It’s again been busy in the office. Congratulations to Tammy Shepherd taking on the
TO Event Management. She has already started on operational plans.
I caught up with the Nightcliff Bendigo Bank branch manager and discussed some
promotional events that both organisations can be a part of.
It has been great to catch up with a few volunteers who have come in the Office after
their interviews for PTS. It is great to see you all applying.
Could I please remind everyone to look at your hours on DMS and to make sure you
have been marked present to all meetings. This is very important.
We have our major duties in the DMS so please look and sign up if you would like to
attend.

Congratulations to the 2015 Richard Morris Award recipients http://www.stjohnnt.org.au/about-us/newsroom/24-enewsletters/238-enewsletter-february-2016#richardmorris
This year’s Richard Morris award recipients are Peter
Poole for the Darwin area and Mitchell Childs for the
Regional area. Congratulations to both on a well
deserved award.
Peter Poole commenced with St John in 1979 and is
one of our long term Volunteers. His commitment has
never wavered and he has continued to serve the
community, committing over 400 public event hours in
2015. Peter is a Knight of the Order of St John and loves
doing duties on the weekend. Peter always puts his
hands up to assist and help the community by doing
First Aid at events.
Mitchell Childs from Alice Springs, started as a
volunteer in 2014 and has been an outstanding
member, contributing over 500 public event hours.
Mitchell also helps out by assisting with photography
that we are able to use in our promotions. Mitchell is
always the first one to place his name onto duties and
loves helping out the community on weekends. He is a
passionate volunteer dedicating his time to help the
community
Well done to both members, who will be attending the
St John National Member Convention in South
Australia as part of their award.
Background of the Award
The Richard Morris Award is named in honour of Mr
Richard Morris AM KStJ who was Chairman of the
Board of St John for over a quarter of a century from
1977-2000. Richard made an enormous contribution to
St John and as the first Chairman [after independence
from South Australia], was the driving force behind
numerous successful ventures and ideas including the
establishment of the Ambulance Service.
Following Richard’s passing in 2000, his wife Gael
created an Endowment to St John to reward volunteers
for their tireless work. The Award is given to two
Volunteers, who openly display a great Community
Spirit and have also completed the most number of
public duty hours and fulfilled the selection criteria.
The same members are only eligible once every three
years.
Public Duties - the provision of First Aid at Community
and sporting events, and Volunteer Ambulance Duties.
Due to the high level of commitment of volunteers
across the Territory, there are two annual awards – one
for Greater Darwin, which includes Darwin, Palmerston
& Humpty Doo and one to include all other regions –
Batchelor, Nhulunbuy, Katherine, Tennant Creek and
Alice Springs.
Selection Criteria
Must be a volunteer of St John Ambulance (NT)
Inc.
Be a positive role model for St John in the
community
Must have been an active, efficient member
for at least 12 months
Must be over 18 years of age
Preferably have attended a minimum of 10
duties between January and December
Have completed the most Voluntary Public
Duties hours – according to Quarterly Return
Completion of the required annual skills
training

years
Consideration will be given to members who have
contributed to the community in a variety of ways for
St John, including public duties. The final decision will
be at the Commissioner’s discretion.

Steve and I have settled into our home in the Barossa
Valley and loving it. Life continues to be busy (just not
sure doing what) and it has been great to see so many
family and friends come to visit, including some of our
St John friends. We have a lovely view of the hills and
are amazed how they constantly change colour.
Yesterday I was delighted to be invited to St John
Headquarters in Adelaide to join Noel and Liz Talbot
and other members of St John SA for lunch and a
special presentation. SA Commissioner, Noel Hender
presented Bronze Commendations to both Noel and Liz
for their work both in the Northern Territory, and more
recently, in South Australia. Noel was also presented
with his 4th Service Bar. The SA Commissioner read a
citation about Noel and Liz’s contribution to St John
and also a message from NT Commissioner, Mark
Ferguson.
We do miss our friends and family in the NT but love
catching up with all the news and of course the weekly

Ambulance Service OIC Julie Wickham has set up a
new service; twice a week a paramedic will be taking
a vehicle out to where St Vinnies set up their soup
kitchen to help out. Its aim is to promote positive
community interaction in the hope that it will lead to
less assaults on the Service. She has invited the vollies
to come along and bring out a troopie to join in to
provide the opportunity to promote St. John,
Community Education, recruit new members and
when needed provide first aid. It will be running on a
Tuesday and Friday nights from 4pm- 6pm, starting
this week.

