Welcome to oneBeat aBQ!516 ARTS is excited to team up with Found Sound Nation to present this totally unique, international, one-time event. Albuquerque native and Found Sound Na-tion Co-Founder Christopher Marianetti came to 516 ARTS to propose that we present OneBeat ABQ together, and I am so happy that we were able to jump on this spectacular opportunity to connect Albuquerque with the rest of the world.

Thanks to funding from the U.S. State Department and others, we are the lucky host community for the culmination of the third year of the remarkable OneBeat fellowship program, an adventurous new model of cultural diplomacy. Hailing from Egypt to Venezuela, this year’s fellows include DJs, traditional instrumental-ists, experimenters, indie-rockers and more. A note to 516 ARTS from the State Department said, “As Secretary of State John Kerry said to a group of young Af-ghan musicians; ‘music is the international language of peace and of possibilities and dreams.’ OneBeat fosters mutual understanding and provides the possibility for more dreams.”

OneBeat’s interest in incorporating visual art and community into their culminat-ing event in Albuquerque made it a great fit for 516 ARTS. We are so pleased to be working with Albuquerque artist Billy Joe Miller as the curator of You Are the Doorway, the one-night art exhibition for OneBeat ABQ, together with the One-Beat directors and all the local partners who helped make OneBeat ABQ possible!

OneBeat is more than a music festival or simple cultural exchange; it is an incubator for new forms of musical expression, a hatchery for novel ways to use music as a tool for the betterment of our communities, and ever-growing web of interconnected artists and changemakers from Albuquerque to Colombia to Zimbabwe.

onEBEat 2014

OneBeat is an incubator for music-based social entrepreneurship, where innovative musicians from around the world launch collaborative projects designed to make a positive impact on local and global communities. An initiative of the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs in collaboration with the groundbreaking New York-based music organization Bang on a Can’s Found Sound Nation, OneBeat employs collaborative music creation as a potent new form of cultural diplomacy.

The November 1st performance, titled The Audible Invisible, is the finale of the OneBeat 2014 Western tour. It is a unique, multimedia show designed for the Albuquerque Rail Yards. The theme explores finding sonic expression for the invisible powers that affect us, from gravity to electromagnetism to culture. Wedged between Halloween and Día de Los Muertos, this event explores concepts of Spirit, one of the great invisible human universals.

During their brief time in Albuquerque, the OneBeat Fellows have led a workshop at the National Hispanic Cultural Center as part of their Día de los Muertos activities, worked with students at Health Leadership High School, held a meet & greet reception at 516 ARTS, done an improv session with local musicians and dancers at Sister Bar, and worked with youth and families at Working Classroom to build percussion instruments out of what might otherwise be considered trash. This band of glorious DIY noise will march with the rest of Working Classroom in the marigolds & muertos Parade on Sunday, november 2 in the South valley.

Shereen Abdo is a vocalist, activist and key figure in an emerging Cairo folk music scene. Her diverse musical interests have led her to develop a hybrid style incorporating both traditional folk and contemporary experimentation.

Sanaya arDEShirProducer, Synth Player / india

Sanaya Ardeshir (a.k.a. Sandunes) is a Mumbai-based producer, activist, composer & synth player. She blends elements of jazz, dubstep and London electronica with South Asian influences.

alEx aShErtrombonist, Songwriter / USa

Known for his Grammy-award winning work with Beyoncé Knowles as well as playing in numerous Brooklyn bands, trombonist and composer Alex Asher leads People’s Champs, a seven-piece ensemble in NYC.

DahlaK BrathWaitE Songwriter, Producer / USa

A multi-faceted hip-hop artist, Dahlak Brathwaite maximizes his abilities as a musician, actor, poet and educator within the transformational space of the theater. He co-founded the collective iLL-Literacy, which blends hip-hop, theatre and spoken word.

BlESSing Chimanga Drummer, marimba Player / Zimbabwe

Blessing Chimanga is a 23-year-old percussionist and singer from Zimbabwe. A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, he co-founded the Let the Drums Speak Festival, to engage his local community and showcase developing talent in Zimbabwe.

nEil ChUaruan Player / malaysia

Neil Chua is an award-winning Klang-based Ruan player. Neil is the first Malaysian musician to earn a prestigious Master’s degree specializing in traditional ruan from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.

