The average fuel efficiency ofnew cars hit an all-time high in

the first half of this year, according tonew research released by a Michiganauto-industry research firm.

The average rate was 23.8 milesper gallon, up 1.1 mpg over the sameperiod in 2011, said Alan Baum, principal of Baum & Associates.

He attributed the improvement tothe increasing number of fuel-effi-cient cars in all segments, consumerpurchase of fuel-efficient largervehicles, and the fact that the current

model year marks the start of theU.S. government requiring automak-ers to increase their label ratings by2016.

Luke Tonachel, vehicles analyst atthe Natural Resources DefenseCouncil, said the fuel-efficiencystandards are “exceeding our expec-tations. These standards are doingexactly what they should.”

Currently, there are 60 nameplateswith high fuel economy in the smalland midsize cars and crossovers seg-ments, as opposed to 28 in 2009,according to Baum.

LOS ANGELES — ToyotaMotor Corp., the biggestmaker of hybrid autos, said its RAV4 EV sport-utility vehicle powered bybatteries and motor fromTesla Motors Inc. will gofarther on a charge thanmajor competitors’ elec-tric models.

The small SUV, arriv-

ing at California dealersin about a month, goes asfar as 113 miles per fullcharge, Toyota said at abriefing last week in New-port Beach, Calif. The$49,800 model is the mar-ket’s only all-electriccrossover and qualifiesfor $10,000 in combinedfederal and state incen-tives, the company said.

“The RAV4 EV’s driv-ing performance, dynam-

ics and cargo capacity areequal to or exceed the gas-powered RAV4 V-6,” saidBill Fay, group vice presi-dent of U.S. Toyota-brandsales. “It’s the most prac-tical, versatile and conve-nient electric vehicle onthe market.”

The battery-poweredSUV joins a growing fieldof rechargeable modelsthat includes Nissan Mo-tor Co.’s Leaf hatchback,

General Motor Co.’s plug-in Volt sedan, Honda Mo-tor Co.’s Fit EV subcom-pact and Ford Motor Co.’sfive-door Focus EV. Auto-makers are adding themto meet demand fromsome buyers for vehiclesthat emit little or no pollu-tion and to comply withCalifornia rules requiringthem from the largestbrands.

Charging modes

The RAV4 EV takesabout six hours to fully re-charge, using a 240-voltoutlet, and has two charg-ing modes for its 41.8-kilo-watt battery. With a “stan-dard” charge, the modelgoes 92 miles; an “extend-ed” charge option is avail-able for longer trips, boosting range to as far as113 miles of real-world

driving, the companysaid.

According to the U.S.Environmental Protec-tion Agency, the Leaf av-erages 73 miles percharge, the Focus EV goesabout 76 miles and the FitEV gets about 82 miles. The Volt averages 38miles on battery powerbefore a gasoline engineengages to propel the car.

The company is pre-dicting lower third-quar-ter profits in North Amer-ica as it incurs manufac-turing and advertisingcosts for new models. Also troubling was GM’smarket share. It fell in allfour of the company’s re-gions, including nearly atwo-point drop in the U.S.to 18.2 percent.

DETROIT — The enginethat powers General Mo-tors is running rough. And if the companydoesn’t tune it up soon,GM’s comeback frombankruptcy is in dangerof stalling.

The Detroit automak-er said Thursday that itssecond-quarter net profitfell 41 percent on a bigloss in Europe. And thereare signs that NorthAmerica, GM’s main in-come source, also is slow-ing.

Profits there have fall-en for two straight quar-ters, the first time that’shappened since the com-pany left bankruptcy in

2009.The results are anoth-

er sign that the U.S. autoindustry, a bright spot inthe economy for twoyears, is heading for a

rough patch.The numbers: GM’s

profit from April throughJune dropped to $1.5 bil-lion, $1 billion less thanthe same quarter a year

formance was worse thanlast year in most keyareas.

“That’s not acceptablewith this leadership team, and we’re going to under-score that fact with ourteams to keep everyoneon point,” he said.

The company’s sharesdropped 52 cents, or 2.6percent, to close at $19.14.

Other automakers:GM isn’t the only auto-maker with Europeantroubles or slowinggrowth in North America.Last week, Ford reportedthat its second-quarternet income fell 57 per-cent, largely because of aloss in Europe. AndChrysler’s U.S. salesgrowth has started wan-ing. Sales were up 13 per-

cent in July over last year, but they grew more than30 percent during thefirst six months.

