‘One Small Step for Man, One Giant Leap for Mankind’
This Saturday sees the 50th Anniversary of the first Moon landing. The Apollo 11 left earth on 16th July
1969 with 3 astronauts aboard, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. It took 76 hours for the
Apollo 11 to enter into a lunar orbit on July 19 th.
On 20th Armstrong and Aldrin in the lunar module
“Eagle”, separated from the command module
where Collins remained. Two hours later the Eagle
began its descent to the surface of the Moon, and at
4.17pm the craft touched down and Neil Armstrong
immediately radioed the Mission Control at
Houston, stating: “The Eagle has landed”
On 21st July the world watched Armstrong take the
first steps on the Moon with the now famous words
“that’s one small step for man, one giant leap for
mankind”.
Neil Armstrong died in 2012, but on Tuesday last
news programmes showed Buzz Aldrin and
Michael Collins meeting at the original launch pad of Apollo 11, and there commenced a
weeklong celebration to mark this moment in history.
I’ve always been interested in anything about space, so in 2001 while on holiday in Florida, the
highlight of the trip for me was a visit to the Kennedy Space Centre. It was just amazing. You
can see the Apollos and Shuttles, and are taken on a coach tour of the area which brings y ou out
near the launch pad. There is a piece of rock brought back from the Moon that you can touch.
The mission control centre which was used when
Apollo 13 got into trouble is on display. A
memorial at the centre bears the following
inscription dedicated to those who lost their lives:
“Whenever mankind has sought to conquer new
frontiers there have been those who have given
their lives for the cause.
This astronauts’ memorial dedicated May 9 1991
is a tribute to American men and women who
have made the ultimate sacrifice believing the
conquest of space is worth the risk of life” .
Cont’d over………
One Small Step cont’d…..
I bought a souvenir of the emblems of the
Apollos - at the Centre there are giant size
emblems of the Apollos and Shuttles on
view.
Ireland and the Moon Landing!
In August 1969 my family were on a
camping holiday in Doonbeg, Co Clare, and
while out walking one evening our father got
talking to a local farmer. The recent
unsettled weather was mentioned and the
farmer said it was all down ‘to them going
to the Moon’.
I can still see the image of the two so
clearly, leaning on a gate.
Maybe he was right!

Know Your Rights: Renewing your Passport There are a number of different ways to renew
your passport. You can renew your passport
online or by post or in person at a Passport
Office.
The Online Renewal Service takes about 10
working days to process your application, if all
your documents are in order. However, this does
not include the time it will take for your passport
to be delivered to you by post. An online renewal
application for a standard 10-year passport costs
€75.
You can submit a paper application using An
Post’s Passport Express service. It takes about 15
working days (if your application form is filled
in correctly and your documents are in order).
The application fee for a standard 10-year
passport using this service costs €89.50.
During busy periods, for example, during the
summer months, the Online Renewal Service and
Passport Express service can have longer turn-
around times. You can check current processing
times on the Passport Service website.
If you are due to travel in less than 3 weeks, you
can apply in person to the Passport Office in
Dublin or Cork. You can’t just drop-in, you need
to book an appointment online.
The Dublin Passport Office has a Rapid Renewal
Service for adults and children who need to
travel in less than 3 working days. This service
costs more. You can book an appointment for
this service online. If you cannot secure an
urgent appointment online you should contact the
Passport Service on (01) 671 1633.
The Passport Service recommends that you apply
for your passport renewal at least 6 weeks before
your planned travel date.

For the next 6-week period
our shed will be opening
only when requested by a
member; shedders can still
work on projects but
should make arrangements
for access with any
committee member. This will be the format until
Monday 2nd September.
This week we learned that our application to the
2019 Community Infrastructure Fund was
unsuccessful; we are naturally disappointed but
will learn from our efforts and apply again in
2020.
Our ground floor requires significant preparatory
works before being fitted out and equipped; we
aim to provide a high quality, safe workshop as
soon as we can purchase the necessary tools and
equipment. We continue to seek help and advice
from anybody with hands-on experience of
laying out or setting up a workshop. Lastly we
urge people who have power tools or hardwoods
they no longer use to consider gifting them to us
-we will make good use of any such donation.
Our next open, general meeting is on Monday
16th September; 18.30 to 19.50 in Lucan
Library. This meeting will allow the committee
deliver updates on key projects and our
Constitution review that is expected to be
completed at our 2019 AGM, in October 2019.
This meeting will also provide attendees with an
opportunity to voice their opinions and/or bring
forward suggestions. Member or not, if you have
an idea or suggestion you'd like to voice, come
along and share it with us.
We are contactable at our shed (rear of IWA
premises) or online at
FREE Five Week Basic iPhone, iPad, Tablet and Smartphone Class Commencing in Lucan Library on
Tuesday 17th September from
10:30 – 12:30.
If you would like to book a place
please enquire in the Library.
In 1881 the Lord Lieutenant and Permanent
Undersecretary were viciously assassinated in
the Phoenix Park, Dublin by a hitherto unknown
group calling themselves The Irish National
Invincibles. It was an event that resonated around
the world, horrified the British establishment and
changed the application of the law here.
Mícheál Ó Doibhilín, local historian and
publisher, will give an illustrated talk on these
assassinations, their consequences and the
ongoing campaign for justice for the five
Invincibles hanged as a result.
This is a rare opportunity to hear about a
forgotten but hugely important and pivotal
episode in the struggle to free Ireland from the
British Empire in the 19th century.
This illustrated talk will be on Weds 4th Sept
at 8pm in the Presbyterian Church -
admission is free.