EStEBan CoPEtEmarimba & Sax Player / Colombia

Growing up in el Chocó, Esteban Copete became fascinated with the preservation and evolution of indigenous culture, while teaching himself traditional instruments, like marimba de chonta.

roman garKavEnKo Bassist / Ukraine

Roman Garkavenko (a.k.a. Romanica) plays in indie-rock band 5 Vymir (“Fifth Dimension”), which has garnering acclaim both in the Ukraine and abroad, as well as the math-rock outfit Scheiße Surprise.

maria FErnanDa gonZalEZ Bandola llander Player / venezuela

Maria Fernanda Gonzalez is a multi-instrumentalist and journalist. After years of studying cuatro, mandolin and violin, she decided to take up the bandola llanera, an obscure Venezuelan instrument.

aBDEllah m haSSaKProducer, Bassist / morocco

Abdellah M. Hassak (a.k.a. Dubosmium) from Casablanca, creates off-kilter beats and “electroworld atmosphere” by sampling and warping local sounds.

FiDEl KiliCvocalist, Composer / turkey

Fidel Kilic began performing at an early age. In Istanbul he began learning the vocal traditions of Kurdistan, the Balkans, and Georgia and was featured on Karde Türküler’s 2011 Grammy nominated album.

Lara Klaus is a Recife, Brazil-based percussionist and educator. Lara focuses on traditional percussion such as pandeiro, alfaia, zabumba, along with the rhythms of Northeast Brazil.

Barry Likumahuwa is a bass player from Jakarta, Indonesia. Currently, he is the leader of BLP, a contemporary jazz group incorporating hip-hop and traditional West Javanese, Moluccan & Balinese sounds.

hayDéE lóPEZ PEñaFlutist / Cuba

Haydée López Peña is a flutist, vocalist and producer. She attended the renowned Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, where she studied flute performance along with music education and music therapy.

Sara lUCaSvocalist, guitarist / USa

Sara Lucas is a New York-based singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer. As founder and co-bandleader of Callers, a collaborative project with composer/producer/guitarist Ryan Seaton, she has toured Europe and North America.

BongEZiWE maBanDlaSinger Songwriter / South africa

Bongeziwe Mabandla is a vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter who croons velvety Xhosa in a style he calls “urban traditional African folk music.” His music explores themes of inequality facing South Africa.

hoPE maSiKEmbira Player, vocalist / ZimbabweHope Masike is a Zimbabwe-born mbiraand percussion player, singer and dancer.One of Hope’s greatest motivations isthe desire to push traditional mbira, aninstrument labelled ‘demonic’ duringZimbabwe’s colonial era, into new andcontemporary spaces.

ahmED moorEaoud Player / iraq

Ahmed Moorea is a 24-year-old oud player and composer from Baghdad. A self-taught musician, he studied accounting and economics at Baghdad College while watching and practicing oud prodigiously.

PEni CanDra riniSinger, Composer / indonesia

Peni Candra Rini is an accomplished composer, educator and one of the few female contemporary vocalists performing the sindhen style of singing.

Anna Roberts-Gevalt is a Baltimore-based fiddle player and educator. She has worked extensively on multi-faceted performances that include storytelling, ornate harmonies, puppetry and traditional craft.

Camilo Rodriguez is a Queens, New York-based guitarist and percussionist. Originally from Colombia, he founded the genre-defying M.A.K.U. Soundsystem.

DaniEla SErnaPercussionist, Composer / Colombia

Daniela Serna is a Bogotá-based composer, percussionist and sound artist. As both a performer and an educator, she has worked in traditional Colombian cumbia, porro, fandgo and currulao music styles, as well as global rock and pop.

alExanDEr ShirUnovaccordionist / russia

After his father presented him with a small accordion at the age of four, he fell in love. A prizewinner of more than 15 international competitions, he has toured around the world performing concerts and leading workshops.

As the violinist and backing singer for Freshlyground, one of South Africa’s premiere Afropop bands, Kyla-Rose Smith has toured both locally and internationally. She is also an emerging multi-media artist with an eye toward social engagement and community building.

