Why is it called Chianti?

Rummaging among the manypublications, ancient or not, themore plausible etymologyseems that derived from the verbCLANGO (almost a sound of ahunting horn), which defined theancient state of the rural districtcovered with forests, intended tobaronial hunting. From ancient documents it isnoted that the present territorywas a large wooded forest andthe tenth and eleventh centurieswere replaced, little by littlecultivation of olive trees, mulberry trees and "... anexquisite vines that producelow-quality wine." Celebratedby Francesco Redi, doctor andliterary man at the Medici courtin his Bacco in Toscana (1685).There is also a memory of theyear 790, found in the Abbey ofSan Bartolomeo a Ripoli, wherethe Benedictine monks tell of acour t in CLANTI CUMINTEGRO SALINGO and thiscould be another possible originof the name Chianti. The word Chianti appears afterthe middle of the thirteenthcentury, until then the Chiantilands were indicated by thegeneric name of Castiglione, somuch so that the GhibellineEmperor Arrigo IV (1056-1073)and the Guelph Federico IBarbarossa ( 1122-1190) "...confirmed to the counts Guidi,Vicars of the Holy See, thelordship of the territory ofCastiglione ...", a territory thatincluded the present Castellinaand Radda.A certain date is 1384, when itestablished the League ofChianti with the promulgationof its Statute. League, whichprobably already existed fromthe first century, when theRepublic of Florence dividedthe territory into autonomousjurisdictions, calling Leagues. The Florentine Statute of 1415gives us absolute certainty a wayto determine exactly, theboundaries of Chianti of thattime. The League was formed byPlover and those of Chiantiwhere :Panzano, S. MariaNovella, S. Giusto in Salcio, S.Maria a Spaltenna, S. Polo inRosso, S. Marcellino, S. Cristina

In Ligliano, S. Leonino in Conioand S. Agnese. The Plover, places of worship, were formedby the people, the people of theChianti were 69 and for ease ofadministration were divided intothree groups, and so there werethe Terzi or Terzieri, each ofwhich was named from the mostimportant among them: Radda, named capital of the League ofChianti, Castellina and Gaiole.

In 1774, the Grand Duke PietroLeopoldo suppressed theadministrat ions of Terzi ,replacing them with theCommuni ty and leav ingunchanged the same boundaries.Subsequently under the Frenchgovernment were annexed to thedepartment of the Ombrone andto the unification of theKingdom were part of theprovince of Siena, which stillbelong.

Among the arts and craftsselected for Slow MovieContest, there is the

C h i a n t i S c u l p t u r e P a r kPievasciata, in CastelnuovoBerardenga: 7 acres of landwhere the sculptures by artistsfrom around the world blendwith the colors, sounds andnoises of the forest. There are three characteristicsthat define the park, according totheir founders: the integration ofnature and art, the diversity ofcultures, and the vary of usedmaterials, features that, webelieve, make it similar to ourcompetition. We are preparing tomake in the coming monthsSlow Movie Contest become asort of Pievasciata traveling, going to 'animate' from week toweek eight municipalities thatare involved in it.The directors that we haveselected, Italian and foreign, arealready at work, and are doingresearch on the Internet aboutplaces and activities that havebeen proposed. In the late1970s, her parents purchased asmall 180 year-old farmhousein Brockton, Massachusetts. They gradually remodeled thehouse throughout the 1980s,and during this period ofrenovation, mysterious objectshidden in the walls werediscovered: old children’s toys, stacks of pulp magazines fromthe 1870s, corn cob pipes andscraps of clothing. Her motherdutifully saved everything theyfound, arranging them intostrange tableaux on tables in ourliving room. As a little girl,Gina spent hours staring att h e s e o b j e c t s , d r a w i n gassociations between them, constructing narratives aroundthem, engaging in a peculiarkind of suburban archeology.Gina believes that film offersthe ideal showcase for this kindof art: discarded objects can begiven new life through motion,

new identities created with eachre-arrangement and juxtapositionof the images on screen.

This is my first time in Tuscany, and in Italy. I love researching thehistory of specific places, so I'vebeen preparing by doing that, aswell as learning to speak basicItalian. I've been very interestedin using candles and small, focused flashlights as the primarylight sources in my films recently,so I'm hoping that I can apply thistechnique to the area I've beenassigned. My film will likely be acombination of live actionfootage and animated footage.

My professional experienceranges from documentaries (withwhich I began) to TV programsthrough film projects consistmainly of three short films, butbetween all projects, the ones thatgave me the most satisfactionwere those in which in some way,as they say, was history to chooseme. In this case I think Tavarnelle is anew excellent opportunity todedicate myself to Tuscany whichis the part I love most about mycountry!Frequently between a work andanother I voluntarily lost in thearea, but specifically I have neverbeen in Tavarnelle and do notknow anything about his history, now I think I have a good excuseto fill the gap.Among the first work I've donethere are many documentariesdedicated to arts and crafts, but Ihave never had to deal with thep a p e r c r a f t s o r p o t t e r yworkshops, which is why, although I have some ideas, I willnot take decisions until I havedone at least a small survey in thecountry. Now, knowing this project, I amhappy that I could get an idea ofthe local crafts during the days ofthe exhibition “Artigianato ePalazzo' in Florence.

