It was an old, old, old, old lady And a boy that was half past three;
And the way that they played together Was beautiful to see.
She couldn’t go romping and jumping, And the boy no more could he; For he was a thin little fellow
With a thin little twisted knee.
They sat in the yellow sunlight Out under the maple tree;
And the game they played I’ll tell you, Just as it was told to me.
It was hide-and-go-seek they were playing, Though you’d never have known it to be—
With an old, old, old, old lady, And a boy with a twisted knee.
“You are in the china closet!” He would laugh and cry with glee—
It wasn’t the china closet,
But he still had Two and Three.
“You are up in Papa’s big bedroom, In the chest with the queer old key!”
And she said, “You are warm and warmer; But you’re not quite right,” said she.
“It can’t be the little cupboard Where Mama’s things used to be—
So it must be in the clothespress, Gran’ma!” And he found her with his Three.
Then she covered her face with her fingers That were wrinkled and white and wee,
And she guessed where the boy was hiding With a One and a Two and a Three.
And they never had stirred from their places Right under the maple tree— This old, old, old, old lady,
And the boy with the lame little knee— This dear, dear, dear, old lady
And the boy who was half past three.

** I believe that if anything is worth doing, it
would have been done already.

SEPTEMBER ANNIVERSARIES
It’s a funny thing that when a man hasn’t anything on earth to worry about, he goes off and gets married. ~~Robert Frost
This was written by an 83 year old… hope-
fully, the rest of us will start before 83 or
have already started.
Dear Friend,
I’m reading more and dusting less.
I’m sitting in the yard and admiring the view
without fussing about the weeds in the gar-
den.
I’m spending more time with my family and
friends and less time working.
I’m not ‘saving’ anything; we use our good china and crystal for every special event; such as losing a pound, getting the sink un-
stopped, or the first Amaryllis blossom. I’m not saving my good perfume for special
parties, but wearing it for clerks in the hard-
ware store and tellers at the bank.
I’m trying very hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything that would add
laughter and luster to our lives.
‘Someday and one of these days’ are losing their grip on my vocabulary. If there is an activity worth seeing or hearing or doing, I
want to see and hear and do it now.
I wear my good blazer to the market. My theory is if I look prosperous, I can shell out
$28.49 for one small bag of groceries.
Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experiences to savor, not to endure. I’m
trying to recognize (Continued on the next page)

NOODLE DOODLES Each frame stands for a well-known saying, person, place or thing. Answers are in the box next to the puzzles.
QUOTEFALLS: Fit the letters in each vertical column into the squares directly below them to form words reading across only. The letters do not necessarily go in the same order in which they are given. Each
given letter will be used once. A black square indicates the end of a word. Words starting at the end of a line may continue in the next line. The completed quotations are on the right side.

these moments now and cher-
ish them.
I’m not sure what others would’ve done had they known
they wouldn’t be here for the tomorrow that we all take for granted. I think they would
have called family members and a few close friends. They
might have called a few former friends to apologize and mend fences for past squabbles. I
like to think they would have gone out for a Chinese dinner
or for whatever their favorite food was. I’m guessing: I’ll
never know.
It’s those little things left un-done that would make me an-gry if I knew my hours were
limited. Angry because I had-n’t written certain letters that I
intended to write one of these
days.
I don’t believe in Miracles. I
rely on them.
Life may not be the party we
hoped for, but while we are
here we might as well dance.
Today was the absolute worst day ever
And don’t try to convince me that
There’s something good in every day
Because, when you take a closer look,
This world is a pretty evil place.
Even if
Some goodness does shine through once in a while
Satisfaction and happiness don’t last.
And it’s not true that
It’s all in the mind and heart
Because
True happiness can be obtained
Only if one’s surroundings are good
It’s not true that good exists
I’m sure you can agree that
The reality
Creates
My attitude
It’s all beyond my control
And you’ll never in a million years hear me say that
Today was a good day.
Now read from bottom to top.
Thank you to Jess for sending this to me!!

Grandparents Day, September 13th.
Nobody can do for little children what grandpar-
ents do. Grandparents sort of sprinkle stardust
over the lives of little children.
Grandchildren are God’s way of compensating us
for growing old.
SYMPATHY We would like to express our deepest sympathy to the families and friends of
Bev Peterson, Allen Wendler, and Rose Wichser who was 104 years old.
Schools will be opening
after Labor Day so
remember to watch out
for the kids.
