DANA TRENTINI – BIO

Dana Trentini was diagnosed with hypothyroidism one year after the birth

of her first son Benjamin in 2006. Low thyroid symptoms overtook her life.

She was overwhelmed with fatigue. The pregnancy weight was impossible

to lose. Her hair was falling out. The heels of her feet were cracked and her

scalp itched. Her legs were numb to the touch. Unusually heavy menstrual

bleeding, chronic constipation, and recurring urinary tract infections

plagued her. For the first time she had high cholesterol and high blood

sugar. Kidney stones landed her in the emergency room.

She trusted her doctors and followed their thyroid treatment, never

doubting their competence, even when she became pregnant again in late

2008. She assumed that her well-known New York City physicians had all

the answers.

Sadly, her doctors did not know enough about hypothyroidism, especially

the dangers of hypothyroidism in pregnancy. Under their care thyroid levels exceeded the recommended

reference range for pregnancy, endangering the life of her fetus, and she miscarried.

On the day Dana lost her unborn baby so needlessly to hypothyroidism, she vowed to research all she

could about this condition and warn women everywhere. She took her science and research background

and set out on a personal mission to learn all she could about thyroid disease.

After five years of intense research and a quest to find the top thyroid health professionals, Dana is in the

best health of her life. At the age of 40, Dana got pregnant naturally with her second son Hudson born

October 2010.

In tribute to the baby that she lost, to honor her two boys who beat the odds and made it to the world,

and out of frustration over the lack of knowledge about thyroid disease and pregnancy, Dana – who had

never blogged, or used Facebook or Twitter before – launched Hypothyroid Mom on October 1, 2012 to

coincide with National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month in the U.S.

Dana has said: “I failed to be an advocate for my child. I will live with that regret for the rest of my life. I

created Hypothyroid Mom to show my child how sorry I am that I did not take better care of us, by

helping to advocate for babies around the world.

I know my child looks down on me and is proud of me.”

Since its launch, Hypothyroid Mom has taken the thyroid world by storm, and Dana has made strides in

fulfilling her vow.

Dana’s blog Hypothyroid Mom is a blend of personal story and scientific research. Utilizing her

background in both science and communications, she brings the scientific research down to a level that is

accessible to every reader in a way that is passionate and captivating on her blog.

New Book Explores Overlooked Cause of Infertility, Pregnancy,

and Postpartum Challenges At minimum, 27 million -- and as many as 60 million -- Americans have thyroid disease. The majority are women. Despite this, women rarely know that thyroid problems increase their risk of infertility, as well as pregnancy and postpartum complications. The risks? Preeclampsia, miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, low birth weight, postpartum depression, and breastfeeding problems, among others. Untreated thyroid problems in pregnant women also increase the risk of cognitive and other problems, including ADHD and autism, in their children. This awareness gap affects women and doctors, who know little about the ramifications an undiagnosed or undertreated thyroid condition has for a mother and her unborn baby. The new book Your Healthy Pregnancy with Thyroid Disease,

published by DaCapo, is a joint effort by authors Dana Trentini and Mary Shomon, America's top thyroid and hormonal health patient advocates. Your Healthy Pregnancy with Thyroid Disease is a reader-friendly guide that helps two groups of women:

(1) women with undiagnosed thyroid conditions that are causing infertility, recurrent miscarriage, pregnancy complications, or postpartum issues like depression, breastfeeding challenges, or difficulty losing the baby weight.

(2) women with diagnosed thyroid disease whose improper treatment can cause infertility, put their

pregnancy at risk, makes pregnancy and the postpartum period especially difficult and puts the cognitive development and health of their developing babies at risk.

The authors -- both mothers who have also had miscarriages due to thyroid imbalances -- are on a passionate "Mama-Bear" advocacy mission to right the significant wrongs in how the medical system treats prospective and new mothers, pregnant women, and their babies. Specifically, the book exposes, explains and offers patient-, doctor-, and policy-driven solutions to the following problems.