St. John Ambulance Brigade, Ireland - Welfare
Department
After the Easter Rising many people were left
displaced with no home and the struggle for survival
was a challenge that faced so many families.
Dr. Ella Webb was third in command of St. John
Ambulance in 1916, the organisation had almost 3,000
members and was at its peak with so many members
joining during the war years. The priority during the
Rising was to assist all who fell injured and those that
were left homeless were provided with shelter and
food. This was the start a welfare department in the St.
John Ambulance. The work continued for almost 50
years.
The welfare department developed over the
course of 6 years from 1916-1922. In 1923 Dr. Webb
worked alongside Miss Gwendoline Barrington who
was in charge of the welfare department (for women)
in the Jacobs biscuit factory, she was also a qualified
social worker. The demand grew for the dining rooms
with 3 being opened in Dublin. The biggest of these
rooms was at 40 Merrion Square, the St. John
Ambulance headquarters. A welfare committee was
setup and the funding flowed in to help develop this
good cause.
Little is known about this welfare department; for
fifty years it provided food, clothing and care for
pregnant mothers. In the first 10 years of the
department over 247,000 dinners were provided to
pregnant women. A programme was setup for these
women and the nursing sisters/officers of SJA worked
with each woman to ensure they attended; this gave
them every possible chance of a healthy pregnancy.
Milk was also given to the pregnant mothers to bring
home and this quality grade milk was provided by the
Overend family, Dundrum. The sisters in the family
were both members. Those who had children were
given soup to bring home. The support from many
families like the Overends was greatly appreciated.
The comfort and support of the department
continued throughout the year and the members gave
up their time at Christmas to provide food and comfort
for the poor of Dublin.
St. John Ambulance has been on the Island of
Ireland for 135 years. Through several years of research
I have discovered some amazing stories of the women
that passed through the ranks.
Both women no doubt helped save the lives of
many women and unborn children.

The hall was used by St. John Ambulance during the
Easter Rising of 1916, it was converted into a
temporary emergency auxiliary hospital, with an
improvised operating theatre and a team of medical
staff worked for 10 days. This was one of 7 auxiliary
hospitals set up by St. John Ambulance during the
Rising.

Sir John Lumsden KBE, MD - founder of the St. John
Ambulance Brigade in Ireland in 1903
By 1914 St. John Ambulance was well established in
Ireland with up to 3,000 members. The leadership of
Lumsden was closely watched by the headquarters in
London and in 1914 St. John Ambulance was officially
registered as the No. 12 (Irish) District and Lumsden
appointed Deputy Commissioner, the leader in
Ireland.
Just two years later in 1916 Dr. Lumsden led the
organisation during the Easter Rising with over 600
members turning out on the streets. One member
was killed in crossfire and several others were
wounded.
The members not only assisted the wounded from
both sides but also helped to staff the city hospitals
and provide welfare for those displaced by the
rebellion.
The Silver Order of St. John Life Saving Medal with
plain black ribbon was awarded to Sir John Lumsden
and the Bronze to his wife Caroline Frances Lumsden
for selfless acts of bravery, attending to the wounded
under heavy fire, Easter Week, 1916.

This Bronze Order of St. John Life Saving Medal was awarded to Caroline F. Lumsden, wife of Sir
John Lumsden KBE, MD.
The awards were granted by the Order of St. John and presented in the RDS, January 1917.
There were 86 Certificates of Honour, 20 Bronze Life Saving Medals and 4 Silver Life Saving Medals
awarded at this presentation. A substantial amount and a rare event to see so many presented at
the same time - awarded to members (majority) and others who took part recovering the wounded
and carrying out selfless acts to save lives during the Easter Rising.
The members and some of those who gave up their time certainly did so in the cause of humanity.
The last Life Saving Medal awarded in Ireland was in 1946. Pàdraig Allen

TIPS ON TRAINING
Hello Everyone,
A quick word about signing off workbooks. As previously discussed the Cert II (FR) books can only be signed by an approved assessor. As these books are then held by training for their auditing protocols it is very important that we ensure that our workbook is filled in properly.
If the module includes questions and filling out a Patient Care Record, all items must be completed. For example; module 1 includes 2 questions, a demonstration of managing a patient, a Patient Care Record and completion of the Utstein cardiac arrest data form. The date of completion is the date the actual module was completed on, therefore, if the scenarios were done on a particular date, but the questions were not answered until 2 weeks later, that date is the one which is entered against the module sign off.
It is imperative that these assessments are signed at completion, not gathered up and kept till the end of the year where someone sits down and ‘guesses’ a date to enter into them.
At formal audit, it would not be surprising if the auditor requested an attendance register to make sure the owner of the workbook was actually present on the night the assessments were done! In 2015 there were a number of workbooks that had signatures and dates for the entire book, all done on the same date. Please do not let this occur in 2016 or your book will be returned.
Don’t forget, the first workshop will be held at 6pm Thursday March 10th at Casuarina. We will be going over paperwork so I would like to see as many people there as possible. Open to everyone. Please encourage your newer members. I will try to make it a fun night.
I am happy for anyone to request a workshop on any particular topic for the future.
Alice Springs – there will be a Cert III (Advanced Responder) course in March. Very few people have nominated to do this. If unsure if you are eligible to do this, please ask me.