“North Americangrowth is going to slow abit and will hit the automanufacturers,” said BillSelesky, an auto industryanalyst with Argus Re-search, who predicts a re-bound early next year.

Chief Financial Offi-cer Dan Ammann attrib-uted the second-quarterdrop in North Americanprofits to a $200 millioncut in pension investmentincome.

TOKYO — Toyota raisedits sales target for thisyear to a record 9.76 mil-lion vehicles and reporteda strong recovery in quar-terly profit Friday, under-lining its bounce backfrom a disaster-plagued2011.

Toyota Motor Corp.said April-June profitzoomed to $3.7 billionfrom$14.1milliontheyearbefore.

Its new sales targetwould represent a 23 per-cent increase from the7.95 million vehicles soldin2011,andis180,000vehi-cles more than Toyota’slast forecast in February.

The carmaker’s quar-terly sales soared nearly60 percent to $70.5 billion, rebounding from a salescrash that all Japaneseautomakers suffered af-ter the earthquake andtsunami in northeasternJapan in March last year.

US market sharegrows

Toyota said quarterlyvehicle sales nearly dou-bled from the year beforeto 2.3 million vehicles assales rose in regions in-cluding North America,Europe, Japan and therestofAsia.Theregainingof U.S. market share iscrucial for Toyota as thatis where it makes the bulkof its profits.

Toyota, which makesthe Camry sedan, Lexusluxury model and Priushybrid, has had hardtimes in the past severalyears, including recalls ofmore than 14 million vehi-cles that began threeyears ago and falteringglobal demand from thefinancial crisis.

Sales ambitions

But Toyota has been re-covering.Forthefirsthalfof this year, it regained itsspot as the world’s topautomaker in global vehi-

cle sales, beating U.S. ri-val General Motors Co., aswell as Volkswagen AG ofGermany. Toyota officialshave played down the im-portance of being No. 1.

Before the spate ofquality problems, Toyotamade no secret of ambi-tions to reach global salesof 10 million vehicles.

Toyota’s past sales recordwas achieved in 2007, at9.36 million vehicles.

The currency effect

The company said itcarried out cost cuts total-ing $897 million for thelatest quarter, offsettingthe negative effect of a

strong yen. A strong cur-rency hurts Japanese ex-portersbyerodingtheval-ue of overseas earnings.

Senior Managing Offi-cer Takahiko Ijichi saidthe company left its full-year earnings forecastsunchanged because of theweakening euro and otherrisks.

For the full fiscal yearthrough March 2013, it ex-pects $9.7 billion in profit,up 168 percent from theprevious year, on $282 bil-lion sales, up 18 percent.Adding to its upbeatprospects is Toyota’s pop-ularity in relatively newmarkets such as Indone-sia, India and China.

WASHINGTON — Cleandiesel engines will con-tinue to be the dominantpower source for heavy-duty vehicles in the Unit-ed States for “decades tocome because of theirpower and efficiency,” ac-cording to a newly re-leased study prepared forthe U.S. Department ofEnergy.

The report — “Advanc-ing Technology for Amer-ica’s Transportation Fu-ture” — was authored bythe National PetroleumCouncil at the request ofthe Energy Secretary Ste-phen Chu. The two-yearstudy examines fuels, technologies, industrypractices and govern-ment policies through2030 for auto, truck, air, railandwaterborne trans-port and potential indus-try and government ac-tions that could reduceGreenhouse gas emis-sions from Americantransportation by 50 per-cent by 2050.

“The National Petro-leum Council findingsconfirm what transporta-tion officials and industryleaders have already de-termined — that the con-tinued advancements inclean diesel technologywill continue to make die-sel the dominant powersource for heavy-dutytrucks throughout theUnited States for decadesto come,” said AllenSchaeffer, the ExecutiveDirector of the DieselTechnology Forum.

The NPC report states:“Diesel engines will re-main the powertrain ofchoice for HD vehiclesfor decades to come be-cause of their power andefficiency. There are, however, opportunities toimprove the technology.Significant fuel economyimprovements in dieselpowered trucks are possi-

ble. Indeed, the fuel econ-omy (mpg) for new Class7&8 HD vehicles, whichconsume more than 70percent of the fuel in thetrucking fleet, could bedoubled.”

As The New YorkTimes reported: “(A)t abriefing by the council, one member, William Rei-nert, the national man-ager in charge of the ad-vanced technology groupfor Toyota’s Americansales unit, put it bluntly.‘Internal combustion en-gines are likely to be thedominant propulsion sys-tem for decades to come,’he said.”

