    12 ON THE JOB 2013

on range between $4 to $60 million.Because basements are not subject toproperty tax, affluent homeowners areconstructing elaborate living spacesthat include gyms, media rooms, entertainment areas, and more.

Competitive edgeWith the education he received inScotland and Ireland in surveying, soilanalysis, structural design and projectmanagement, Hynes and his crew arethe perfect fit for the job.

I have a big advantage over mycompetition in that I carry out all of

the excavation, drainage and concretework for all of these houses that Iconstruct, Hynes says. Whereas thegeneral contractor might need two tothree subcontractors, I take care ofeverything. So, theres kind of a synergybuilt in where I can save time, and alsomake sure that there are no parts missing

along the way. It leaves more time for theproject manager to follow up with bidsfor all the other trades; he doesnt need tobe checking every step along the way.

Hynes prefers to stay small, workingtwo or three jobs at a time so that he isable to maintain oversight and qualitycontrol over all aspects of the job. In thebeginning stage of a residential project,he will utilize his Cat 320C L or 318B LHydraulic Excavators to complete themass excavation and backfilling. Onsome of the larger projects, he will useboth and then move those machines tothe next jobsite.

Then he uses his mini excavators tocarry out the drainage work around theperimeter of the foundation and digtrenches for utilities.

Whats nice about having three miniexcavators is that sometimes I will need

to have all three of them working,Hynes says. Sometimes I dont alwaysneed all three, but it costs me moremoney in the long run not to havethe equipment that I need for theproject, instead of having one piece ofequipment, but then holding up myother projects and upsetting my clients.

Hynes says there are many times wherehis 305.5 or 303 mini excavator is toolarge for the work at hand, and the onlymini excavator that can get the job doneis the 302.7D excavator.

Where Hynes adds value to a project is byvirtue of his training and education. Hecan take a set of plans and determine whatwill work best, and what improvements hecan contribute.

At the early stages of a project, thegeneral contractor will come to me andask how can we value-engineer this

project to keep the cost down? Hynessays.

And also how we can move the jobahead in a timely manner? I recommendwhat I think is the best design withthe soil conditions that we face. Theproject manager can then go back to

    WHAT I LIKE ABOUT CATEQUIPMEN

Running both concrete and excavation work and not having a full-time mec

reliability of Cat machines is very important to me, says Alan Hynes, owne

Hynes Construction. And since I bought my first piece of Cat

equipment in 2005, I have had no major issues. Just having

the reliability of not having to worry about breakdowns is very

    important to me.

Hynes also likes the fact that many of his attachments work on

multiple pieces of equipment without any hassle.

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT MY CAT

    DEALER

I dont have a full-time mechanic, so if I have a breakdown on

site and the machine is immobilized, Peterson sends out one of

their service trucks right away, and their techs determine the problem and fi

possible, or bring the machine back to the nearest Peterson facility for repai

He also likes the fact that when he needs another piece of equipment, it i

one of Peterson Cats locations in Santa Rosa or San Leandro. He likes the

buy equipment new or used, and that his sales representative will search

necessary to get him the piece of equipment that he needs.

We have environmental laws that are very stringent in California, and he

I comply with them, and I am not going to have to give up t he piece of eqpurchasing anytime soon because its not in t he correct emissions tier.

Hynes also likes Petersons parts drop locations. Hynes can call Petersons p

late in the afternoon with the parts he needs for his equipment. The parts a

Rafael drop location and he can then pick them up very early the following

house without having to travel all the way to the dealer.

the design team, and they can make theadjustments to the plans if they agreewith my suggestions to implement themin the actual construction phase.

The Peterson CatadvantageHynes started out purchasing a CatHydraulic Excavator, and has continuedto accumulate Cat equipment inexpanding his fleet. A lot of it had todo with the fact that he liked the initial

treatment he received from his salesrepresentative at Peterson Cat, whoadvised him on selecting the right pieceof equipment for the job, minus thesales pressure.

I never felt like he was trying to takeadvantage of me or charge me toomuch, Hynes says.

And, for those times when Hynes hasfinanced an equipment purchase throughCat Financial, the Peterson rep took theburden off him by processing Hynescredit report and having all of thepaperwork ready for him to sign. Hyneswas able to take advantage of zero-percent financing when he purchasedsome of his smaller pieces of equipment.

Its not like I had to go through abunch of applications, Hynes says. Assoon as I was ready to buy the machine,I obtained Cat financing straight away, and at zero-percent financing, or at agood rate.

Hynes is glad he started out with a Catmachine, and sees the reliability anddealer support as integral parts of hissuccess.

If you dont start off with Caterpillarlets say you buy another brandyouhave already made the first fatal

step, he says. I started off with aCat Excavator, and from there I wasable to order more machinery, and itjust streamlined my experience withordering and purchasing parts. Myexperience with Cat equipment andPeterson Cat has helped me get towhere I am today. OTJ

Trench excavations are a common tool used bygeologists when evaluating potential geologichazards, such as landslides or earthquakefaults. Alan Hynes Construction performs trench