SURGICAL TRAINING FOR THE POLICE.
From "Chambers Journal" we learn that:— “A most
useful and much desiderated branch of police
education has just been introduced into the [London]
Metropolitan force. This consists in giving the police
officers a kind of surgical training sufficient to enable
them to deal readily with many of the ordinary
accidents to which people are liable. The society under
which the training is carried out is called the St John
Ambulance Association. Certificates of efficiency were
a few weeks ago presented to seventy-nine London
policemen; and Dr. Sieveking, Physician Extraordinary
to the Queen, addressing the force on that occasion,
spoke of the sympathy felt by the medical profession
with the objects of the association, and of the special
value to the police of the instruction imparted. He
advised them to keep up their knowledge, and
encouraged them to do so by referring to a case which
had come under his notice, where valuable assistance
was rendered to an injured lady by a policeman.
Colonel Duncan, director of the association, also spoke,
and referring to the case of an officer who was shot in
the femoral artery, and of a man who was that day
reported to have bled to death in consequence of a
wound from a scythe, said that any one of the men who
were receiving certificates that day would probably
have been able to save those lives if he had been near
at the time. The objects of this association seem to us
to recommend themselves very strongly to place
authorities all over the country."
London Police Ambulance, circa 1885
A meeting to form the first St John Ambulance Association centre in Australia was held in Melbourne on 13th June 1883,
very closely followed by a meeting to form another centre in Brighton, a suburb of Melbourne, on the 18th June 1883.
The Argus (Melbourne), Tuesday 5 June 1883
THE ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION.
Circulars have been issued by Dr. Neild and Mr. R.
B. Warren inviting co-operation in the formation in
Melbourne of a branch of the St John Ambulance
Association. This association, it is explained was
established in 1877, by the Duke of Manchester and
the Chapter of the Order of St John of Jerusalem in
England, for the purpose of disseminating general
information as to the preliminary treatment of the sick
and injured among all classes of society so as to lessen
the unnecessary suffering so frequently caused by the
ignorance of those unskilled persons with whom the
patient is first brought in contact. The circular proceeds
— “By rough handling, or by the mere want of the
slightest knowledge of how to lift an injured limb a
simple fracture may he converted into a compound
fracture. The method of arresting bleeding from an
artery is so easy that a child may learn it yet thousands
of lives have been lost, the very life blood ebbing away
in the presence of sorrowing spectators because none
among them had been taught one of the first
rudiments of instruction of an ambulance pupil — the
application of an extemporised tourniquet. Again, how
frequent is the loss of life by drowning, yet how
comparatively few persons understand the way to
treat properly the apparently drowned. It is lamentable
to reflect how many of these lives might have been
saved, how much unnecessary torture might have been
avoided, had those first present on the scene but
known how to take the requisite steps for the
restoration of life or the alleviation of pain.”
The scheme of operations has embraced the
formation of :— (a) Centres in important towns and
districts, with an organisation consisting of a local
committee and staff of officials performing gratuitous
service. (b) Detached classes held in towns or villages
Vollie News Thursday 3rd March 2016