Askat Jetigen Uulu is a Bishkek-based Komuz player and composer. At only 20, he has established himself as a prodigious performer and prolific organizer. He currently serves as musical director for Ordo Sakhna.

You Are the Doorway is a series of installations exploring the concepts of spirit, thresholds and the invisible powers that guide us.

I recently watched the film Joe vs. The Volcano (1990) again. Joe finds out that he only has a little time to live before he will die from a rare disease. He suddenly sees life differently and decides to make the most of it. During an epiphany at a restaurant with an awkward date, he exclaims to her “The doorway to the universe is you!”

The artists selected for You Are the Doorway invite the audience to activate a path of interactive portals, doorways and liminal spaces that share many different perspectives on death and transformation, and allow the spectator to become a participant in the artwork. They do this through a wide range of painted surfaces, highly crafted objects, knitting looms, natural materials, video and performance.

What better place to consider this perennial question than in the vast Blacksmith Shop at the Albuquerque Rail Yards? Its history and long period of abandonment make it a haunting space. Trains conjure points of departure, crossroads and portals and the spectre of their presence lends power to this fleeting, four hour event.

Lea received her education from the University of New Mexico, earning a BFA in 2008 and a MFA in 2014. Her work has been exhibited at museums and galleries throughout the region. She currently teaches at Santa Fe Community College.

Ellen Babcock draws inspiration from landscapes and a panoply of scavenged or re-used materials to create sculptures and installations. She is Assistant Professor of Sculpture at the University of New Mexico and the founding director of Friends of the Orphan Signs.

Corvas Kent Brinkerhoff seeks to capture and express interior spaces of being. He works with light, paint, sound and computer programming to capture fragments of consciousness abstracted and frozen in time.

Cameron Crow is an artist, activist, community builder and wanderer. His work explores themes of impermanence and interconnection. In his sculptures, he utilizes natural materials, gathered locally, and invites us to reexamine our relationship with the Earth as humans.

Temujin is a children’s book illustrator and filmmaker based in London. His drawing work is stylistically detailed, often displaying a fondness for historical subjects and nonsense, whilst his film

William FEEnEy Encinitas, California

William Feeney’s art is about the intersection of the individual and the institution – the place where things are exposed, negotiated and solved. His work is about questions, even when it implies answers.

Video artist Jackson Glasgow grew up in Albuquerque and got to know the city and his community by skating. His desire to capture skate culture turned into a video career, which is now focused on music videos and multimedia projects.

Cedra Wood received her BA in Fine Arts from Austin College, and her MFA in Painting & Drawing from the University of New Mexico. She currently lives and works in Albuquerque.

Karen Hipscher earned an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts. She uses photography and moving images to explore the space between organic and ethereal, working with layered reflection, light-phenomena, dreams and the unknown.

The multimedia collective Line/Assembled is a collaboration founded in 2014 by three artists based in Berlin, Florida and New Mexico. Their

work focuses on multichannel video installations as rhythmic explorations of the most basic conditions of human beings and everyday life.

Lance Ryan McGoldrick an assemblage and installation artist who is inspired by pattern and geometry. He works with wood and familiar discarded materials to create grand interactive sculptures that sometimes light up.

Edie is an artist, writer and activist who explores intimacy and identity. Her projects take the form of written pieces, audio, objects, installation, interactive projects, conversations and performances.

With familiar materials and techniques, Michelle Montjoy makes objects and images that employ absurdity, obsessiveness and abnormal juxtapositions. Her work focuses on suburban tropes, personal failings and political paradoxes.

Augustine Romero was born and raised in Pueblo, Colorado where he received a BA in Graphic Design at the University of Southern Colorado. He received an MFA from New York University, and taught Product Design at Parsons School of Design.

The mission of the Arts, Research, Technology and Science Laboratory at the University of New Mexico is to bring together people with diverse backgrounds and viewpoints in order to forge new paths of inquiry and expression across the humanities and sciences. ARTS Lab drives and supports innovative transdisciplinary research relating to new trends and opportunities in media production, gaming, computer graphics and interactive applications.
