ModiNomics that encapsulates Inclusive Economics and Inclusive Governance has returned yet another resounding mandate for Prime Minister Modi. He has managed to understand and deliver to long standing felt-needs like rural roads, toilets, electricity, LPG, bank accounts, housing, small loans and bridging the digital divide, amongst several others. While economists were busy bickering over GDP growth and unemployment data etc. ModiNomics caught them unguarded by bringing in pro-poor governance instead of pro-poverty one. He needs to do a lot more in his second term.
Some key areas of concern for the industry are frequent policy changes and shifting of goal posts across the regulatory spectrum. While KYC remains a major area of bread and butter concern, major shifts have been proposed in Payments (eg: Nilekani Report, P2P Lending, Loan Co-origination, etc). Some of these changes directly impact the business case and affect the technology choices already made. The refrain from the industry is for a stable and equitable policy environment.
This Discussion revolves around what can be done to provide a stable and equitable policy environment that is conducive to financial deepening in India.
Cognitive Technologies and their building blocks will change the business paradigms yet again. There is a massive disruption ahead for all businesses. Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) would become a mainstay for businesses. Quantum Computing will either make even Blockchain vulnerable or potentially offer near foolproof security. 5G will provide the requisite network bandwidth to introduce Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications. Fog Computing will decentralise Artificial Intelligence (AI). Indian legislation and implementation would be compelled to move in this direction. The next set of winners will be decided by our readiness and understanding, and our ability to tame these technological disruptions for business advantage.
This Discussion takes stock of our current knowledge and contributes to a better understanding of technologies of the future.
Digital Payments are becoming ubiquitous. They either underlie or overlap every service transaction that we undertake. While this enhances productivity and convenience, it also creates a large number of security and privacy issues. Recently RBI working papers have referred to Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), while strengthening the system, there are implementation issues such as interoperability and who would be the partners in the trusted ecosystem. Technologies of the future are leading to trade battles with data being the key resource. Such a strategy would also need to take note of quantum computing developments that are around the corner. The India Strategy would need to take stock of global developments across Blockchain, 5G, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Quantum Computing and other technologies. The risk vs. reward of their implementation must be determined.
This Discussion focuses on what could be a relevant and successful strategy for India.

Securing Payments and Financial Systems