pending opportunity arising for the formation of
regular centres. A very large number of these detached
classes have been held in all parts of the United
Kingdom. The course of instruction, which is limited to
a syllabus drawn up by a medical committee, has
consisted of five lectures (given gratuitously by medical
practitioners), with intervals of a week between each,
followed by an examination. This last is conducted by
one of the examining stuff, all the members of which,
as well as the lecturers must be duly qualified medical
practitioners. Those who pass the examination receive
a certificate of proficiency, and certificated pupils who
have twice undergone re-examination in accordance
with the terms of the resolution of July 25th, 1879, with
an interval of not less than 12 months between each
examination, are exempt from any further
examinations, and allowed to purchase a medallion
(bronze, silver, or gold at the pupil's option) to be
carried in the pocket or worn as a brooch, or on the
watchchain, but never as a decoration and to be used
when necessary as a certificate of competency to
render first aid to the injured. Women who have
passed the first or "preliminary" course are allowed to
attend a "second course," consisting of lectures on
home nursing and hygiene, and if successful in passing
the examination for this course are allowed to count
this as a re-examination if the required interval of 12
months since the previous examination (or re-
examination) has been complied with.
The extent of the work performed by the
association in the United Kingdom may be inferred
from the statement that since its establishment, up to
St. John’s Day (24th June), 1882, over 130 centres have
been formed, and over 40,000 certificates awarded to
persons of both sexes. The steady increase of the work
is shown by the number of persons attending classes
during the year ending on the above date, namely,
10,741.
Among the more notable classes in the public
services have been those for the instruction of the
metropolitan and city police, county constabulary,
London and provincial fire brigades, Royal Naval
Artillery Volunteers, the War-office, Admiralty,
Somerset-house, and other Government departments,
the Custom house, East and West India Docks, Surrey
Commercial Docks, Victoria Docks, and many of the
provincial volunteer corps. It is only necessary to add,
as a further proof of the value of the movement, that
several members of the Royal family hold the offices of
presidents, or patrons, of country centres.
The work of the association has lately been
extended to India and France, and in Russia the
handbook of the association has been translated into
the native language and there, as well as in Germany
and the United States, work on the lines laid down by
the association, has been actively and successfully
commenced. It is hoped therefore, that it will be
warmly supported in Australia where there should be
an exceptionally wide field for its work, on account of
the great distances at which a large proportion of the
population lives from the nearest medical aid. The
association has no connexion with any of the
associations or fraternities now existing for benevolent
purposes, whether similar or not in name, nor is it allied
with any religious denomination, but is thoroughly
universal, embracing among its members’ associates
those who are willing to devote a portion of their time
or their means to the help of the suffering and the sick.
It is proposed to hold a public meeting shortly for
the purpose of forming a Melbourne branch of the
association.

STRANDED ON BEACH FOUR NIGHTS
Rescued Flyer Tells Story
DARWIN, Sunday.— “I feel all right. I'm a little tired,
though — but for goodness' sake give me a cigarette.”
With these words Roy Edwards, 31 year-old
Darwin pilot, who was lost for nearly four days in
inhospitable country, near the east Arnhem Land coast,
stepped from his plane this evening.
Outside the Eastern Hill, Victoria, Fire Station, 1901
Vollie News Thursday 3rd March 2016
Page 13
He had flown the 300 miles from the Millingimbi
Island Methodist Mission with Dr. Clyde Fenton, the
“flying doctor.”
Edwards disappeared on Tuesday evening after
setting out from here that afternoon to bring in from
Yirrkala Methodist Mission, on the east coast of
Arnhem Land, the Rev. W. S. Chaseling, a missionary
reported to be dangerously ill.
Edwards was discovered at noon yesterday by the
West Australian Air ways airliner, Canberra, piloted by
Captain E. D. Anderson.
He was on Howard Island, on a beach about 20
miles west of the south-west corner of Elcho Island.
Edwards spent the four nights on the beach with
natives.
“I never want such an experience again,” he said.
Worried By Mosquitoes
“The mosquitoes bit me nearly to death the first
three nights, and the most welcome things dropped by
the Canberra were a mosquito net and a shirt. My
failure to reach Yirrkala was a bitter disappointment. I
was not worried about myself — the natives took good
care of me.
“My greatest concern was the knowledge that
others were worrying about me, particularly my
mother in Sydney and friends in Darwin.”
Edwards said that he was within 25 miles of
Yirrkala when he encountered a terrific storm, against
which it was impossible to continue. He turned back,
hoping to reach Milingimbi, but after a while saw that
the petrol was getting so low that a forced landing was
possible soon.
On seeing an aboriginal camp on a beach, he
landed beside it.
“They gave me water, for which I was so grateful
that I handed them all the cigarettes I had, except
two,” he said.
Dawn Take-off
After finding Edwards yesterday Captain Anderson
notified Darwin, and the civil aviation officials
wirelessed Milingimbi and the search plane Dunbar
Hooper, in which the chief civil aviation officer of the
Territory, Mr. A. Collins, was searching. Dr. Fenton also
was searching, but as he had no radio he got news of
Edwards' position only when he returned to Milingimbi
last night.
He set out this morning and landed beside
Edwards. Finding him well. Dr. Fenton returned to
Milingimbi and loaded petrol for Edwards' plane and
returned.
