soE student Entrepreneur programme (sEp) offers young people real-life stories straight from the source, imparting entrepreneurial as well as life skills from an entrepreneur’s perspective, teaching the young to live positively.

for the young and entrepreneurial minded, the notion of working with MnCs tends to prevail. for this reason, soE offers an alternative – sMEs – especially for those who are interested in starting their own companies.

sEp answers a larger question: how can entrepreneurship contribute to society? partnerships with Voluntary welfare organisations (Vwo) give youths at risk the tools to rise above their circumstances. these students learn
