Report of the Superintendent of Schools

To the Superintending School Committee and Citizens of the Town of Bowdoinham.

I herewith present the following report of the schools and school property of the town of Bowdoinham.

VILLAGE SCHOOLS

There were two changes hi teaching positions at the begin­ning of the Fall term. Mrs. Lucy Penley was elected to the Grammar School and Miss Edith Fulton to the Intermediate to. take the places of Miss Mary Hall and Miss Hazel Cornish, who were promoted to the High School. We were able to retain Miss Hattie O. Andros for the First and Second Grades. These teach­ers have all had several years experience, and are well qualified for the positions which they are filling.

RURAL RCHOOLS

There was only one change in the teaching staff before the Fall term, Miss Elizabeth Watson,the teacher of the Ridge school having resigned the first of the Spring, Mrs. M3rra Dunn was se­cured to finish the term. A t the beginning of the Fall term we were able to retain three of the former teachers. Mrs. Myra Dunn was transferred from the Ridge school to the White school, and Miss Louise Jones was appointed'to teach at the Ridge. Miss Cleora Maxwell was secured to teach the Eishop school to suc­ceed Miss Edith Fulton, who was promoted to the grades. A t the close of the Fall term Mrs. Myra Dunn was given leave of absence on account of sickness in the family for the winter term, and Mrs. Lamoreau was secured to fill the position. A ll the rural school teachers have had experience,with one exception,and are showing a great deal of interest in their work.

HIGH SCHOOL

A s Mr. F. W. Bisbee and Miss Genevieve Dunlap resigned

at the close of the Spring term, the High School opened with three new teachers— Mr. F. J. Penley, Principal, Miss Mary Hall, as First Assistant, and Miss Hazel Cornish, as Second Ass­istant. It was necessary to have a Second Assistant because of the addition to the curriculum of the Agricultural Course. The adding of this course seems to have been a wise move on the part of the citizens of the town, as a great many of our students come from the rural section and return to the same after com­pleting their High School work. The course is being made to comply with the State and Federal law which entitles the town to be reimbursed by the State for two thirds of the amount ex­pended for salaries up to five hundred dollars. We also receive, by complying with the requirements of the Smith-Hughes Act, a certain Federal fund for the help of the agricultural courses.

The agricultural subjects are being taught in the High School by Mr. Penley, who is a graduate of the Agricultural Department of the University of Maine, and comes well trained for the position. The registration for this course has teen very large for the first year, and will no doubt continue to be as en­thusiastically received by the students after it is fairly establish­ed. This course does not in any way conflict with the cultural subjects, but gives the student who wishes a chance to learn something of practical value in regard to agriculture, while the student who does not care for this kind of work will be able to pursue the regular college preparatory course.

ATTENDANCE

The attendance has been ver)r much broken up during tlie Fall term on account of Influenza and other sickness. This not only has handicapped the pupil to a certain extent, but i\so makes the work of the teacher more difficult, as there is just so much work to be accomplished, therefore it will be necessary for every pupil to attend school regularly the remainder of the time in order to complete the work. If there is no cause for closing the schools again we shall be able to keep the full number of

weeks before the close of the school year.

‘ MUSIC

One of the needs of our schools at the present time is a course ha Public SchoolM usic. Almost every school throughout the State of the size of Bowdoinham has realized the importance of this subject and is having music taught regularly in the schools. Not having many schools in town it would not be necessary for us to employ a teacher for full time. This could be done at a nominal cost, and it would not be necessary to make any special appropriation as it would be paid from the common school fund.

• TEXTBOOKS AND SUPPLIESMost of the textbooks are in fairly good condition, but it

will be necessary to add some more supplementary readers for the lower grades. Other books will have to be bought to take the place of those which have become worn out. Some of the leading magazines have been subscribed for. A few books have been added to the school library. Each 3 ear twenty-five dollars or more should be used from the. funds in this account to enlarge the library, as in a town where there is no public library it is necessary that the High School should have one of its own. If any one has any good reference books or good literature which he would be willing to donate,they would be very gladly received.

I am giving below a statement of the repairs made 'during the year and the conditions and the needed repairs for the com­ing } ear.

High SchoolNo repairs have been made on this building. It is in a very

good condition, but the ceiling should be murescoed and a few other minor repairs made before another year.

JellersonThis schoolhouse has been shingled and a few repairs made

on the outside. It should be papered and one new inside door be

provided before the Fall term.Bishop

This building will need to have the walls and ceiling mures- coed during the summer.

White -The top of the chimney has been rebuilt, and it will need no

repairs.Ridge

This building needs painting on the inside. It is in a very good condition.

MillayNo repairs were made on this building. This schoolhouse

sits too near the road, therefore it will be necessary to move it back at least one hundred feet, and to purchase a piece of land in order that the lot may be as large as required by the Educa­tional Department. When this building is moved it should be re­built, and to do this satisfactorily it will require at least three hundred dollars. This must be attended to before school opens another year.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Although the increased salaries of teachers and cost of fuel has continued during the past year we have been able to meet all the necessary school expenses without an overdraft in any department. The same amounts for High School and Textbooks with an extra one hundred dollars in the common school fund will be sufficient to provide for the needs of the schools for the ensuing j^ear, with the exception of the repair account, where it will be necessary to make an especial appropriation for the Millay schoolhouse. /

In conclusion I wish to express my appreciation to the Su­perintending School Committee,other town officials,teachers and citizens of the town for the courtesy and help I have received during the past year.
