Worsley Methodist Church on Barton Roadis set to close this autumn. The final serviceto be held will be the Harvest on Sunday,2nd October, 2011.

The church is the oldest Methodist Churchin the area. The Society was formed in 1784with the church being built in 1801.

The decision was taken earlier this year toclose completely after a detailed survey of thebuildings revealed extensive works were required to rectify defects in the church andschool room buildings.

Finances required to carry out the immediateworks and maintain the buildings in the future proved too great. Other factors involved Health and Safety issues, plus thelack of new younger members attending.

The Church cherishes their communitylinks, which are currently thriving. TheMethodist Church runs regular activitiessuch as Tea Dances and Indoor Kurling. These will continue until the closure, aslong as they are supported.

Once again, the Methodist Church will playa major role in the Worsley Festival thisJuly.

Eccles Community Art Gallery- a showcase for local artistsEccles Community Art Gallery is a “not-for-personal-profit” organisation run by volunteers (often the exhibiting artists themselves), which aims to make original artworks accessible to all, in the environment of a shopping centre. It showcases the often exceptional work of local artists in a widevariety of media; watercolours, oils, acryllics, pastels and charcoal.Craft workers also exhibit at the Gallery, with textiles, wood items,hand-crafted candles and cards. There are also photographic exhibitions from time to time.

The idea of the Gallery was conceived by Karen Illingworth, herself a talented artist, and supported by ThreadneedleProperties, owners of the Eccles Shopping Mall.Situated on Boothway, one of the entrances to the pedestrianised Mall and directly opposite Eccles Bus Interchange, the Gallery is well served by car (ample spacein the Mall’s multi-storey car park), bus from Worsley, andtram. Open on Saturdays only, from 10am to 4pm theGallery welcomes all - come and chat to the artists!

With thoughts nowturning to summer holidays, here’s a 4-week plan to feelingenergised and full ofconfidence. Each weekof the plan introduceschanges to both dietand exercise and is

designed to build on the previous week.

WEEK 1Replace any fried foods with grilled, baked orsteamed. Limit chocolate, cakes and biscuitsto 2 small portions a week. Eat 3 meals a dayand don’t skip breakfast. Aim to do 20 minsof cardiovascular exercise (walking, jogging, cycling, swimming) on 3 days at a pace youare comfortable with. Identify ways to incorporate more exercise into your day: take the stairs, get off the bus a stop earlier, walk to the shops, park at the far end of thecar park - then do it every day.

WEEK 2Add 2-3 small healthy snacks a day – a pieceof fruit, a small handful of nuts or a low fatyoghurt. This will help you keep your metabolismfired up and stop you over-eating at mealtimes.Limit alcohol consumption to 1 unit per day.Replace your normal dinner plate with one

no more than 9” diameter and split it ¼ leanprotein (meat, fish, eggs, soya), ¼ starchycarbs (pasta, potato, rice) and ½ vegetables.Repeat the exercise from week 1 but increasethe intensity so that you are breathing moreheavily and sweating. Add 2 sets of 10 resistance exercises using resistance bands, dumbbells or your own bodyweight on 2days, ideally alternating with the cardiovascularwork and including upper and lower body exercises. Increase your cardiovascular sessions to 30 minutes.

WEEK 3Switch to wholemeal bread, pasta and rice.Cut out all cakes, biscuits and chocolate.Add a third set of resistance exercises. Aim towalk/jog/cycle/swim further in each 30minute cardio session.

WEEK 41 week to go! Reduce the amount of starchycarbohydrates to 2 small servings a day (1serving = 1 piece bread, 3 small new potatoes,40g uncooked past/rice). Limit alcohol consumption to just two nights a week. Do 30 mins of cardiovascular exercise on 5 daysand your resistance workouts on 4, but ensure you build in one full day’s rest.

Then pack your swimsuit and sun tan lotionand have a fabulous holiday!

Rumble in the JungleA blessing or a curse? Lucky to have great access tomajor road networks, but living with added noiseand congestion in what should be a quiet, serene village. Whatever your view, here are some facts anda little bit of history on our beloved motorway!

The “Rumble” of course, is the constant background noise of the M60, our local contribution to the national road network. The “Jungle”, the remnants of the once far moreextensive Worsley Woods, through which themotorway smashed on its construction path to Hull, some 40 years ago.

A Motorway with an Identity Problem? So firstly, what do we call this motorway? Some would say the M62 and, for the stretchfrom Junction 13 eastwards through theWoods, they (arguably) would be right. Theywould also be right if they said it was the M60,for the two motorways run in concert for several miles. Turn in the opposite directionand you find a similar situation. Between Junctions 13 and 12 (the M602 junction), itagain is both the M60 and M62, but after thatpoint it is the M60, that was formerly the M62to Sale, but for some years and some existingsigns still attest to this day, it became the M63!