Diesel power

“Today, diesel powersmore than 80 percent offreight movement in theU.S. and internationallymore than 90 percent of

global trade is moved bydiesel engines,” Schaeff-er said.

“There is a reason to-day that diesel powers theoverwhelming majorityof the nation’s commer-cial trucking, school andtransit bus fleets,”Schaeffer said.

“Diesel’s unmatchedcombination of availabil-ity, safety, energy-effi-ciency and economicaloperation and perfor-mance has made it thetechnology of choice, butit is also the environmen-tal performance andprospects for even great-er energy efficiency thatmake it the technology ofchoice for the future.

“The advances in die-sel technology have im-proved efficiency and sig-nificantly reduced emis-sion to the point that die-sel engines are now near

zero emissions. The NPCreport also highlights thatdiesel technology willcontinue to advance in thecoming years. These areall reasons why the Na-tional Petroleum Counciland transportation offi-cials’ project diesel willbe the primary power be-hind freight transporta-tion for many decades tocome. Diesel’s role as atechnology to increasing-ly power light-duty vehi-cles in the future was alsorecognized in the report.“

Alternative fuel?

The NPC report exam-ined several alternativefuel sources includingnatural gas, which NPCsaid could make inroadsinto heavy-duty trucking“assuming that the cur-rent price spread be-tween diesel and natural

gas persists over time.”The report also high-

lighted the major infra-structure problems natu-ral gas and other alterna-tive fuel sources face.

“Deployment of a newfuel infrastructure is asignificant hurdle to theadoption of new fuel-vehi-cle systems. It could costtens to hundreds of bil-lions of dollars to providesimilar alternative fuelavailability as the currentgasoline infrastructureand will take decades tofully deploy,” the reportsaid. “Some fuels also re-quire advances in supply-chain infrastructure tech-nology to aid deployment.Specifically, advancedbiofuels must overcometechnology hurdles relat-ed to fuel manufacturing, and hydrogen must over-come technology hurdlesrelated to dispensing in-

frastructure.”The NPC study also co-

incides with a recent sur-vey of industrial freightcarriers which found lessthan 10 percent of seniorexecutives currently “be-lieve LNG will be widelyadopted of over-the-roadtrucking.”

Technology neutral

“The NPC report alsorecommended againsthaving the governmentattempt to pick winnersand loser in transporta-tion,” Schaeffer said.

The report stated:“There is a great deal ofuncertainty regardingwhich individual fuel-ve-hicle systems will over-come technology hurdlesto become economicallyand environmentally at-tractive by 2050.

“Therefore, govern-ment policies should betechnology neutral whilemarket dynamics drivecommercialization.”

Said Schaeffer, “TheNPC recommendationurging technology neu-trality is one the Admini-stration should heed, par-ticularly given past expe-rience favoring certainenergy sources and tech-nologies.”

BASF released its Global Auto-motive Color Trend Report, whichsays consumers want more color ontheir cars, or at least more variationson the tried-and-true silver, whiteand black.

That’s why some car models yousee have three different grays. We’re

I f you think you see the ToyotaPrius everywhere, that’s becauseit is. Sales of Toyota’s most pop-

ular hybrid are continually strong, undoubtedly propelled by the lure ofhigh fuel economy. Toyota has evenexpanded the family withthe Mini-Me Prius c andpuffed-up Prius v.

Is the traditional Priusstill on top? We took it ona road trip, and in terms offuel economy, the answeris a resounding yes.

The 2012 Toyota Priusis EPA-rated at 51/48/50mpg city/highway/combined. TheEPA lists “unofficial mpg estimatesfrom vehicle owners” that are asmidge higher, with an average rat-ing of 51.6 mpg.

How did this overachiever per-form for me? It surpassed all of theabove. During a 324-mile trip, Idrove normally and averaged 53.6

mpg. I spent about 75 percent ofthose miles at highway speeds, andthe air conditioning was on duringthe entire trip. The hatchback wasalso loaded with two adults, onechild and lots of weekend gear.

The Prius features several driver-selectable operating modes, and I

spent most of the time inEco mode, which altersthrottle response and lim-its air-conditioningpower to save energy.

Part of the appeal of thePrius family is choice. The tiny Prius c offersbetter city gas mileage(53/46/50 mpg) in a much

smaller package, and the larger Priusv offers more space without sacrific-ing too many precious mpgs(44/40/42 mpg).

Up next is the Prius Plug-in, whichoffers a promising 95 MPGe (milesper gallon equivalent). But for now,the plain-old Prius is still hard to beatwhen it comes to gas mileage.
