Saint Anthony of Padua – St. Dominic – Most Precious Blood April 3, 2016 Second Sunday of Easter

Revelation 1:9-11a, 12-13, 17-19 Sunday Vision

Easter puts behind us the hardships of Lent. Many of us accepted those challenges freely—we endured six weeks of penance in a spirit of contrition and with a desire for renewal. But some people do not ask for the difficulties they receive—hardships that are much more than any Lent ever induced.

For example, few people have to endure the kind of persecution that plagued the early church. Throughout the Easter season this year, the church invites us to hear several passages from the Book of Revelation, a book composed during a time of religious persecution. It inspired its readers to keep their faith strong and to press on to a brighter day.

At the beginning of the book, John says he shares the distress his readers endure. He found himself on an island—perhaps in exile—because he “proclaimed God’s word and gave testimony to Jesus.”

His vision took place on the Lord’s day—Sunday. Although he was filled with fear, one “like a son of man” appeared to him and said, “Do not be afraid. I am the first and the last, the one who lives. Once I was dead, but now I am alive forever and ever.”

Whatever the troubles we face, our celebration on the Lord’s day should grant us a vision that we have nothing to fear. The one who died now lives, and he will guide us through the days ahead.

LECTURE: EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON? REALLY? You've heard it, you've been told it, you may have even said it on occasion. "Everything happens for a reason." At first glance, this bit of pop theology may sound like the celebrated Ignatian ideal of "Finding God in all Things." But how similar are these ideas, really? What do they suggest about God, about our relationship with God, and about how we make sense of our own story? St. Ignatius Catholic Community in Baltimore will hold a lecture on these very issues on Monday, April 4 at 7:30 PM with Fr. Timothy O'Brien, S.J. O'Brien is a Jesuit scholastic of the Maryland Province. After completing a master's degree in theology at the University of Chicago Divinity School, he began teaching at Loyola University Maryland in 2014. Tim is a writer and editor at The Jesuit Post. Join us in this season of Easter as we consider the mysteries of suffering and resurrection -- and making meaning of both -- in our own lives. There is no cost for this event. Location: St. Ignatius Catholic Community 740 N. Calvert Street, Baltimore, MD 21202. ST. JOHN, WESTMINSTER, HOSTS NATIONAL SPEAKER, TRENT HORN - St. John Church, Westminster, is hosting two talks by Trent Horn of Catholic Answers Live on April 11 and April 12, 7:30-8:30 p.m. Talks to be given are: “Jesus: Lord or Legend” and “How to Talk about the Tough Moral Issues.” No cost for the talks. Trent is a regular guest on Catholic Answers Live, a lecturer who speaks across the country on issues related to the Catholic faith, and the author of two books. Excerpt from Fr. Joe Breighner’s “More Reflections Along A Country Road”

advice Advice is like a good road map. It can show us the best way to go, but we have to decide to make the trip. And just as no road map can include all the detours and roads under construction, so no advice can substitute for our own judgment and character. On

the road of life we all have to get lost and fi nd our way on our own. We cannot avoid making mistakes. Unfortunately, too many of us fail to learn from our mistakes and that only makes matters worse. As a witty person said, “Experience is what you get when you don’t get what you want.” In other words, when we try and fail, at least we have the experience of what did not go right.

The experience of trying is more important than any failure.Father Joe Breighner
