2018 SALARY GUIDE

The U.S. unemployment rate, hovering at 4.4% — the lowest in a decade — is expected to drop further to nearly 4% in 2018. As stated by Kiplinger, that could put the clamps on job creation as it becomes harder for employers to find suitable candidates. Nearly full employment translates to good news for job seekers as intensified competition for workers will drive up compensation, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

As the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) points out, during 2016, dozens of states and major metropolitan areas increased minimum wage. Furthermore, as NBC News states, 2016’s average hourly wage growth reached a seven-year high of roughly 3%. Although the growth has been slow, it has become steady — and SHRM expects it to continue.

Climbing compensation doesn’t only apply to hourly workers; it’s also happening for salaried employees. By the end of 2017, SHRM expects companies’ salary budgets to have risen by a moderate 3%. That number would be higher, but company leaders are still slightly cautious because of a recovering economy and an uncertain political environment. However, according to Glassdoor, there are quite a few professional positions that will soon realize greater salary increases between 3-7%. Looking broadly, Harvard Business Review advises that workers who acquire the latest skills — often technology related — will earn the best pay.

Correspondingly, employers who hire the right workers and train them well stand to realize competitive advantages. Businesses that present higher starting salaries have a leg up on their rivals in a tight labor market — and, as ADP Spark mentions, that buys time to develop more sustainable, long-term initiatives such as talent retention and develop- ment, and enhancing organizational perception in the eyes of top-tier talent.

GETTING UP TO SPEEDOne way for companies to position themselves as a “destination” for the most promising candidates in today’s market is to streamline the hiring process.

Ajilon recently conducted a Google Consumer Survey of professionals employed across a variety of industries. Of the 454 survey respondents actively looking for new employment, 90% said the hiring process should take less than four weeks from application to onboarding. Additionally, 54% said it should take two weeks or less.

Those numbers contrast starkly with reality. The average interview process currently takes about 23 days, and the average total hiring cycle spans nearly 43 days. When hiring takes almost two full weeks longer than candidates expect, there’s a huge opportunity for employers to tighten their hiring timeline and start their relationship with new workers on a positive note.

SKEWING YOUNGERAccording to Pew Research, Millennials have become the largest generation in U.S. history and now represent the dominant segment of the U.S. workforce. Concurrently, Baby Boomers are retiring from the labor force in large numbers, further shaping the pool of job candidates with a youthful bias.

How will this generational shift impact employers talent searches? Our Google survey indicates that 31% of employed Millennials are open to new job opportunities. They’re essentially waiting in place until the right career move comes along, which underscores the need for employers to maintain ties with trusted recruiters.

Millennials are also highly influenced by referrals in their job search. Building and sustaining a positive corporate culture will help keep current employees happy and prompt them to share their feelings. This type of word- of-mouth messaging can be a powerful force in attracting talented Millennials.

Across the board, business leaders are looking for employees who are agile, curious and able to collaborate with others to achieve the greatest results, according to a PwC CEO survey. Although those attributes are among the hardest to recruit, companies will find the effort worthwhile as the race for talent intensifies.

Human resources (HR) professionals specialize in recruiting, interviewing and placing workers. They often handle employee relations issues, compensation and benefits, and corporate training. Some specialists travel extensively to meet applicants at job fairs and college campuses. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, median pay for HR specialists in 2016 was $59,180, with 5% job growth expected through 2024.

Further up the organizational chart, HR managers plan, direct and coordinate the administrative functions of a company. They oversee the hiring process, consult with the executive suite on strategic planning and serve as a liaison between management and employees. Median pay for HR

managers in 2016 was $106,910, with a faster-than-average job growth projection of 9% through 2024.

A World Economic Forum report shows that 65% of employers are investing in reskilling current employees. HR professionals will be needed to assist in employee training aimed at development of new skill sets.

Once HR professionals gain employ-ment, they tend to be committed to their positions. A Google Consumer Survey conducted by Ajilon reveals that among 146 HR respondents, only 12% are looking for new work and 16% are open to new opportunities. That makes finding and hiring qualified candidates a substantial challenge.

Working with a staffing agency more than doubles the pool of potential applicants beyond the 12% of profes-sionals who have made the conscious decision to look for a new job.

The research also highlights a gender gap in HR hiring. Of 500 respondents who indicated being part of the hiring process in some capacity, 57% were men. The gender disparity is more pronounced in HR management roles, where only 33% of respondents were women.

Ajilon’s jobs database shows current HR professional opportunities with titles of HR manager, HR generalist, benefits manager and compensation analyst, among others.

As a FierceHealthcare article mentions, the wild card in examining this sector is the possibility of repeal of the Affordable Care Act, which could lead to patients losing insurance coverage and their ability to pay medical bills, while hospitals could face budget and hiring crunches as uncompensated care increases.

If the current system remains largely intact, most healthcare occupations are expected to experience significant growth, as the overall U.S. population ages and stays active longer in life.

Medical records and health informa-tion technicians organize and manage health data and maintain its quality and accuracy. According the Bureau of Labor Statistics, these technicians earned median pay in 2016 of $38,040, and will be in high demand with 15% job growth predicted through 2024.

Medical and health services managers plan, direct and coordinate medical and health services. They may oversee an entire facility, a specific clinical area or department. Median earnings for

this group in 2016 was $96,540, with 17% job growth projected through 2024.

Non-clinical healthcare professionals name salary as their most important job consideration, per an Ajilon Google Consumer Survey. They differ from employees in other industries by prioritizing job flexibility, rather than growth opportunities, as their second most important factor when considering a job offer.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a positive outlook for supply chain management positions. Logisticians, who analyze and coordinate an organization’s supply chain — essential capabilities in a global economy — earned median pay of $74,170 in 2016. Industry experts predict a staggering shortfall of up to two million jobs in supply chain over the next 5-10 years.

It’s important to note, however, the dynamic nature of the job market within the supply chain and logistics (SC&L) field. A March 2017 Ajilon Google Consumer Survey finds 41% of currently employed supply chain professionals are open to new job opportunities. That rate is well above other industries

included in the survey and indicates a strong willingness to take on major career changes. Supply chain respon-dents are also less committed to their jobs at a rate of 59%, compared to professionals in finance (79%), human resources (71%) and administration (70%). As such, employers in this sector must concentrate on retention to keep their best workers satisfied and motivated.

Gender is another significant factor in the supply chain sector. Analysis reveals that in a majority of Fortune 500 companies, fewer than 20% of supply chain supervisors are females. Clearly, businesses need to implement initiatives to promote high-potential women and leverage their collaborative

skills, such as the ability to negotiate and work with multiple stakeholders. Supply chain companies should also examine policies that promote work-life balance, a vital component of female workers’ preferences. Overall, according to the aforementioned Google Consumer Survey, the top considerations for women when accepting a job offer are, in order of importance, salary, flexibility, opportunities for growth, benefits, company culture and location.

Ajilon’s jobs database shows current SC&L opportunities with titles of commodity manager, logistics analyst, director of global logistics and operations manager, among others.