Birdie was dizzy watching
all the sport last weekend,
between GAA and the

didn’t know what happened
it switching between TV
stations to see the different
games at the same time!
Great to see the Dubs do so well again – I know
some other team will win Sam in the future, but
not for a while yet – let’s enjoy it while it lasts!
Looking forward to the Rossies match this time –

Work on Swimming Pool started at long last –
wonder will it be ready for next summer!
Looks like we lost the Tennis Courts – were
they not being used these days? Time was when
kids spent weeks of their summer holidays on
those courts, particularly after watching
Wimbledon on telly.
One of our Readers, met this little fellow
crossing the road from Willo's B&B to the
Demesne Sunday night at 9.45 pm – Our little
Maidrín Rua is one of many in the area these
days.
Years ago, people associated foxes with hen-runs
and the like – they’d be after the chickens at
night, and there were lots of chickens around
Lucan up to the 1960s.
People brought up nearer the city associate them
more with scavenging!
We all learned An Maidrín Rua at school: "Good-morrow fox, " "Good-morrow, Sir." "Pray what is that you're eating?" It's a fine fat goose I stole from you, And will you come and taste it?"
Thanks for the photo, Frank!
Speaking of olden days in Lucan, the above
photo shows Tommy Smyth outside his
Shoemakers Shop on Main Street, back in the
1920s. We understand that the ladies looking out
the top windows are Tommy’s sisters.
Tommy took over the business from his father,
and was still working up to the late 60s, when
Tommy Kelly then took over the business.
Today, you can have a bowl of soup or cup of
coffee on the same spot where the cobbler plied
his trade! Just beside St. Andrew’s Church, the

"Grass is the cheapest plant
to install and the most expensive to maintain." - Pat Howell
Way back in 2005 – around the time all this
Wells for Zoë madness in Malawi took over
our lives – Mary read a piece from a book
The Secret. What I took from it was: if you
put everything into your passion, the
Universe conspires in enabling you to
succeed. The other day I looked up a Paulo
Coelho interview with Oprah Winfrey about
his book The Alchemist and just smiled.
In August last year we were in Dublin
Airport heading to Malawi on our 44th visit.
Our flight was called but when we went to
the boarding gate it had been delayed for 20
minutes. As we sat, we spoke to an English
woman from Zimbabwe who asked why we
were heading for Addis and what we were
doing. As we explained a Cork man heading
for South Africa was walking by, and he
stood, got involved and had questions as
well. He showed an interest in what we were
doing and our approach to development.
Soon enough we boarded and didn’t speak
again. When I looked at my laptop in Addis,
his wife had emailed to ask about making a
donation.
Earlier this year they drove as a family from
Cape Town to Cork in a jeep with the Wells
for Zoë logo in a prominent position and
checked in to our offices and pump factory
in Mzuzu on their way. In the last few days
he finally bought his super bike and will
cycle 12,000 km from Cairo to Capetown to
support our efforts in Malawi. I suspect
some type of conspiracy by the Universe!
Closer to home I picked up Mary’s sister
Breege, and her nine-year-old grandson
Diarmaid, at Heuston Station yesterday. As
we came to the roundabout heading for the
N4 he started:
“John, I see ye have a problem here… lots
of cars everywhere, putting CO2 into the
atmosphere… but we have another big
problem with cows in Roscommon. They
have methane and carbon dioxide coming
out both ends.”
I was not expecting such a response from a
nine-year-old and it left me a little shook. I
suggested that farmers grow grass and
meadows that absorb CO2 to lessen the
effect… “but no one grows enough trees” he
quickly added. He asked about electric cars;
I said OK, if the electricity is generated by
wind power. Instantly he advised me that the
use of solar power is also possible and
getting more efficient, and “what about
Hydrogen” he added. He asked if I was
planting trees and when I said yes, he
wanted to know how anyone could plant 2
million and could I do it in Roscommon to
which I replied: probably not. I was a little
dubious about students walking out of class
earlier this year, but now I am more positive
about their possible contribution to a change
in attitudes that might somehow save the day
for our planet; that is if there are more
Diarmaids around.
I told him that we work with the poorest of
the world in Malawi, explaining that sowing
trees will enable them to feed their families
who barely avoid starvation on a regular
basis. By sowing, caring for and eventually
selling coppicing trees they can look to a
better and more self-sufficient future without
dependence on AID. He asked if these poor
people realised the benefits to the climate,
and when I said yes, he asked how he could
help; AND HE IS JUST NINE YEARS
OLD.
I thought he should speak to the Dail and
Seanad. Like Felix Finkbeiner the nine-year-
old German boy who spoke to the UN in
2007 and started a youth organization, Plant
for the Planet, which has now planted 13.6
billion trees in over 160 countries, but
started out looking to plant 1 million in each.
We have just linked up with his expanded
group Trillion Tree Campaign, where we
have added our 2,200,000 trees from last
season and will later add our planned four
million trees as a target for the 2019-2020
season.
Children are not often asked to speak at the
UN, but Felix shook them with a simple
question on Climate change? Kids know,
adults know, and we all know the challenges
and the solution, so why is there so little
action? He suggested 3 possible reasons:
adults feel they will be dead before 2100 and
don’t care; then you have the Climate
Change denial types; or the age-old parable
situation that if you give monkeys the choice
of one banana now or six bananas later they
will always chose the one now.
“For us children, it’s a question of survival,”
he told global leaders. “We cannot trust that
adults alone will save our future. We have to
take our future in our own hands.”
So, 12 years later Felix and Plant for the
Planet has now changed their focus to
planting a trillion trees and Wells for Zoë
have joined him and them with our tiny –
but always growing – little contribution.
Remember the Cork man we met at the
airport? He has now bought a new super
bike from the UK, and in January next will
take on a huge challenge for Wells for Zoë;
that of cycling 12,000 km from Cairo to
Cape Town with our jersey on his back,
going through Malawi enroute.
If we think small, sponsorship for his cycle
could enable our Malawian communities to
plant 1.2 million trees next season or, we
could be brave (or even appropriately mad)
and go for 12 million over the next 4 years.
And we could succeed if the Universe were
to conspire again!
We can plant 100 trees for €10 or 1000 for
€100, with every tree having a miniscule but

