Everything the Kiowas had came from the buffalo. Their tipis were made of buffalo hides. So were their clothes and moccasins. They ate buffalo meat. Their containers were made of hide, bladders, or stomachs. The buffalo were the life of the Kiowas. Most of all, the buffalo was part of the Kiowa religion. A white buffalo calf had to be sacrificed in the sun dance. The priests used parts of the buffalo to make their prayers when they healed people or when they sang to the powers above ...... Then the white men hired hunters to do nothing but kill the buffalo. Up and down the plains those men ranged, shooting sometimes as many as a hundred buffalo a day. Behind them came the skinners with their wagons. They piled the hides and bones into the wagons until they were full, and then took their loads to the new railroad stations that were being built, to be shipped east to the market. Sometimes there would be a pile of bones as high as a man, stretching a mile along the railroad track. The buffalo saw that their days were over. They could pro-

tect their people no longer. Sadly, the last remnant of the great herd gathered in council, and decided what they would do.The Kiowas were camped on the north side of Mount Scott, those of them who were still free to camp. One young wo-man got up very early in the morning. The dawn mist was still rising from Medicine Creek, and as she looked across the water, peering through the haze, she saw the last buf-falo herd appear like a spirit dream.Straight to Mount Scott the leader of the herd walked. Behind him came the cows and their calves, and the few young males who had survived. As the woman watched, the face of the mountain opened.Inside Mount Scott the world was green and fresh, as it had been when she was a small girl. The rivers ran clear, not red. The wild plains were in blossom, chasing the red buds up the inside slopes.Into this world of beauty the buffalo walked, never to be seen again.

Once Upon A Time In The WestA WOLFGANG DOLAK ARTS PUBLICATION

Wolfgang Dolak was born in Waidhofen,Lower Austria, in 1956, but was raised in the small nearby town of Schrems. He realized his passion for nature, especially birds, in his primary school days and took up photogra-phy with a two-eyed Ikoflex camera of his dad in his early teens with great enthusiam. Wolfgang saved his scanty pocket money and bought some Czech photographers‘ photobooks to study B&W landscape and wildlife photography, but all his photos he got back from the photo shop were disap-

pointing regarding both their print quality and the artistic aspect. Meeting his late paternal friend Lothar Sand-mann, a professional photographer, who was also a well-known mycologist, opened up the doors to the world of macro photography at a professional level. Nikon‘s Nikkormat FT2 together with a MicroNikkor 55mm macro lens were Wolfgang‘s first tools to discover this new world of fungi and mushrooms for himself, with an emphasis on the technical perfect color slide image. During his studies of Biology and English at the teachers trai-ning college, Wolfgang swapped his mecha-nical Nikon for Canon‘s first automatic AE1 with a few prime lenses to take up landscape photography more seriously. A learn-by-do-ing kind of guy, he went through all the ups and downs of trial and error, with — in his case — a rather flat learning curve, only to give up taking photos for roughly two deca-des.The World Wide Web and millions of images to study and learn from were a strong impe-tus for a complete ’relaunch’. Wolfgang went

digital at the very beginning of that era and was fascinated by the fact he was now able to work in the digital darkroom, enhancing his photographs in the best possible way to share both scenes and emotions.Wolfgang has always felt as a part of nature. His love and passion for all our fellow beings have been the guideline for his photography ever since he captured the first black and white photos back in his teens. The gentle and unobtrusive approach towards his sub-jects can be felt in all of his images. Whereas photography was not more than a hobby for him in his earlier years, it has tur-ned into a passion in the last decade. ’Handcrafted’ is the keyword he is focused on in these days: He does not take photos, he makes them. From the capture of an image to the print Wolfgang wants to have full control and relies only on his very personal emotional approach, camera, editing and printing techniques.

’I do not merely depict landscapes and nature — I am a part of them.’
