JULY 2015: Mother, Teacher, Family: Nature and the Role of the Church

The Church has institutional forms because she must work in the world. But that does not exhaust her essence. The Church is the Bride of Christ, a “she,” not an “it.” In the words of Saint John XXII, she is our mother and teacher, our comforter and guide, our family of faith. Even when her people and leaders sin, we still need the Church’s wisdom, Sacraments, support and proclamation of the truth, because she is the body of Jesus himself in the world; the family of God’s people writ large.

JOIN US FOR “HOLY HOUR” which will consist of Scripture reading, silent prayer, music, intercessions and personal testimonies. Thursdays at 7PM Ocean County: JULY 23, St. Joseph, Toms River Monmouth County: SEPT 3, Star of the Sea, Long Branch

Liturgical Season of Ordinary Time

On Monday May 25th, we re-entered the Liturgical Season of Ordinary Time during its 8th week. And we pick up where we left off early March just before Ash Wednesday and the Season of Lent followed by the Easter Season. Perhaps some insight might be in ‘order’?

Ordinary does not mean plain or mundane, it’s far from it! It’s ‘Tempus per annum’ or time throughout the year, or ‘ordinalis’, mean-ing numbered, and as you know, each week is sequentially numbered. This is the time of year outside of celebrations such as Easter and Christmas, a time to ‘grow’ in faith hence the ‘green’.

With Pentecost, the Birthday of the Church, still fresh in our mind, let’s grow heartily! Grow our Faith, grow Saint Mary Parish, and grow Christ’s Church!

CHOIR CAMP at SAINT MARY’S PARISH!!! To follow Summer Intensive Religious Education Sessions These much sought-after choir programs are now at St. Mary’s! In addition to the summer religious education program, music directors Lauren Walters and Andrew Macirowski are offering a 6 session Choir Camp Intensive for all students in the RE Summer Intensive programs. Classes will be offered from 12:30 – 1:30pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Thursdays of each 2 week session. (Session I July 6-17 & Session II August 3- 14) In these 60 minute classes students will learn: • The basics of good vocal techniques – sing anytime, anywhere! • The foundations of solfeggio and sight reading both chant and modern notation • Rhythmic patterning • Musical styling over 8 centuries • Musical settings of the Mass • Common church hymns, songs, psalms & chants • How Catholicism has shaped even the modern music of today • Instrumentation at Mass – organ, piano, bells, etc. – yes, students will have the

opportunity to play each of the instruments! • What is the role of the sung leadership in a Mass: cantor, schola cantorum, choir, etc. Students will be asked to

rehearse music on their own, provided with learning tools, so that they might lead Mass the following Sunday after the Choir Camp that follows each of the Summer Intensive Sessions…plus an exciting opportunity that’s TOP SECRET! Open to all children enrolled in religious education at Saint Mary Parish, Colts Neck.

Questions, please email Lauren Walters at [email protected]

Cost: $30 per child, with a minimum of 20 participants. Sibling discounts: add $15 for each sibling once the minimum is reached. Enrollment deadline: August’s session deadline is July 31st.

Thank you for your patience.

My Dear Parishioners:

Today we celebrate the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. In our own lives and times, we carry much baggage on our journey as disciples of Jesus. We have closets full of clothes, pan-tries and refrigerators full of food: many of us are armed with college degrees. The practical instructions of Jesus to his Twelve would not serve us well today; it would be irresponsible to divest ourselves of all our possessions. At the same time, this gospel does invite us to examine what it is that hinders us from fulfilling the mission on which Jesus sends all of us, beginning with our baptism. Each of us is a disciple who is sent. What distracts us from our mission? For most of us the greatest distractions probably do not come from our possessions but from our interior emotions and attitudes. We don’t like rejection—so it is difficult to preach an unpopular gospel with its demands for righteousness and love. We don’t like the risk of being unsuccessful—so it is easier to live our religion by saying prayers rather than by ceaseless self-giving. We don’t like pushing our own faith to its limits—so it is easier to be more concerned with right doctrine than with right living. In spite of our excuses and human weakness, Jesus is clear: “Go…to my people” (first reading). We must keep moving forward with his mission.

This weekend, we welcome in a special way those families who are participating in our Summer Intensive Religious Education Module I to the 12:00 noon Mass and Orientation Session. This is our second year offering this option to our parishioner families and the enrollment has grown significantly. I am grateful to all those who registered in a timely manner so that we could be well prepared with catechists, materials and space. This option has been well received by many and is complimented throughout the year with many “intergenerational options” for parents and their children. Our Second Summer Session

www.stmaryscoltsneck.org 12 July 2015 Page Six

Module is scheduled for 2 weeks in August. Registration for the Fall “online” and “drop-off” programs has completed its first phase. Late Registration continues through 1 September for any re-registrations. Class lists, materials, catechists, licensing, credential verification needs to be completed so that we can begin on time with all of the details in place. Our parish staff is supported by many, many volunteers. Thank you, one and all for helping us to provide the very best faith formation.

Next weekend, our Pastor Emeritus Father Bausch will preside and preach at the 12:00 noon Mass observing his 60th Anniversary of Ordination to the Priesthood. Come and join with Father Bausch in celebrating this milestone and praying for all priests serving the Church. I hope to provide information in the coming week’s bulletin on how we might assist the family survivors of Tamara Seidle who was recently murdered by her husband. She was the mother of 9 children ages 24-9. Roger Zurro and Deacon Rinaldi have been working on how our assistance might benefit these children. Our parish has already provided emergency assistance at the time of the funeral. Thank you for your prayers and spirit of generosity. We will welcome 8/9 August a representative from the missions to our parish as we participate in the Society for the Propaga-tion of the Faith Mission Cooperative. There will be more information in the coming weeks.

Work continues on our Grotto and Prayer Garden. We hope to announce the date and time for the blessing of this shrine in the coming weeks. We have completed the work on the parking lot and continue progress on providing the handrails for the front entry of our church building. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

The King and I

On September 30, the Martha Mary Guild is going to NYC to see the wonderful new version of a long-time favorite: “The King and I”, which has won 4 Tony Awards –

• Best performance for an actress in a leading role in a musical – Kellie O’Hara

• Best costume design of a musical • Best revival of a musical • Best performance by an actress in a featured role in a

musical – Ruthie Ann Miles

As most people will remember, it is “the story of Anna, a British governess, who tries to help an Eastern king come to terms with the modern world”. The music, dancing, costumes and children are all spectacular. This is a winner, even if one has seen it before! September may seem like a long way off, but the tickets go quickly, so be sure to send in your $152.00 check soon. With the cost of Broadway shows today, this is a deal, for it includes transportation.