Imagine that the million-to-one chance
meeting in Dublin Airport might conspire to
plant 12 million trees for the Universe.
I’m sure Diarmaid will be excited about this
project and get stuck in. So, are there more
bright nine-or ninety- year-olds out there
who want to believe in a future for our
planet?

“Not just at election time”
Application for apartments at Chapel Hill
junction: As mentioned on the neighbouring
estates' Facebook page, I am opposing
the application for 21 apartments over four
storeys on the Hillhouse site (beyond bollards
from Pieta House) and would recommend that
other local residents and elected reps do likewise.
A similar, more sympathetic application may be
suited to one or two village sites, but not at this
congested location with its various traffic and
pedestrian hazards, along with the overlooking of
neighbouring dwellings. It is gross over-
development of the site. The deadline for
submissions on this application (SD19A/0198) is
the 28th July.
Plastic in supermarkets and shops: A two-
pronged approach is needed to stop single use
plastics.
1) to enact legislation banning unnecessary
materials and
2) to let retailers know that you will actively seek
alternatives.

Lucan Swimming Pool: No doubt I’m not alone
in welcoming the news this week that works are
commencing in Griffeen Valley Park on the
construction of the New Lucan Swimming Pool
for Lucan. A huge community effort went into
seeing this day arrive and congrats to all.
Scrambler & Quad Bike task force must
prioritise New Legislation: After receiving new
information this week from Justice Minister,
Charlie Flanagan in relation to the illegal use of
scrambler and quad bikes; The cross-agency
taskforce is currently considering the formal
views from the Garda Commissioner on this
matter and I am urging them to prioritise
legislative change so as to combat this issue and
allow Gardaí to seize these bikes.

Transport Users The campaign for Lucan Luas will begin later
this year. In the meantime, we need to get the
city centre right for public transport. The city is
in a right mess at the moment with long delays to
the bus services passing through the centre. This
is causing undue hardship to users along the
Quays with many buses passing full making
public transport unreliable at
times.
We have put forward a plan to
address these difficulties.
A public information evening will be held in
Wynn's Abbey St next Tuesday 23rd of July
from 4pm until 8pm drop in at any time if your
passing to see our proposals the Quay Bus
Contraflow with an overall plan for the Greater
Dublin Area.

A second coming for a few of the more
established hurlers, they were dragged out of
retirement for a good win in the last Junior D
Championship group game. A high scoring affair
with the lads coming out on top which meant
they topped their Group and secured a home Qtr
Final. Well done to PJ and his management team.
Senior footballers lost away to Thomas Davis.
Jnr As lost out on Tuesday night by a single
point. Inter Ladies lost out to Castleknock in the
Cup, Jnr Ladies had a good win versus Fingal

Mark Lavin who played for the Dublin U20
footballers in a fine win against on Wexford and
we wish them luck as they prepare for a Leinster

weekend, best of luck and hopefully they can
turn it around vs Wexford this weekend, Lauren
Dawson, Phoebe Shannon, Sinead Daly, Millie
Reid and Lilly Rooney are all involved. Great to
hear Darren Gavin is getting back to full training
with the Dublin Senior footballers as they
prepare for the business end of the
Championship. Hard luck to Ali, Emma and Orla
who were part of the Dublin Senior Camogie
team that lost last weekend, also Chloe and Aoife
who lost to Westmeath with the Dublin Inter

losing.