• Thyroid imbalances greatly increase the risk of miscarriage, premature birth, stillbirth, breech birth, and permanent cognitive issues, ADHD, and autism in children. Despite this, the medical establishment continues to fight AGAINST routine or universal thyroid screening as part of women's infertility, pre-conception, early pregnancy, and postpartum workups.

• Too many women are suffering from thyroid-related infertility, which, if undiagnosed and untreated, prevents them from ever becoming mothers. Some of these women even pay tens of thousands of dollars for failed fertility treatments -- never receiving the testing that would find

Page 10: one

treatable thyroid conditions, and potentially restore fertility without costly and invasive assisted reproduction.

• Too many women are experiencing miscarriages, losing desperately-wanted babies due to undiagnosed or improperly treated thyroid problems.

• Too many families are suffering the tragedy of stillbirths, and deaths -- or permanent disabilities -- of severely premature babies, due to undiagnosed or improperly treated thyroid problems.

• Too many babies are being born with cognitive and developmental problems -- including ADHD and autism -- due to improper diagnosis and treatment of their mothers' thyroid conditions during pregnancy.

• Too many women who want to breastfeed their newborns are finding themselves unable to nurse, or provide enough milk, due to improper diagnosis and treatment of their thyroid conditions.

• Too many women are experiencing postpartum depression, fatigue, and a host of physical, mental and emotional symptoms after childbirth, due to undiagnosed or improperly treated thyroid problems.

Your Healthy Pregnancy with Thyroid Disease provides comprehensive and detailed guidelines regarding the signs, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of various thyroid conditions for women who are not yet diagnosed with a thyroid condition. The book also includes detailed plans -- medical, hormonal, nutritional, lifestyle, and more -- for women who have a thyroid condition to help them optimize fertility, have a healthy pregnancy, and manage postpartum health -- all with the goal of delivering a healthy baby. Detailed and easy-to-understand plans and checklists focus on infertility, pre-conception, pregnancy, and postpartum health. The book includes guidance from dozens of the nation's top practitioners, including obstetricians, reproductive endocrinologists, integrative hormone experts, and holistic physicians. Your Healthy Pregnancy with Thyroid Disease is in essence, a What To Expect When You're Expecting (With Thyroid Disease) for the millions of women with undiagnosed and diagnosed thyroid conditions who want to have healthy babies. Dana Trentini is the creator of the popular HypothyroidMom.com blog, and a social media sensation, with more than 900,000 Facebook followers. Shomon is the New York Times bestselling author of 12 health books, including "Thyroid Diet Revolution," and "Living Well With Hypothyroidism." Shomon has been the Thyroid Expert at Verywell/About.com since 1997, blogs for the Huffington Post, serves on the faculty of New York's Open Center, and is the co-star of the popular PBS "Healthy Hormones" television series. Questions and Answers About Your Healthy Pregnancy with

Thyroid Disease How many women have undiagnosed thyroid conditions and may be at risk of infertility, pregnancy complications, or postpartum challenges? At minimum, 27 million -- and as many as 60 million -- Americans have thyroid disease. The vast majority of thyroid sufferers are women. And the majority of people with thyroid disease are currently undiagnosed. This means that millions of American women of childbearing age have thyroid conditions, but don’t yet know. These undiagnosed thyroid problems may be causing infertility, recurrent miscarriage, pregnancy complications, or a long list of postpartum health challenges. Millions more women of childbearing age have diagnosed and treated thyroid conditions, but their treatment may not be

adequate, and can interfere with fertility and a healthy pregnancy. What sorts of issues can undiagnosed, untreated or improperly treated thyroid conditions cause in women? Undiagnosed, untreated or improperly treated thyroid conditions can cause many issues, including:

• Infertility

• Preeclampsia

• Miscarriage

• Stillbirth

• Premature delivery

• Low birth weight

• Postpartum depression

• Breastfeeding problems

• Difficulty losing weight after childbirth

• An increased risk of cognitive problems, ADHD, and autism in the children of untreated mothers.

