    Tour the Grand Collection

Start your tour at Grand Wailea’s fine art gallery, NaPua Gallery located on the fourth floor next to Café Kula. Experience the exciting work of internationally known glass artist Dale Chihuly, on display ev-ery day in the gallery. You will not want to miss the larger than life sculpture, Celebration of Life, a unique bronze by Ken Shutt. The sculpture is located at the top of the stairs just beyond the re-tail shops. (See “K” in Molokini Wing on map.) NaPua Gallery offers smaller size bronzes of Ken Shutt sculpture. Another artist whose art is prominently displayed throughout the grounds of Grand Wailea is one of Hawaii’s living treasures, Satoru Abe. A few of his larger scale works can be viewed on the garden grounds from the walkway in front of NaPua Gallery. Like the works of Ken Shutt, miniature limited edition versions of works by Satoru Abe are represented in the gallery.

Hawaii has honored twelve artists with the distinguished title, Living Treasure of Hawaii. Oahu born artist Satoru Abe is one of three of Hawaii’s “Living Treasures” whose work graces the grounds of Grand Wailea. The two other artists are Herb Kawainui Kane and Maui’s Shige Yamada. Continue your tour of the art located throughout the grounds of Grand Wailea with seventeen bronzes by Fernand Leger lining the breezeway directly in front of the gallery. This is the only complete collection outside of the National Leger Muse-um in Southern France. In the resort’s lobby, see nine bronzes by Fernando Botero, one of today’s most well known contemporary artists.Man with Cane

Satoru Abe in his Honolulu Hawaii studio, 2011

A Satoru Abe (1926 - )Abe is internationally known for his unique abstract natural forms in wood, copper, and bronze - sculptures that engage and harmo-nize with their counterparts in nature. The artist has exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, and Honolulu’s Contemporary Museum. In 1984, he was bestowed the honor of being named a “Living Treasure of Hawai’i”.

B Fernando Botero (1932 - )One of the best contemporary artists in the world today - and perhaps the most popular - Botero has created more than 1,000 paintings, several thousand drawings, and, since the mid-1970s, a distinctive body of sculpture. The nine figures that line the Grand Wailea’s lobby exemplify Botero’s instantly recognizable style.

C Edward Brownlee (1929 - )Brownlee specializes in architectural sculpture. His vision helped create the Art in Public Places program of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts - a program designed to enhance public environments and enrich the public’s awareness of and apprecia-tion for the visual arts.

D Yvonne Cheng (1941 - )A familiar figure in Hawaii’s art world, Cheng grew up in Indone-sia, and draws on the memories of her homeland in her rich use of color dyes and patterns. Her batiks are found in every major public collection in the Islands. Cheng uses the human figure to express her interest in texture and line; her decorative elements combine with this motif to create a fluid visual experience.

E Jan Fisher (1938 - )Fisher studied with Antonio Prieto while obtaining a master of fine arts degree, and as a post-graduate student, worked under acclaimed ceramists Cresent Deru and Herb Sanders. During a three-year stay in Samoa, Fisher fell in love with the people of Polynesia, and much of his recent work reflects that affection.

F Herb Kawainui Kane (1928 - 2011)In 1970, Kane left a successful career as a graphic artist to return to the islands of his birth. The Hawaiian cultural renaissance was just beginning, and Kane’s research on Polynesian canoes led to a series of paintings, then to the design of an actual voyaging canoe. The Hokulea became the first vessel in generations to journey between Hawai’i and Tahiti, navigating only by stars, wind, and ocean currents. In 1987, Kane was named a “Living Treasure of Hawai’i.”

G Fernand Léger (1881 - 1955)One of the founders of 20th-century modernism, Léger worked in many media. Toward the end of his life he became intensely in-terested in bronze for its monochromatic formal qualities. The 17 bronzes at the Grand Wailea were created between 1950 and 1953 and cast posthumously in 1960. They comprise the only complete set outside of the National Léger Museum in Southern France.

H Zhou Ling (1941 - )A leader of the Yunnan School of Chinese painting, Ling creates bold, expressive images of the tribal people and tropical environ-ments of Yunnan Province. Though she suffered both personally and artistically during the Cultural Revolution, Zhou Ling went on to become an art teacher at Beijing’s Central Institute of Nation-alities, and to receive major art commissions.

I Douglas Riesborough (1922 - )Canadian Douglas Riseborough began his career in Los Angeles, painting murals for the UCLA Law Library. Among his commis-sions are murals for the royal family of Saudi Arabia, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hammerstein, and actor Carroll O’Connor.

J Esther Shimazu (1957 - )Shimazu uses vessel making techniques, standard to pottery, to create her whimsical sculptures. The resulting works are hollow, voluminous, and utterly irresistible.

K Ken Shutt (1928 - 2010)A longtime resident of Hawaii prior to his death in 2010, Ken Shutt was a sculptor and painter whose works are known for their open and uplifting nature. He once said, “I want the center of content, the interest areas, to be above eye level and involved as much as possible with surrounding space.”

L Shige Yamada (1933 - )A noted ceramist, painter and sculptor whose career spans more than three decades, Yamada is also the author of a book on the development of ceramics in Hawai’i. His art has been exhibited in the Smithsonian, the Museum of Modern Art/Paris, and the Pal-ace of Fine Arts in Belgium. Yamada has been named a “Living Treasure of Hawai’i.”

Ceramic artist Mark MacKay captures the subtle beauty of Koi swim-ming lazily in a Hawaiian pond. He handcrafts these graceful, ceramic Koi at his Maui studio. Mark conveys the natural balance and serenity of these fish with his use of color and motion. These high-fired ceramic Koi can be placed outdoors in your pond or displayed in the home or office. Like in nature, no two are alike. Each is a masterpiece in itself. Just like

the real thing, these ceramic koi always do better in groups. You are invited to enter the rare and magical world of the art of Michael Parkes. His hand pulled original stone lithographs displayed in NaPua Gallery are some of the last works which are being produced through this dying art form. A dvd of the painstaking process used to create such works is available to be watched at your convenience in NaPua Gallery. The gallery exhibits works by the top artists of Hawaii. Hand carved Hawai-ian hardwood sculpture, bronze and ceramic sculpture, as well as original paintings by the most well known paint-ers of Hawai‘i. Please join us in cel-ebrating Hawaii’s artists.
