THE PROBLEM IS REAL
“In high-income countries, the risks of childhood obesity are greatest in lower socioeconomic groups. Although
currently the converse is true in most low- and middle income countries, a changing pattern is emerging. As
countries undergo rapid socioeconomic and/or nutrition transitions, they face a double burden in which inadequate
nutrition and excess weight gain co-exist “
ENDING CHILDOOD OBESITY REPORT, WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION , JANUARY 2016
“For the first time in human history, children have a lower life expectancy than their parents. Our objective must be to
resolve this problem within a generation in order to ensure that those children being born today reach adulthood at a
normal weight”
BARACK OBAMA, FORMER US PRESIDENT
“I am not prepared to look back at my time here in this Parliament, doing this job and say to my children's
generation...We knew there was a problem with sugary drinks. We knew it caused disease. But we ducked the
difficult decisions and we did nothing”

GOVERNMENTS CAN PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN FIGHTING OBESITY
• Established in 2015 as an annual campaign
with the goal of stimulating and supporting
practical actions that will help people
achieve and maintain a healthy weight and
reverse the global obesity crisis.
Source: www.obesityday.worldobesity.org
What started as a grass-roots campaign involving a small
group of concerned doctors and patients, quickly turned
into a major event with participants and activities across
many European countries.

HOT DEBATE: WILL A SUGAR TAX ACTUALLY CURB OBESITY?
Symbolic move –
won’t curb by itself
Erratic implementation
• Types of products e.g. CSD not sweets
• Calculations of tax
No guarantee
manufacturers will pass
on tax – revenue raiser
with no consequence
Minimal impact
in markets where
introduced e.g. Mexico
Carbonated
soft drink
consumption
is naturally
falling
Subsidising healthier foods may be a better example
of rewarding healthier choices

SIN TAX.. WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM TOBACCO?
• Launch mid price • Bet on premium users • Work closely with trade outlets • Look after your low cost line • Delay tax implementation
• Most taxed category in the world
• Sees 4% sales drop on average per 10% price increase
• Consumers tend to stock up before taxes kick in
• Smaller packs used to keep old price levels
• Ensure full availability of the more affordable product
• Pack content reduction can be perceived as (indirect ) price increase
WHAT STRATEGIES HAVE TOBACCO COMPANIES USED?

DOES TAX LEGISLATION WORK?
A large numbers of Hungarians have reduced their consumption of those foodstuffs.
For example 30% have reduced their consumption of pre-packaged sweets, 22% of energy drinks
and 19% of sugar-sweetened soft drinks.
“Taxes also help shift social norms. Consider tobacco: Increasing the price of cigarettes through taxation
was one of the biggest contributors to driving down the smoking rates. "Smoking rates didn't drop
immediately, and taxation had a small effect on consumption immediately. But eventually the taxes had an
effect, "and with fewer people smoking ... it becomes less acceptable to smoke, so it was a feedback
loop." The same could happen with soda consumption.” ROLAND STURM

NUTRITIONAL LABELLING HAS COME A LONG WAY Food Information Regulation October 2012
http://www.eufic.org/en/healthy-living/article/nutrition-labelling-becomes-mandatory-in-europe
ALL MEMBER STATES - NUTRITION LABELLING MANDATORY FROM 13 DEC 2016
Food manufacturers to provide information on the energy value and 6 nutrients in order expressed per
100 g or per 100 ml of product :
• fat
• Saturates
• Carbohydrate
• Sugars
• Protein
• salt
Presented in a nutrition table in “field of vision” (most likely to be the back of he pack), and may in addition
be expressed on a per portion basis. Further nutrients (i.e. monounsaturates, polyunsaturates, polyols,
starch, fibre, vitamins and minerals) can be included voluntarily.
It is important to recognise that the regulation only mandates nutrition labelling in the same field of vision,
commonly on the ‘back of pack’; labelling in the principal field of vision (e.g. ‘front-of-pack’) remains
voluntary.

CONSENSUS VS. IMPLEMENTATION
“There is agreement on the need to provide consumers with more consistent,
informative and simpler nutrition information on food labels.”
EUROPEAN FOOD INFORMATION COUNCIL
Which labelling scheme
gives the best
guidance from a
nutritional point of view?
Nutrition labelling policy should take into account
consumer use, interpretation and understanding
of different nutrition labelling schemes, but it is
the impact on purchasing decisions and
overall diets that matters.
How can consumers best be
helped to make good use of
nutrition labels to make better
food choices?
BUT QUESTIONS REMAIN:

NESTLÉ & SAMSUNG COLLABORATION
A smartphone application seems the
likeliest product that the pair would bring to
market, supported by dedicated wearables
and home appliances for consumers
wishing to extend the functions of that app.
With coupons and advertising in the app,
Nestlé is well-positioned to boost its sales,
particularly to health-conscious
consumers that like to spend money on
products that claim to improve their