Telling the value of traditionsand grasp the energy that theycontain is one of the mainreasons that lead me to pick upthe camera, so as soon as Ir e p o r t e d t h e c a l l"slowmoviecontest" I could notpull back.I was hoping for this selectionbecause until now I havefocused heavily on those who

are the stories and traditions ofmy country: the Romagna, andthis possibility to climb over theApennines and try to tell the artsand crafts of another region withmy eyes fills me with enthusiasm.

It 's the first time I go toBarberino, and I have thepleasure to find out for thisoccasion, so I can study it andknow it from the start withwatchful eyes to perform thisproject. Now the first thing I will beginstudying the arts and crafts that Ihave been assigned, and thendevelop a narrative that canenclose the all in one short film.

very actual today. I'm trying toknow more about this town, about history of it.I have an idea of what I willshoot in Radda: this will be theshort movie-meditation. I wantto show, that the crafts can relax. When you doing something byyour hands, your mind begin toconcentrated on this the feeling,

sense. This is very important,'cause your thoughts go awayand your head became fresh. After this, you begin tounderstand more things aboutlife, because you have "reload".I had the experience of "reload",when I was with the wild naturefor a long time.

(about Slow MovieContest):She says…

I have not had the opportunity tocome to Tuscany or Greve inChianti, although I know a part ofthis region through film, and thefilms that were shot emblematic, such as "Il paziente inglese", "Ioballo da sola". I find wonderful ...the landscape, the timelesscharacter of the villages, and thequality of life that seems tobreathe in your country : for this Ireally want to know these places.F o r t h i s e x p e r i e n c e I ' mdocumenting, trying to find all the

information at my disposal, inorder to maximize my time andmake a good short. I want to geta complete view of the area andits surroundings: in a nutshell, fully understand the lifestyle ofGreve in Chianti. Internetallows us to access ane n o r m o u s a m o u n t o finformation, not only on atechnical level, but also offeelings: personal experiences, opinions of travelers andimpressions of the people whowent from there or living there. My work will focus in trying toreflect the character of the cityand the influence of the crafts. With my short will film the spiritof the area, that is, the color andthe essence of a city portrayedthrough i t s p ic turesquelandscape. The kind oscillatebetween documentary andfiction story, in search of thetension that allows you to getcloser to the Italian popularc u l t u r e t h r o u g h t h econstruction of a story.I was lucky enough to graduatein art, and for this I came intocontact with many disciplines, such as sculpture or painting. In addition, my family hasalways been very much in touchwith the world of craft, so I amvery sensitive to the method ofwork of a sculptor, for example, that the bottom is not sodifferent from that of afilmmaker.

I intend to speak, for what I can, with the older ofthe place to learn how to havechanged over the years, thetechniques employed inproduction, ensuring thequality of the made in Italy.

Herwork deals with issues such asemigration, human displacementand the passing of time, whichdraw on her own personalexperience. Recent projectsincludes directing her short Film“Soledad”, that was selected atthe Underwire Film FestivalLondon 2012.

She says… (about Slow MovieContest):I have had the pleasure to havevisited Tuscany three times in thepast years but I have never visitedCastelnuovo Berardenga before.I am very excited to get to explorethe area and honored to havebeen chosen to capture the beautyof its people, art and nature. Ialso have a more profoundconnection with Italy as many ofmy ancestors where Italianthemselves. My parents areArgentinian and my greatgrandparents from both familieswhere Italian. Therefore I havebeen brought up with manysimilar traditions and familystories since I was young. I feel avery close relation to Italy and forthis reason when I visit I alwaysfeel at home. For the moment I’mtrying to do as much research as Ican as I think this is the only wayto produce as good piece of work,

however I’m planning to startwriting the script shortly. I amtrying to get inspiration byreading Italian poetry, at themoment I’m reading GiosuèCarducci work. It is still a veryearly stage and I want to allowmyself space for exploration. As I mentioned before feel thatresearch is crucial as I am afirm believer that inspiration isonly able to flourish byexposing yourself to differentcreative and intellectualstimulus. It is only by doing thisthat I find I can crystalize myidea into a final work of art.Filmmaking for me is purespace, waiting to be inhabited.Waiting for me to make it myown. A realty where I can trulyu n d e r s t a n d w h a t i t i simportant to me, a space whereI can reflect. So until a certainextent the images become anextension of myself because Icohabit with them for such along time. For me the mood ofthe film is the most importantaspect, the cinematic spacethat I create becomes theemotion. For this reason I liketo use nature and landscape asif it was a character of its own.I’ll rather leave my audiencewith a simple feeling than witha satisfying story plot. In thisfilm I want to do precisely this, capture the atmosphere of thelandscapes, nature, art andpeople of Chianti. As the finaloutcome I hope that theaudience will be able to relateand feel a part of this cinematicspace that I will be creating.