Who is the audience for Your Healthy Pregnancy with Thyroid Disease? There are two key audiences for the book:

(1) women with undiagnosed thyroid conditions that are causing infertility, recurrent miscarriage, pregnancy complications, or postpartum issues like depression, breastfeeding challenges, or difficulty losing the baby weight.

Page 12: one

(2) women with diagnosed thyroid disease whose improper treatment can cause infertility, put their pregnancy at risk, makes pregnancy and the postpartum period especially difficult and puts the cognitive development and health of their developing babies at risk.

What are the three objectives of Your Healthy Pregnancy with Thyroid Disease?

1. Help women avoid needless heartbreak due to undiagnosed or poorly treated thyroid issues 2. Empower women with the tools and information they need to have a healthy pregnancy and baby 3. Change the system! Despite the serious implications of missing or mistreating thyroid conditions,

pregnant women are not universally screened, leading to miscarriages, or lifelong issues for the child. Fertility experts routinely ignore thyroid testing, while charging thousands of dollars for monthly treatments. And we have epidemics of “unexplained” ADHD and autism — while the demonstrated link between these issues and untreated thyroid problems in mothers are being ignored.

What fundamental problems are addressed in Your Healthy Pregnancy with Thyroid Disease? Too many women are suffering from thyroid-related infertility, which--if undiagnosed, untreated, or improperly treated-- may prevent them from ever becoming mothers. Too many women are paying tens of thousands of dollars for failed fertility treatments and never receive the testing that would find treatable thyroid conditions, and potentially restore fertility without costly and invasive assisted reproduction. Too many women are suffering from miscarriages, losing desperately-wanted babies, due to undiagnosed or improperly treated thyroid problems. Too many families are suffering the tragedy of stillbirths, and the deaths of severely premature babies, due to undiagnosed or improperly treated thyroid problems. Too many babies are being born with cognitive and developmental problems – and children face an increased risk of ADHD and autism -- due to improper diagnosis and treatment of their mothers’ thyroid conditions during pregnancy. Too many women who want to breastfeed their newborns are finding themselves unable to nurse, or provide enough milk, due to improper diagnosis and treatment of their thyroid conditions. Too many women are experiencing fatigue, depression, and a host of physical, mental and emotional symptoms after childbirth, due to undiagnosed or improperly treated thyroid problems. Despite the known connection between thyroid problems and miscarriage/pregnancy complications/risks to children, there is no universal screening for thyroid disease during pregnancy. Millions of women who are pregnant – or hope to be – have thyroid disease that is both undiagnosed and untreated.

Page 13: one

Don't obstetricians and endocrinologists know how to handle thyroid problems during pregnancy? There are specific guidelines for diagnosis, treatment, and management of thyroid conditions during pregnancy. Unfortunately, one study showed that less than 12 percent of obstetricians have actually read them, much less follow them. Endocrinologists are somewhat more informed, but even then, some are unaware of the guidelines, or lax in applying them. The result: there’s an army of uninformed healthcare providers treating women with thyroid disease, and most of these practitioners have little understanding of the complexities or standards of care for pregnant thyroid patients and their babies.

What does Your Healthy Pregnancy with Thyroid Disease include? Your Healthy Pregnancy with Thyroid Disease combines cutting-edge medical advice from leading health practitioners, stories from hundreds of women, and the authors’ own experiences into a reader-friendly guide that helps women: recognize thyroid symptoms; get properly diagnosed/treated; manage thyroid problems during pregnancy, overcome thyroid-related infertility; and deal with postpartum challenges. The book includes step-by-step, easy-to-understand advice, information, and checklists for each stage of motherhood with a thyroid condition, from pre-conception to postpartum. In addition to medical information, the book’s integrative approach includes nutritional, lifestyle, and mind-body approaches that will allow women to live well with a thyroid condition and have a healthy baby. For women who are not yet diagnosed, Your Healthy Pregnancy with Thyroid Disease provides comprehensive and detailed guidelines regarding the signs, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of various thyroid conditions for women who are not yet diagnosed with a thyroid condition. For women who are already diagnosed, the book includes detailed plans to help them optimize fertility, have a healthy pregnancy and baby, and manage postpartum health.
