EXTRAORDINARY EDITORIAL: TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL LOCAL COVERAGE

PRESENTER: Michael Brooks, Publisher/Creative Director,South Magazine

DESCRIPTION: Local magazines occupy a unique niche in the media landscape. What makes the good ones stand out is an ability to deliver exclusive content that speaks to local issues in a visually rich format. Learn how to make your publication the go-to resource for your community by crafting a strong editorial package.

BIO: As publisher and creative direc-tor, Brooks is the leader of this band of rebels encamped in South’s headquar-ters. Dumbstruck by the richness and vitality of the culture here, he moved to Savannah in 2005 with a mission: He

would set about creating the ultimate guide to the people, places and happenings that form the unique fabric of modern Southern life.

Today, that idea has come alive through the pages of South. The seeds of the magazine’s success were planted during the 90s, as Brooks followed a determined journey from Ringling School of Art and Design graduate to freelance graphic designer to publisher of the award-winning Albany magazine based in his hometown. Albany’s success brought Brooks recognition, landing him a chair on the board of the Magazine Association of Georgia from 2000-2003 and many professional opportunities. Happily, he and his wife Frankie followed their hearts right to South.

TAKE YOUR MAGAZINE TO THE NEXT LEVEL

PRESENTERS: Lisa Newsom, founding editor-in-chief, and Linda Sherbert, former editor, Veranda

DESCRIPTION: How to expand readership, interest and scope of a magazine.

BIOS: Longtime Atlantan Lisa Newsom’s great contribution to the magazine world is that she showed everybody that there was fine interior design in the South, first with Southern Accents in 1977 and then with her founding

of Veranda in 1987. She enlisted Architectural Digest art director Charles Ross to join her in launching the then-quarterly. The Hearst Corporation purchased Veranda in 2002. Veranda is both a national and international magazine of gracious living. Its circulation has reached about 500,000. In 2010, the main office shifted from Buckhead to Manhattan under a new editor, but Lisa’s vision continues to inspire the magazine’s editorial direction. She is also the author of the new, lavishly illustrated book The Houses of Veranda (May 2012). As the magazine’s original editor-in-chief, Lisa embodies Veranda’s beloved spirit—warm, hospitable, and gracious as well as enduringly stylish.

ENGAGEMENT EMERGENCY

PRESENTER: Debra Bates-Schrott, President, Bates Creative Group

DESCRIPTION: How do you use design and typography to engage your readers? It has never been more important than it is today to deliver content and stories through a solid idea or concept, working on a limited budget. If your audience is not engaged, you are not going to survive. Through case studies, be inspired to think differently about the process and how you design your magazines. No budget? You can deliver the most dynamic design ever!

Using case studies and examples, this session will cover the design process and limited- or no-budget success stories.

BIO: Bates-Schrott is the founder and chief communications strategist of Bates Creative Group. For nearly 20 years, she has led award-winning teams in creative art direction, branding, magazine design and marketing collateral development.

SESSION 4 (3:15 – 4:15 PM)

WHAT AN ART DIRECTOR CAN LEARN FROM THE SIMPLEST BLUES TUNE: HOW GARDEN & GUN FOUND A WAY TO HIT ALL THE RIGHT NOTES.

PRESENTER: Marshall McKinney, Art Director, Garden & Gun

DESCRIPTION: The great jazz composer Charles Mingus once said, “Making the simple complicated is commonplace. Making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that’s creativity.” At Garden & Gun, we work very hard to perfect a pure stripped-down aesthetic tone that harmonizes with the editorial voice of the magazine. The art department takes its queues from the writing. It’s in this way that we aim to hit a few licks well and consistently keep the beat. The intended effect is, hopefully, music to your eyes and ears.

BIO: Marshall McKinney is the art director of Garden & Gun magazine. Since his arrival, the title has twice been nominated for the National Magazine Award for General Excellence, which it took home in 2011. Before coming

to G&G, he launched Outside’s Go, for which he won the Art Director of the Year Award for New Launches from Media Industry Newsletter (MIN). Marshall began his career at Outside magazine in 2001, after receiving his master’s in journalism from the University of Mississippi. He has launched two national magazines and redesigned five more, and he regularly consults and/or works on

print projects large and small. Born in Jackson, Miss., and raised in Memphis, Tenn., Marshall has lived, worked, and played all over the U.S. and now resides in Charleston, S.C., where he can often be spotted surfing small waves on his longboard and recently (finally!) flipped a million on an original 1981 Galaga.

SESSION 1 (8:45 – 9:45 AM)

THE EVOLUTION OF SALES: WHAT YOUR BOSS DOESN’T KNOW

PRESENTER: D’anne Heckert, Advertising Director, The Atlantan

DESCRIPTION: Advice from your superior can be invaluable, but it can also be dated. We all know that the sales process and successful sales tactics are continually evolving, but you may be shocked at the rate of evolution. Once solid sales tips from as recently as the mid-2000s, are simply not effective anymore. We’ll discuss the “art-of-the-sale” in 2012, from cold calling to communication to closing the deal.

BIO: D’anne Cagle-Heckert was born and raised in Atlanta, but followed her high school sweetheart to the University of Alabama, where she double majored in marketing and fashion design. During her last semester, she interned

at JEZEBEL magazine and got a taste of the publishing industry. Upon graduation, Heckert was thrilled to accept an eccount executive position with JEZEBEL, concentrating on outside-the-perimeter accounts–a first for the company. Success followed almost immediately with $600,000 in sales from OTP accounts. Heckert was the youngest AE to be promoted to senior account executive in 2004. She left JEZEBEL to travel the world for a year with her husband before returning to publishing with Points North magazine and finally, finding her home at Modern Luxury. In January 2011, Heckert was promoted to advertising director for The Atlantan with Modern Luxury, and she won the MAGS MAGnolia Award in Sales for the Southeast.

SESSION 2 (10:15 – 11:15 AM)

DESCRIPTION: Let’s be honest, there are many challenges in today’s advertising world for media companies to survive, much less thrive. This interactive presentation will highlight key steps for proven growth, including new print/digital advertising revenue streams, building community websites, leveraging conference opportunities, revamping account rep’s salary/commission structure and more.

BIO: John Krieg is a 15-year media veteran in the healthcare technology sector, specializing in B-to-B print, digital and trade show conferences. His experience has led to start ups for three monthly medical equipment titles, two

annual trade shows and an online medical product-focused social network site, www.medwrench.com.

SELLING SPACE IN A DIGITAL WORLD

PRESENTER: James G. Elliott, President, James G. Elliott Co., Inc.

DESCRIPTION: In 2012 US magazine print revenue is expected to hold its own with .5 percent growth to $15.34 billion. Digital will grow 19.3 percent to $3.3 billion.

It’s a whole new game. Buyers have many more options and far more people calling on them every year. Buyers must execute very fast, and so must sellers. It’s all about transactions now, which requires very different skill sets.

BIO: Jim Elliott has extensive advertising experience, including major agency media management and executive positions at Road & Track and CBS Magazines. The company he founded in 1984 has grown into a national media

sales company with offices in the primary advertising centers.

Elliott’s hands-on work with more than 250 media clients has given him tremendous knowledge about the challenges faced by media owners today. He has developed and executed strategies for clients of all sizes, including b2b and b2c media, Internet and other electronic sales, a large research company, single title publishers, large media conglomerates and associations.

Elliott frequently speaks at industry events and writes for publications such as Folio and Association Media & Publishing. He also serves as charter advisory board member of the Magazine Innovation Center at The University of Mississippi’s Meek School of Journalism and New Media.