The Motorway Age is Born!Impressed by the autobahns of Germany, in1946 the British Government decreed that weshould have a similar road network. In 1949the Special Roads Bill was passed and so workcould begin.

So which motorway came first? Was it the Preston Bypass or the first stretch of the M1?

Well, the Preston Bypass was the first experimental motorway to open in Dec 1958,as part of the M6. The M1 is the UK’s first fulllength motorway with the first section openingin Nov 1959. However, the first constructionwork on a UK motorway took place here!

The distinguished seven mile stretch of the“Stretford-Eccles ByPass”, designated M62 and

to run between Sale and Worsley Courthouse, was planned as early as 1951.

Work started in 1953, with the construction ofthe ramps that later were to carry the BartonHigh Level Bridge, thus predating all other"first" contenders. However, completion of theMotorway was not until 1960, due to the majorwork involved in construction of the actualBridge.

Another “first” is that the Stretford-Eccles Bypasswas the first stretch of motorway built andmaintained by a local authority, in this caseLancashire County Council.

And what a sensation it was! At the time of itscompletion my boss, in a Manchester advertisingagency, was Jack Rosenthal, who later gainedgreat fame as a playwright. He possessed anelderly Ford Prefect, rusty blue, which henamed “Sinbad”. Living in Flixton himself, heoften gave me a lift home to Winton so that we could enjoy a heady dash along the new motorway - virtually no traffic (people were initially very nervous of such “racetracks”),close to 70 exhilarating mph! Then, with hisfirst fees from writing early episodes of “Coronation Street”, he bought a Wolseleywhich he called “Embryo”, in which we got upto 80mph!

Songs were written aboutthis early incarnation of the M62 - check them out on Google.

The Impact on WorsleyIn the early days, the Bypass brought a widerrange of commuters to the village. New housing was built - from 1965 onwards, housesreplaced the bowling green on Farm Lane.

The greater impact came 10 years after itsopening - extensions from Liverpool andacross to the Pennines and Yorkshire, began to realise the present form of the M62.

In 1971, for Worsley this meant the drivethrough the Woods - a devastating event fornature but of surprisingly low impact for villagelife in Worsley and the surrounding villages. Yes, an appalling mess for quite some time interms of mud, noise and traffic disruption, butvery few buildings were involved in the routeand demolitions were not an issue. The oldroad connections were untouched (althoughimpeded by frantically busy roundabouts) andstill served their purpose. The most fundamentallasting effect was the enormous traffic burdenthat the motorway brought with it (plus theaddition of the M602) both in terms of joining

and leaving the motorway.

Though the Woods were regarded even thenas a beauty spot and were staunchly defendedby local groups, there was nothing like the official appreciation of the environment thatthere is today. The motorway had to be built, this was the best route at the lowest cost, endof discussion, was the attitude.

The bulldozers moved in, the cutting was excavated through the trees. Where once a delightful open field, fringed by rhododendrons, backed on to St Marks Church and greetedthose who climbed the steep stepped pathfrom the Delph, there now exists only scrubbordering the motorway embankment.

Still, deeper in the Wood, there is a windingwalk through ancient oak and beech trees. Itdescends into the valley of Kempnough Brookand formerly led to a small glade where wonderfully fragrant wild garlic and a solitaryred flowering hawthorn grew. Now, sadly goneand in their place, a dank culvert which trembles beneath the weight of the trafficabove, and out of which the Brook issues.

On the far side the original walk still exists toGreenleach Lane but somehow the originalmagic is banished by the motorway interlude.

Thus the quietude of Worsley of 50 years agowas banished forever. Though still praised forits many beautiful byways it has acquired anew but dubious fame - as “Junction 13, one of the Nation’s worst traffic blackspots”.

TODAY’S TOPIC: LOW PAID STAFF FILING REQUIREMENTSQ: I want to take on my first member of staff for 16 hours a week and I’ll pay her the minimumwage for now. What requirements do I have for the collecon of tax and naonal insurance etc,and what do I need to file with HMRC?

A: Unless employees provide you with a P45 from a previous employment, you should alwaysget them to complete HMRC form P46. However, assuming she indicates this is her only jobsince 6 April on the P46 (box A), you needn’t submit this to HMRC because she will be earningbelow the Lower Earnings Level (LEL), which for 2011/12 is £102 per week. You can simply file itaway unl her earnings exceed this level.Again on the assumpon that she cked box A, you will not need to calculate any tax or naonalinsurance because her earnings do not exceed either of the thresholds. So unless her earningsexceed the LEL, you can simply pay her gross pay.You will not need to complete the annual forms P14, P60 or P35 either because her earnings arebelow the LEL. So you have no requirements to file anything with HMRC or provide anything toyour employee. On a praccal note though, if your employee is claiming tax credits she may want you to fill outa P60 for her so that she has evidence of her earnings.
