SEPT-OCT 2019 ON-TRACK Kia Ora! Enjoy our regular business & community newsletter

As we head towards the end of August, I’m

always cheered by the signal of daffodils

giving a nod to the not too distant arrival of

spring. Spring is one of my favourite

seasons, not least because Summer will

soon follow and that means Christmas will be

in the mix!

Before we get to Christmas, the team at FDP

are in full swing as the People’s Choice

Awards evening approaches. The black tie

event is on Saturday 7th September at the

Civic Centre and we are expecting to see an

audience dressed in elegant cocktail dresses

and suits . Be sure to get your tickets to join

the festivities in celebrating fantastic

customer service and friendliness of our

town and District Booking forms are available

online or at the Information Centre. Look out

for photos in the next On-Track.

School Holidays are not too far away; the

Rural Day happening on Friday 11th October

in Manchester Square. This year the theme

CEDA launch Move to Manawatū Initiative

Those of us who live here know how lucky we are to call Manawatū home. CEDA want to showcase this, so more people choose to live and work here.

The region is experiencing levels of growth and investment that have not been seen in almost 30 years and we’re looking to attract and retain more people to live and work in the region, to help maintain and sustain this growth.

That’s why we’ve launched ‘Move to Manawatū’, a marketing initiative designed to raise awareness of the lifestyle and career opportunities in the region, and to support industries and businesses who are trying to attract talent here.

Move to Manawatū tells stories of different families who have moved to the region and what living here means for them.

One of the families featured, is Feilding family the McMenamins.

The McMenamin family of five moved from Wellington to Feilding in January 2017, when Joe’s wife Sarah was offered a position at St John’s Anglican church.

In Wellington, Joe had been a high school teacher for 14 years but their move to Feilding and the more affordable cost of living meant that he was able to pursue his dream of being a full-time artist.

Specialising in painting and print making, he opened his gorgeous art studio in Feilding’s CBD in 2017 and hasn’t looked back. His art extends beyond the four walls of his gallery and his large murals are now prominent features across several buildings in the town.

Our video of Joe’s family and 13 other stories are featured on our website: ManawatuNZ.co.nz/move-to-manawatu

Business & Community Briefs

Steph Strahan – Feilding Farmers’ Market Manager

We are thrilled to welcome Stephanie Strahan as the new Feilding Farmers Market Manager. Steph brings her wealth of promotion and marketing skills together with her local knowledge and can-do attitude to the Markets.

A Feilding local, farmer, passionate foodie and mum to three country kids, Steph has been a loyal market goer over the past 15 years and a strong member of our community. On many occasions, Steph has taken her children to the Farmers Market on a wee “tasting tour” of what was on offer.

Steph and her husband own and run a sheep, beef, and cash cropping farm; they also own and manage a dairy farm. The pair are no stranger to the ‘blood sweat and tears’ that go into producing quality products. Steph holds “great respect for all the growers and producers” and will represent them well in her new role as Market Manager.

Feilding Scooter Competition 2020 – We Need You!

Four students from Feilding High School have taken the initiative to bring young people to Feilding. Inspired by a recent scooter competition, held in Marton, Luke Angus, Adam El-Bayouk, Jayden Bowater and Brooklyn Castell-Spence suggested running a similar competition for locals that will also attract competitors from around New Zealand.

The boys are in the process of designing logos, planning the day, deciding on safety rules and developing their marketing approach, with a tentative date of February 15th 2020 booked for the event. Supported by Feilding Police and Feilding & District Promotion, it is an opportunity for the students to learn how to plan and manage an event and they are looking for more support from our community.

Ways to be involved with this great initiative include volunteering to assist on the day, judging, providing sponsorship, prizes, safety gear, sunblock and competing.

If you are interested in supporting Luke and his team then please contact: Allan Mclean Email: [email protected] Mobile: 0211914617 Yumiko Olliver Email: [email protected] Mobile: 021517991

On 5 August 2019 the Manawatū District Council publicly notified the following draft Bylaws:

• Animal Bylaw 2019

• Cemeteries Bylaw

• Dog Control Bylaw

• Solid Waste Bylaw

• Water Supply Bylaw

The Manawatū District Council also publicly notified the draft Dog Control Policy 2019. The Dog Control Bylaw gives effect to the Dog Control Policy so the two documents must be reviewed together. Once adopted, these documents will replace the current bylaws and dog control policy that are on Council’s website.

The closing date for submissions is 5pm, Thursday 5 September 2019.

Following the close of submissions, a hearing will be held for those that have indicated that they wish to speak to their submission. This is scheduled for the 16th of September 2019. The Hearings Committee will then deliberate on matters raised by submitters on the 27th of September 2019. The final versions of the bylaws and dog control policy are scheduled for adoption by Council on the 10th of October 2019. The remaining bylaws will be consulted on early next year.

Where to find information A Statement of Proposal, copies of the proposed bylaws and policies, submission forms and associated documents are available as follows:

Feilding CACTUS Feilding CACTUS continues its positive impact on 30 high school trainees as they come to the business end of their eight-week programme. With their military conducted training schedule, The RNZAF are getting the students into shape both physically and mentally. The trainees are enjoying the provided breakfasts whilst being inspired by a wide range of fantastic guest speakers we are fortunate enough to have within our community. Development amongst the trainees is strong as they work towards their grilling six hour ‘Longest Day’ session. The session must be completed before the trainees can graduate from the programme and reflects their hard work and commitment to the program. The ‘Longest Day’ will be held on Saturday 21st September throughout our Feilding Community. Follow the ‘Feilding CACTUS’ Facebook page for further updates. The support from the businesses who have backed this program is appreciated. If you’re wondering how your business can in some way support this and future CACTUS programmes, please contact Mayor Helen Worboys- 027 230 6690 or Constable Allan McLean- 021 191 4617. Business & Community Notices

MANFEILD’S big news of the moment is announcement of well-known Manawatu corporate and community identity Kathy Gibson as our new chief executive.

It’s exciting to have such a strong regional champion at the helm. A Rongotea resident and most recently a teacher at Feilding High School, Mrs Gibson has a fantastic venue-related career background in having been chief executive of Special Olympics New Zealand (where she championed Manfeild’s use) and, earlier in her life, of Destination Manawatu. She engaged with Manfeild Park Trust’s formation in 2004 and, for the past nine months, has been on the Manfeild Park Trust board.

And that’s just her Manfeild association … the product of a community-minded family, who had service installed at an early age (her dad, Des Black, was a former mayor of Palmerston North) has also enjoyed experience of a senior position with Marac Corporation and four years in London as New Zealand Trade Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Mrs Gibson’s passion for her home region and Manfeild is evident; she intends to work tirelessly to elevate the facility’s position and promise across the span of existing and potential undertakings it suits so well, with the National Driving Training Centre also being cited as a firm focus.

Manfeild recently-secured Government funding for NDTC – which started with a primary aim to equip school-age drivers with licences before entering the workforce, but now encompasses training to operate trucks and specialist machinery - opens the door to opportunities for the wider region, Gibson says.

“I am also excited to expand the major events we currently hold at Manfeild – particularly in agriculture, equestrian and motorsport.” Kathy has been working outside the region, in the sports and events sector and with central Government for the last 10 years, has had considerable success in securing new funding in her previous roles, and really enjoys the fundraising space. More importantly she has the ability to foster and strengthen key relationships that will certainly help the financial side of Manfeild Park moving forward.

“A great foundation has been established by my predecessors but we must not rest on our laurels. The national events space is very competitive. We need to use our strengths to bring more business into Feilding and the wider Manawatu.”Mrs Gibson replaces another popular local identity, Julie Keane, who departed Manfeild in May after four years as CEO.
